  1. Cheadle to play Miles Davis in long planned biopic Wed Nov 13, 2:57 PM UTC NEW YORK (AP) — Don Cheadle will play Miles Davis in a biopic the actor has long planned on the innovative jazz pioneer. BiFrost Pictures told The Associated Press on Wednesday that it will finance and produce "Kill the Trumpet Player," with Cheadle also making his directorial debut. Cheadle has been trying to make the film for years. Production is finally set to begin in June. The production company said the movie will focus on when Davis temporarily retired from making music and then re-emerged in 1979. The script is written by Cheadle and Steven Baigelman. Ewan McGregor will co-star as a Rolling Stone reporter, and Zoe Saldana will play Frances Davis, the trumpet player's former wife. Davis collaborator Herbie Hancock will be involved in the production. link
  2. I stand corrected. I saw nothing when I searched the local news outlets. I agree it's foolish to celebrate success with destruction.
  3. I think your portrayal of the after-game response is misleading. The only "fans" I know of that created disturbances were students at UMass and at a college in New Hampshire. Nothing happened outside of Fenway or in the surrounding areas.
  4. Britney Spears' music used to drive away Somali pirates Ree Hines NBC News She's sold close to 100 million albums worldwide, but it seems Britney Spears can't count Somali pirates among her many fans. In fact, her tunes are being used to turn the tide on high-seas crimes. Merchant naval officer Rachel Owens recently spoke to Metro and revealed that a "blast of Britney" is all it takes to send the pirates packing. "Her songs were chosen by the security team because they thought the pirates would hate them most," Owens said. The "Toxic" singer can take heart though — it's nothing personal. "These guys can't stand western culture or music, making Britney's hits perfect," Owens explained. "It’s so effective the ship’s security rarely needs to resort to firing guns." There you have it: Britney Spears saves lives.
  5. Today, October 29th, is National Cat Day. Here's to our fine, furry, feline friends. A special shout out to my own two "boys", Max (Roach) and Sonny (Rollins).
  6. And let's not forget the fact that other family members were in the home when Jaki was shot once in the head, and they deny hearing anything.
  7. No details, not even a link?
  8. For over 30 years, my local public radio station aired "The Jazz Decades", a weekly program featuring traditional, swing, and big band music hosted by Ray Smith, a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic collector of early jazz. Smith passed away three years ago, but WGBH continues to air archived shows Sunday nights at 7pm, as well as offering online streaming anytime. Check it out: Jazz Decades
  9. 16.99 and free shipping on eBay.
  10. I doubt it's a drive problem, since you say the CD is unplayable in your computer and your CD player. Try copying the disc to your computer hard drive (right click copy/save to a new, empty folder on your desktop), then see if any of the music files appear. Good luck.
  11. Please don't put me in this never say never category that BBS has instigated. I applaud honest people who take the time, effort and money to find original sources and, if needed, create a newly remastered version of a classic title. What I personally choose not to buy are reissues that are nothing more than a copy of what is already available, especially "newly remastered" titles that were remastered by someone else, then merely copied for this latest release. The reissue scene for digital downloads is much worse though, with so many "companies" releasing PD material with confusing titles, no discographies, and questionable sources. Others have the right to spend their money the way they see fit. I'm just thankful that my music library already contains most of the classic titles I need. I wouldn't want to be a newbie at this stage in the game.
  12. Here's a print left by Tony. It's called "Amalfi Coast".
  13. Noble enough, but I take it, then, that you never, never, never ever buy ANY of the "Proper" boxes either and would rate them in the same camp. Buy them? Nope. Own the music on them? You betcha. I also like to search for the artwork of the original releases, and then catalog them as such in my music library.
  14. Jordi Jr. is also probably shilling for Fresh Sounds, Blue Sounds, Definitive Records, Lonehill, etc. as well. They're all part of the same business (manufacturing, distributing, retailing) that sell music we already own, i.e. in the pubic domain. I take pleasure in occasionally pulling a "Robin Hood" with these reissues, taking from Jordi and his pals and sharing with the less fortunate. I ain't no hero, but I'm certainly not foolish enough to pay for P.D. material.
  15. Stonewall15, There are ways to communicate privately with other members that avoid possible negative consequences for Jim and the board. Inquiries like "Has anyone ever heard of...", "Is there such a thing as...." and so on are sometimes used to elicit responses from interested members via pm and email. Discretion is the key.
  16. There are many Russian-based download sites that take advantage of the Federation's unwillingness to enforce anti-piracy laws. From what I read, Russia had to adopt stricter copyright laws that are more in line with those of other countries in order to get into the WTO. Enforcement in another matter, however. To this date, only two sites, AllofMP3.com and LegalSounds.com, have been shut down. When LegalSounds.com closed down recently, they took their subscribers' money with them! Things don't look too good for the future either. Just a few months ago, Russian lawmakers put forth a new anti-piracy bill that applies only to movies and TV series. They reason that these works are "expensive to produce", unlike music, software, etc.
  17. Lee Tanner, one of my favorite jazz photographers, passed away on September 7th. Here are just a few of images he left us:
  18. Tracks 1-4 feature the Monash University Big Band. Tracks 5-7 feature one of the University's jazz ensembles, while tracks 8 & 9 feature their other jazz ensemble. The remaining tracks feature the school's Small World Music Ensemble.
  19. The EMI Japan site mentions Michael Cuscuna's name. Perhaps someone might give him a call and ask him.
  20. Not sure how to answer your question, but give a listen and decide for yourself: George Garzone - The Monash Sessions
  21. Hometown hero George Garzone has released a big band recording featuring music students from Monash University. It features Garzone's original compositions and a few standards, arranged by Berklee and Buddy Rich alumni Greg Hopkins. As usual, Garzone's soloing is masterful, and it's nice to hear him in this kind of setting. The CD issue is rather expensive, but downloads at Amazon and iTunes are very reasonable. Enjoy.
  22. My list would include the Vanguard, Smoke, Smalls, and the Jazz Standard. However, I'd add the Cornelia Street Cafe and the Jazz Gallery to the list and drop the Iridium and "the trendy room that Wynton built".
  23. No, because the son and his mother were also victims of the father's abuse. Because the son has publicly expressed his feelings of outrage and sympathy for the women who were held hostage and raped. Because Chuck is showing compassion rather than merely venting scorn.
  24. Have you tried turning off the auto update feature?
