  1. I'm thinking of buying a fall series ticket to Firehouse 12. Any opinions on this venue?
  2. As a recent convert, I'm looking forward to Mary Halvorson's upcoming release: Mary Halvorson Septet - Illusionary Sea (Firehouse 12) Mary Halvorson, guitar; Jonathan Finlayson, trumpet; Jacob Garchik, trombone; Jon Irabagon, alto sax; Ingrid Laubrock, tenor sax; John Hébert, bass; Ches Smith, drums.
  3. I'm really enjoying these two new releases: Mazolewski Gonzalez Quintet - Shaman (ForTune) Dennis Gonzalez - trumpet, cornet, mouth percussion, voices; Wojtek Mazolewski - bass, voices; Marek Pospieszalski - tenor saxophone, alto clarinet; Joanna Duda - piano; Jerzy Rogiewicz - drums, percussion. Samuel Blaser Consort in Motion - A Mirror To Machaut (Songlines) Samuel Blaser - trombone; Joachim Badenhorst - tenor saxophone, Bb & bass clarinet; Russ Lossing - piano, Rhodes, Wurlitzer; Drew Gress - bass; Gerry Hemingway - drums.
  4. What bulllshit. I watched the game, and Dumpster's post-game denial. Joe Girardi was right, he's a f**king coward.
  5. Deeper posts? Aside from the "What are you listening to now?" thread, the other "discussion" that gets the most attention here (with 10,480 replies and 485,129 views) is . . . "sexiest album covers". Sad.
  6. Yes, please. Also, would you include the most recent list of Nessa titles? Thanks.
  7. I don't know who currently owns the masters, but I would like to see reissues of the three Richie Kamuca albums Concord released in the '70s: Richie, Drop Me Off In Harlem & Charlie.
  8. Also, I think the inordinate number of threads on this board about album covers and about "hey, here's some pointless article I found on the Internet. I think I'll start a thread!" diminish the quality of real discussion about music, making this a less interesting and rewarding place to be.
  9. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and personal preferences, of course, but I feel statements like this reflect an ignorance and intolerance that is antithetical to appreciating creative improvised music.
  10. IDK, every video I've pulled up of him he plays pretty inside within the mainstream tradition. If you can suggest something more outside, that'd be wonderful. He's a strong player from the vids I watched. Check out Corey with Roscoe Mitchell. He's also played with the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
  11. Sure. An economy can thrive on selling (yet more) mugs with the (soon to be outdated) picture of an infant ... Don't underestimate the royal tyke's earning power, or that of his family. According to the Telegraph: The British tourism agency has reported that the royal family generates close to 500 million pounds, or about $767 million, every year in tourism revenue, drawing visitors to historic royal sites like the Tower of London, Windsor Castle, and Buckingham Palace. The country's tourism agency says that of the 30 million foreign visitors who came to Britain in 2010, 5.8 million visited a castle. Tourism is the third-biggest industry in the U.K., the tourism board claims, and supports about 2.6 million jobs -- or about one in 12.
  12. According to Reuters, analysts say the hype around the birth of the future monarch could jumpstart the British economy by 240 million pounds, or up to $400 million.
  13. I have enjoyed the music from these two dates for many years, but I was unaware of the substitution and the change in the track order. Got to go back and hear what it sounds like in its original form.
  14. I am so close to issuing a jazz fatwa on your arse.
  15. Excellent. Someone else who has attained enlightenment. I don't think I've attained enlightenment; I like piano trios though, and 3 Sounds is a good one. But so are those of Wynton Kelly Red Garland Junior Mance Phineas Newborn McCoy Tyner Ray Bryant Les McCann Sonny Clark Ahmad Jamal King Fleming Ramsey Lewis Horace Parlan John Wright Bobby Timmons Norman Simmons Hampton Hawes And they ain't AT ALL the same old thing; not a one of them. MG How could you forget to mention Bill Evans?
  16. Since it's only two weeks away and there's been no discussion of the Newport Jazz Festival, I assume this year's artists hold little interest for people around here. Still, there will be an installment of the Wayne Shorter 80th birthday tour featuring Herbie Hancock, along with perennial (superficial) favorites like Chick Corea, Hiromi, and Marcus Miller. Anyway, here's the two-day lineup at Newport's Fort Adams State Park: Saturday, August 3, 2013

  17. Enthusiastic, enthralled, enchanted, excited, exuberant, or maybe even elated, but enlightened?
  18. No Mercury. This 4CD compilation includes Introducing The Three Sounds, Introducing The Three Sounds Volume 2, Bottoms Up, Moods, Hey There, Here We Come, Branching Out and Blue Hour.
  19. Blue Note reissued plenty of recordings by The Three Sounds. They're enjoyable enough, but after purchasing two or three titles, I never felt the need to collect more. I suspect that most jazz listeners share the same opinion.
  20. Although still recovering in the hospital, Mandela turns 95 today. Happy birthday, sir.
  21. Stop taking pictures of me!!! Don't you know how special I am?
  22. Welcome to the board, nobastaunavida. A friendly suggestion: when you're starting a thread, look over the brief description of each forum and decide which best suits your topic of discussion. Posting in the right forum will get your topic more attention and better responses. One more thing: the board frowns upon creating multiple threads on the same subject posted in different forums.
  23. Transition also issued a live date by Boston hero Herb Pomeroy entitled Jazz In A Stable.
