  1. 'Free Jazz' and 'Ascension' are both compositions by Ornette and 'trane respectively. Are you saying no one can ever play these compositions again just because they each fill up an album by themselves? I agree that the marketing on these is ill-advised (recreating an album and such), but if you think if it in terms of playing classic jazz compositions, there is a lot of justification in doing this. A big factor is also the choice of personnel. 'Let's throw in a couple of superstars in there' is stupid, especially if the superstars are really the wrong choice for the music. Also, trying to sound like the record is stupid. Personally, I would like to hear the composition 'Free Jazz' played by Ben Allison and Matt Wilson. Bertrand.
  2. I need to order this. Bertrand.
  3. Do we know if a paperback version is imminent? Otherwise, I will spring for this. I've eagerly awaiting this book for many years, ever since I hung out with Paul to look at Dameron's cpyright deposits at the Library of Congress. Bertrand.
  4. My heart goes out to Jimmy and his family. He is a great guy and this is just heart-wrenching. His courage in the face of this tragedy is an inspiration. Bertrand.
  5. Thanks, everyone. I will listen to the samples. I had heard a track from this and did not care for it that much, so I was thinking of just getting an MP3 of those two tracks. I will sleep on it. Bertrand.
  6. Very simple question. Discographies seemed to indicate that Grant Green plays on two tracks: 'Anima Christi' and 'Praise The Lord'. Is this correct? Does he solo on either? Thanks, Bertrand.
  7. The check is in the mail. Bertrand.
  8. I am thinking of getting Moto Grosso Feio since the US version is not really a Blue Note. Did anyone buy this? Is it a needle drop? Bertrand.
  9. Joyeux Anniversaire! Bertrand.
  10. I corrected the typo almost right away, but you posted in between Bertrand.
  11. Considerations about how record labels have evolved are definitely valid. There is no doubt that Blue Note now looks nothing like the label Alfred Lion conceived. And now with the new Universal purchase, it may become something else again. One could argue that Shorter's recordings Night Dreamer, Etcetera, Super Nova and Moto Grosso Feio are on four different labels. But I put this in the discography thread because I really wanted to consider the topic from a discographical point of view, taking into consideration the record label not as a business entity, but as historical entity within the evolution of recorded sound. So bringing this thread back to my original intent , I came up with some initial results for the Blue Note label. Could Have Been Contenders Gil Melle - 32 years between Patterns In Jazz (1956) and Mindscape (1988-1989) Pete LaRoca Sims - 32 years between Basra (1965) and Swingtime (1997) Could Still Be Contenders Dr. Lonnie Smith (nothing since 1970) Herbie Hancock (nothing since 1969) Ornette Coleman (nothing since 1968) Tyrone Washington (nothing since 1968) Grachan Moncur III (nothing since 1963) Freddie Redd (nothing since 1961) Does anyone know of any other long stretches between dates on other labels (not necessarily jazz)? Bertrand. P.S. Did anyone else other than Andrew Hill come back to Blue Note twice?
  12. Definitely two different tunes. I'm not sure why I thought they were the same (Keepnes notes to the Philly Joe CD?). 'Rio' is the tune Wayne plays (compared it to Tito Puente's). Bertrand.
  13. Wayne's opinion dates back to 1995. Is it possible it may have changed in 17 years? When I did the inventory for his bio in 2006, one of the questions I had passed on to him concerned the compositions on this session. He didn't seem to remember much about this session at all, which surprised me. Bertrand.
  14. So the new Wayne Shorter record is his first for Blue Note in 43 years. The previous ones were from late 1970, and most of this was recorded in the Fall of 2011, so that's 41 years between recordings but almost 43 between release dates. That's a LONG time - Lee Morgan didn't even live that long. So I started wondering: 1) Does any other artist have as long as stretch between two albums as a leader on Blue Note? 2) Does any other artist have as long as stretch between two albums as a leader on any 'national' label? (I guess some local artist could self-produce something on his own label every 43 years). I haven't had too much time to think about it yet, but I'm pretty sure that for #1 at least, Wayne Shorter may forever hold the record I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with. Bertrand. P.S. If Blue Note ever decides to offer Freddie Redd another date, then he will have Wayne easily beat. He's still out there and still playing...
  15. The tracks are: 1. Orbits (4:49) 2. Starry Night (8:48) 3. S. S. Golden Mean (5:17) 4. Plaza Real (6:56) 5. Myrrh (3:03) 6. Pegasus (23:06) 7. Flying Down to Rio (12:44) 8. Zero Gravity (8:13) 9. UFO (4:12) 'Orbits' is probably the new version (from Alegria). Don't think I ever heard the quartet play this without an orchestra. Very psyched that he resurrected 'Plaza Real' - possibly my favorite Shorter piece. 'Flying Down To Rio' is something he started playing last year. It's the same piece as 'The Carioca' (also on Dizzy at Newport and Philly Joe Drums Around The World). 'Starry Night' and 'Myrrh' are titles I have heard mentioned and seen listed in reviews. I probably have heard them but don't know which is which. 'UFO' and 'S.S. Golden mean' are new titles to me - I wonder if the latter is related to 'Adventures Aboard The Golden Mean'. He already had a piece called 'Zero Gravity' (credited to the whole band) - it was a bonus track on the Japanese pressing of Sound Barrier. That version was a variation on 'Prince Of Darkness' - I bet this one is different. The group has been using that title for a while for many of their spontaneous improvisations. 'Pegasus' is fascinating - it starts off as the intro to 'Witch Hunt', then goes elsewhere. I heard it at Carnegie Hall with the Imani Winds in December 2008. My only quibble is this could have been two CDs - one quartet, and one with the Imani Winds. He had great arrangements of 'The Three Marias', 'Prometheus Unbound' and 'Night Dreamer' for this group. We may never get official releases of these arrangements. Also, it seems there is still no official recording of 'Prometheus Unbound'. But some great news indeed! It also poses a discographical question (see discography). One last thought: he's back on Blue Note after 43 years. Now would be the prefect time to issue the 10/13/70 session, which was his previous Blue Note record. I know it's a long shot, but enough time has gone by, and what a marketing opportunity. Bertrand.
  16. What was really daft was to not offer to pay for rehearsal time. Bertrand.
  17. I'm close with Tina Brooks - just missing the tracks with Sonny Thompson. Bertrand.
  18. I am getting mixed information from discographies and Amazon reviews. On the one hand, some say that Booker is on 4 tracks (including the two CD bonus tracks). On the other hand, I thought a friend of mine who bought it years ago said Booker is only on one track. The sound clips only have him on 'Searchlight', but they are only 30-second clips. Can anyone who has this set me straight? Thanks, Bertrand.
  19. Awesome! Bertrand.
  20. Reminder that the concert featuring the music of Dewey Redman is THIS Thursday, 10/18, at 5:00 PM. Bertrand.
  21. Thanks, it's starting to make sense! Was the 'Foggy Day' on the Easy Walker CD ever released otherwise? Bertrand.
  22. Thanks, so with the 2 US CDs I have everything that is on the Japanese Shuffle. In order to piece this all together, does anyone know the track lisitng for the new Japanese pressing of Ain't No Way? Thanks, Bertrand.
  23. But the Dusty Groove listing shows that there are 6 bonus tracks on the CD not on the LP, including 'Bonita', 'Pres Delight', 'Better Luck Next Time' and 'Samba De Aviao'. The first three are on the Prodigal Son CD, the last on Bluish Bag. Whatever the two other tracks are that are on the Japanese CD, I bet they are on one of the two US CDs. If someone can list what's on the two Japanese CDs (Shuffle and Ain't No Way), I will post a summary comparing to the US CDs. In any case, I don't think there is anything new on these CDs. Complicated! Bertrand.
  24. Quick question about the Stanley Turrentines, specifically Ain't No Way and New Time Shuffle. I'll check the discographies later, but this stuff has always been a mess. Is the material in the above CDs all contained in various U.S. Turrentine releases such as Bluish Bag, Easy Walker and Return Of The Prodigal Son, or are there tunes on the two above CDs that have never been on CD in the U.S.? Thanks, Bertrand.
  25. Can one make another pledge, if needed? Bertrand.
