How come no mention of 2 significant LT sessions: 1. Lucky Strikes! released on Transition label LP TRLP-21 and later as "Brown Rose" by Xanadu (LP 204) or Prevue on CD PR-10. 2. Lucky Strikes (with no exclamation point) released on Prestige LP PRLP-7365 and on CD OJC-194. The Transition sides were recorded in Paris in 1956 are are particularly rare.

Jack Simpson (Host of the "Jazz On The Beach" program in Orlando) plays one of the Hazen Schumacher 30-minute Jazz Revisited CDs every Saturday afternoon at 12:30PM (ET) on WUCF-FM (89.9). This broadcast is streamed on the internet. The broadcast is well worth listening to if you are interested in jazz history prior to the 1950's.

I recently purchased the "This Is Pat Moran" CD on eBay. I luckily received the Japanese Venus Records version and am I impressed! The sound is bright, clear and each instrument really stands out. The re-mastering job was excellent. I was not aware about the Venus quality until reading this thread and I now realize I inadvertently got a superior CD. The primary reason for obtaining this CD was to get another performance by bassist Scott LaFaro. His work here is outatanding. Most of the pieces are upbeat and you get to hear Scott extensively in solo work as well as accompanying the piano of Pat Moran.

Track 7, "The Way You Look Tonight" is from a live session recorded Jan 19, 1957. It is not part of the session from the preceding 6 tracks. The players are Cannonball Adderley (as), Nat Adderley (tp), Sam Jones (b), Specs Wright (ds) and Sonny Clark on piano. The recording quality is atrocious, to put it mildly. Only a died-in-the-wool Sonny Clark completist would want this track, even though the piano playing is totally over-shadowed by the drums/cymbals. There is an approx 1-minute piano solo that is again overwhelmed by the drums. The first 6 tracks are from a Lighthouse All-Stars (Rumsey, Rosolino, Cooper and Levey) session Sept 3, 1956 and is a very good session, both musically and recording-wise. Dan Stewart.

The Transition LP (TRLP-2) has 7 tracks: 1. Back In Your Own Backyard 2. You Do Something To Me 3. Memphis Blues 4. Strut Miss Lizzie 5. Lover Come Back To Me 6. Georgia On My Mind 7. When You're Smiling The performers are: John Windhurst- Trumpet Jim Andrews- Piano Buell Neidlinger- Bass Walter Gifford- Drums Hamilton Carson- Tenor sax Bud Blacklock- Piano Arnie Ginsburg- Recording Engineer Tom Wilson- Producer & Owner Transition Records Windhurst, Andrews, Neidlinger and Gifford form the John Windhurst Quartet. Carson and Blacklock joined in the final track jam session. Recorded April 22,1956 in Boston, possibly at Storyville. Hopefully, the CD will faithfully re-issue this rare LP.

Add the compilation album 'Jazz in Transition' (TRLP-30) to the list, even if some of the tracks (Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Curtis Fuller-Pepper Adams) showed up on several CDs. "Jazz In Transition" (TRLP-30) has been reissued on CD by the Japanese (TOCJ-5889). I own the CD- It is incredibly well done. The booklet is reproduced exactly in it's entirety. Some of the 7 tracks on TRLP-30 have been issued on other CDs, however 3 are only on this CD (tracks 3,4,and 7): Track number: 1. Swing A Little Taste- issued on TRLP-10 "Jazz By Sun Ra" 2. Crazy Rhythm- issued on TRLP-4 "Byrd's Eye View" 3. Backstreet- planned for TRLP-12 "These Things By David Coleman" but this LP was never released. 4. Tiny's Blues- this is an alternate take that has not been reissued. The original take was issued on TRLP-1 "Jazz In A Stable" 5. Train's Strain- planned for TRLP-8 "Quintet Introducing Curtis Fuller" but this LP was never released. In addition to "Train's Strain", two other tracks from TRLP-8 ("High Step" and "Nixon, Dixon And Yates Blues") were released on Jazz West JWLP-7 "Chamber's Music" and on the Mosaic Select "Paul Chambers". 6. Sweet & Lovely- issued on TRLP-19 "Jazz Advance" by Cecil Taylor. 7. Something's Gotta Give- planned for TRLP-18 "Jazz Down Beat" by Jay Migliori but this LP was never released. Please note that the above information is what I have been able to deduce over a long period of time as a Transition label collector and investigator. Great to see the Transition Windhurst (TRLP-2) reissued on CD. This leaves three Transition LPs that still need to be reissued on CD: 1. TRLP-1 Lovelady by Lovey Powell 2. TRLP-23 Chiefly Jazz by The Dartmouth Indian Chiefs 3. TRLP-27 Piano Reflections by Fran Thorne Hopefully, the reissues will include a copy of the booklet that was contained as part of the original LPs. .

Orlando has a terrific Jazz radio station- WUCF-FM. It is available via the internet. WUCF features straight-ahead jazz with live disc jockeys from 6AM to 6PM. The disc jockeys will answer questions and take requests over the telephone- 407-823-3689. From 6PM to 6AM WUCF plays recorded jazz- mainly Bob Parlocha. For those of you losing your local radio jazz broadcasts give WUCF a try.

Would you use Windows Media Player if you could rip WAV files? My WMP does rip WAV files.

I checked my Windows Media Player- I am ripping to a WAV file. Is there any compression or other losses in a WAV file?

I use Windows Media Player to rip CDs and burn CDRs on my HP Vista PC. Does any compression or other alteration of the music take place during ripping? Do I lose or alter any music as a result when I burn a CDR? If so, is there any way I can avoid this within Media Player? Do I need to use another program? Recommendations please. I also copy CDs using a Sony RCD-W500C CD recorder. The CD recorder copies at 1x or 4x speed. Does any compression/alteration take place? Do I lose/alter any music? Is it prefersble to use the 1x copy speed?

I sold my collection (approx 600 LPs) at several record shows. These shows occur 3 times a year here in Orlando and similar shows are held in many other cities. This was a fairly successful experience- I went to several shows where many of my LPs were sold and eventually sold the total residue at the last show I attended as a seller. The prices I got were about the same as eBay, sometimes higher, without the hassle of mailing, etc. If you decide to sell at a show the key thing is to sort your LPs by artist so that a potential buyer can find what he/she is looking for. I agree with previous comments that the condition of the LP is the major selling factor- if your collection is in individual plastic sleeves it helps. Probably the biggest thing I got out of my attendance at the record shows was to get to talk to fellow jazz enthusiasts and made a few trading connections.

can anybody direct me to some shareware that will allow me to save the program to my harddrive? Total Recorder, available on the internet, is terrific. It can record anything that plays via your sound card.

John Mehegan "The Act Of Jazz" Epic LA-16007 or BA-17007 3. John Mehegan "How I Play Jazz Piano" Savoy MG-12076 If any of the above 3 have been reissued on CD I would like to have the CD in preference to the LP. I am still looking for Bob Brookmeyer Mosaic Select discs 1 and 3- see my previous post.

Marian McPartland did a very good Piano Jazz session with Red Richards. It is available on CD.

For you really old-timers out there- do you remember the 1957 or 58 Dodge automobile that had an option for a turn-table that actually slid out from under the dash? As you can imagine it was not very good except when the car was not moving. It only lasted as an option for a short while but I'll bet one now on a vintage Dodge would really be a terrific collectable.
