  1. I think this thread is a good reminder that no matter how "trusted" your source is, do not start an obituary thread until you can verify with a reliable and identifiable source. And oh yeah, I was right.
  2. I don't mean to disrupt the somber and respectful tone of this discussion, but it's been several hours since the original post and there is still no confirmation from reliable and identifiable sources that Mr. Silver has passed. JC doesn't name its source, and despite the assertion from Jazzwise that "It has been widely reported online and across social media..." I can find no evidence of this chatter.
  3. Since you already have an idea of what you consider "reasonable prices", why not let us know what you're willing to pay?
  4. I don't know if this makes any difference, but it appears that the box set is distributed by a U.S. company (101 Distribution), not an Andorran outfit.
  5. And believe me, when Jim manually validates you, you know it!
  6. Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam. I love it. I'm having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam beaked beans spam spam spam and spam!
  7. :tup for Joe Diorio and Joe Pass. Some other suggestions:
  8. I don't think Amazon deserves to be singled out for the price increase you mention. In order to make a deal with the major labels, iTunes capitulated to their demand to raise the price of popular titles to 1.29. This allowed the labels to raise the price of these titles to other retailers like Amazon and ask them to pass this cost on to the consumer. Amazon is a smart company. I doubt that they relished the idea of increasing prices during a recession.
  9. The policy change went into effect on October 22. Earlier in the year, Amazon had warned that it's shipping costs were going to increase during the holiday season. The previous policy had been in effect for a decade, and the increased minimum puts Amazon in the middle of major competitors like Best Buy ($25), Walmart & Target ($50). The change also is being used to promote Amazon Prime, a yearly $79 membership that offers unlimited free two-day shipping on products, plus streaming of movies and TV shows. Unlike many of you, I don't buy CDs anymore and prefer eBooks when they're available, so trying to meet the minimum isn't a major concern. I buy a lot of different things on Amazon like cases of cat food, electronics, household items, some clothes, etc. So, while I can empathize with those of you who shop Amazon infrequently, I believe the increased minimum is justified given the rise in shipping costs over the past 10 years.
  10. I think the OP needs to re-read the "article" (actually, it's little more than a blurb) before getting too worried. First of all, the increased risk of glaucoma is presumably linked to low estrogen levels, not the pill, per se. The author (a reporter, not a researcher) uses phrases like, "Although there isn’t a firm conclusion, the researchers speculate that..." and "The data confirms only an association — not necessarily a direct cause — between oral contraceptives and glaucoma at this time...". Research studies are an important part of the scientific process, but their purported findings are too often reported by the media in a casual or sensational manner, causing confusion and distress in the general population.
  11. Can anyone out there help me identify the font used on this cover of Poppin'?

  13. Cheadle to play Miles Davis in long planned biopic Wed Nov 13, 2:57 PM UTC NEW YORK (AP) — Don Cheadle will play Miles Davis in a biopic the actor has long planned on the innovative jazz pioneer. BiFrost Pictures told The Associated Press on Wednesday that it will finance and produce "Kill the Trumpet Player," with Cheadle also making his directorial debut. Cheadle has been trying to make the film for years. Production is finally set to begin in June. The production company said the movie will focus on when Davis temporarily retired from making music and then re-emerged in 1979. The script is written by Cheadle and Steven Baigelman. Ewan McGregor will co-star as a Rolling Stone reporter, and Zoe Saldana will play Frances Davis, the trumpet player's former wife. Davis collaborator Herbie Hancock will be involved in the production. link
  14. I stand corrected. I saw nothing when I searched the local news outlets. I agree it's foolish to celebrate success with destruction.
  15. I think your portrayal of the after-game response is misleading. The only "fans" I know of that created disturbances were students at UMass and at a college in New Hampshire. Nothing happened outside of Fenway or in the surrounding areas.
  16. Britney Spears' music used to drive away Somali pirates Ree Hines NBC News She's sold close to 100 million albums worldwide, but it seems Britney Spears can't count Somali pirates among her many fans. In fact, her tunes are being used to turn the tide on high-seas crimes. Merchant naval officer Rachel Owens recently spoke to Metro and revealed that a "blast of Britney" is all it takes to send the pirates packing. "Her songs were chosen by the security team because they thought the pirates would hate them most," Owens said. The "Toxic" singer can take heart though — it's nothing personal. "These guys can't stand western culture or music, making Britney's hits perfect," Owens explained. "It’s so effective the ship’s security rarely needs to resort to firing guns." There you have it: Britney Spears saves lives.
  17. Today, October 29th, is National Cat Day. Here's to our fine, furry, feline friends. A special shout out to my own two "boys", Max (Roach) and Sonny (Rollins).
  18. And let's not forget the fact that other family members were in the home when Jaki was shot once in the head, and they deny hearing anything.
  19. Thanks for "hip tip". I have all of David's previous recordings, and there's something to enjoy in every one of them.
  20. No details, not even a link?
  21. For over 30 years, my local public radio station aired "The Jazz Decades", a weekly program featuring traditional, swing, and big band music hosted by Ray Smith, a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic collector of early jazz. Smith passed away three years ago, but WGBH continues to air archived shows Sunday nights at 7pm, as well as offering online streaming anytime. Check it out: Jazz Decades
  22. 16.99 and free shipping on eBay.
  23. I doubt it's a drive problem, since you say the CD is unplayable in your computer and your CD player. Try copying the disc to your computer hard drive (right click copy/save to a new, empty folder on your desktop), then see if any of the music files appear. Good luck.
