  1. I have the 1956 Red Norvo Vibe-rations LP. The notes on the back of the cover say: "In memoriam- Bill Dillard, one of the great new jazz stars, and guitarist on these sessions, lost his life shortly after these recordings were made. The tragedy thus deprived the jazz world of his genius less that a decade after his idol, Charlie Christian, passed into the great beyond. These sides were Bill's last known recordings." Since Charlie died in 1942 the "less than a decade" is not quite correct but who cares? Does anyone know how Bill Dillard lost his life?
  2. What was the label for the "Nocturne" LP? There is a picture of Bill Dillard on eBay right now. Item number 390484659479.
  3. I collect Transition label jazz sessions LPs and CDs. I think my collection is complete. Anyone out there that also collects Transition label?
  4. When CD players/recorders first came out I was very enthusiastic about the ability to record LPs as well as playing CDs. I was able to record much of my large LP collection onto CDRs. Subsequently I have sold or given away all my LPs. The CDRs I made in the early 1980's still play beautifully.
  5. I now do have "Montage" on CD, complete with all songs.
  6. Try calling them at 562-200-5477.
  7. In the notes for the Prestige label Sonny Rollins "Moving Out" CD the term "Pushoff" is used for the song "Swingin' For Bumsy". "Pushoff" apparently is a short bridge between solos and I have never seen it used before. Are there any other examples of the "Pushoff" bridge being used? Listening to the song the "Pushoff" bridge smoothly allows for the transition between solos and I think it would be used in other sessions. I also wonder if this is rehearsed or not.
  8. I have the Koch Jazz version and it is not a needle-drop. It is listed on Amazon for $6. I don't know about the Collectables version.
  9. Has anyone had any problems playing ink-jet printable CDRs?
  10. Very nice 30-minute interview. Several reminiscences about Tristano and his contemporaries. I recorded it. Thanks for the info about the broadcast.
  11. Suggest you try playing the unplayable CDR on a DVD player. DVD players seem to be less selective about playing CDRs. Good luck.
  12. Many thanx- that clears up the issue for me.
  13. I am looking for an SACD player. Many DVD players say they can play SACDs but I wonder if they mean Hybrid SACDs where they play only the CD layer, not the SACD layer. How can I tell? What I am looking for is a reasonably-priced player that will play true SACD, as well as hybrids.
  14. I use my phonograph with a stereo needle to make CDRs of mono LPs with a Sony CD recorder. I notice that the 2 channel displays on the recorder differ slightly at some times, whereas on a perfect mono recording you would expect the 2 channels to stay exactly the same. The resulting CDRs do play in mono perfectly although I do get some stereo clicks or pops. This does not bother me since I am glad to get the music of these old LPs onto a CDR, even though it may not be a pristine recording. If the clicks or pops are really bad I then use an editing program to eliminate them.
  15. What is the problem with using a stereo needle to play a mono LP?
  16. I would like to buy the Jerry Jerome LP. Dan. (hershia@cfl.rr.com)
  17. Can these BN HD CDs be played on an ordinary CD player?
  18. What is the site where AFRS Broadcasts can be downloaded?
  19. I couldn't agree more with Supa Groover. AMG is now worthless!
  20. The Transition discography that I have shows the recording date for TRLP-8 as 20 April 1955. TRLP-8 was never released but Train's Strain was released on TRLP-30 and the other 2 songs in the Paul Chambers Mosaic set. I do not know if the 2 songs, High Step and Nixon, Dixon and Yates Blues, were part of TRLP-8 but I suspect so. The discograpy shows TRLP-8 as a Pepper Adams session titled "Quintet Introducing Curtis Fuller". I would sure like to know the whole story on TRLP-8 as I am a long-time Transition collector. There is another unissued Transition session- TRLP-18 by Jay Migliori, titled "Jazz Down Beat" recorded 7 Nov 1955. One song (I think) is on TRLP-30- Something's Gotta Give. I would also like to have more info on this session- was it ever issued under Migliori's name or what? Another question- TRLP-12 titled "These Things By Dave Coleman" was supposedly recorded and then erased. One song, Backstreet (under the names of Dick Wetmore and Tommy Ball), in on TRLP-30 and may be from this session. Are any more of the Coleman songs issued somewhere else? Also- who is Dave Coleman? All I know from the TRLP-30 notes is that he is a composer- Google lists many Dave Colemans. TRLP-11, possibly is Charles Mingus at Newport, 17 July 1955- a Voice Of America radio broadcast- never issued. Tapes supposedly are in the Library of Congress. Again- any info on this item? TRLP-30 provides tantalizing clues to the above questions. The ultra-rare Japanese-issued CD of TRLP-30 (TOCJ-5889) includes an-unissued Tiny's Blues from the TRLP-1 LP session, as does the Fresh Sound CD (FSR-CD530) of TRLP-1 Herb Pomeroy and His Stablemates (Jazz In A Stable). Any help from you Transition experts out there will be highly appreciated. Dan.
  21. Amazon lists several brands of CD carousel players.
  22. What has happened to the Jazz Forum blog? I can no longer access it for the last week.
  23. Lately I noticed when listening to my stereo system it seemed left-hand channel dominant. I was afraid I had amp problems or other electronic ones. I then noticed that the head on my turntable looked a little askew. I loosened the screws and repositioned the head on the shaft and it solved my problem!!! I guess over time the slight mis-adjustment gradually occurred and just recently became noticeable.
