He recorded with R& B artists before joining the Ray Charles circle in 1960. From 1962 he played in Basie's and Frank Sinatra's orchestras. After 1967, no recordings, only one reunion with Charles in 1975. The Lord Disco lists Watkins for playing on 110 sessions from 1954 until 1962, when he was killed in an automobile accident. That's amazing for such a short career.

The way you did it can do something like this, bringing attention to an underrated musician. The simple discography is more for those looking for dteailed information once they have been hooked. Excellent job, Dan!

Pulled the Mosaic box this afternoon and listened to it. Still sounds fresh and vital. What more can you want? Doug Watkins was the greatest bass player back then, IMO.

RIP. I was not a fan but really like his playing on Don Patterson's albums, he was the best of all guitarists that recorded with Patterson.

Adding a bongocero to an organ combo is a nice idea, but is Papo Pepin the best choice? Those (probably) LP bongos sound a bit cold and are recorded too closely. Now this is a scuccess. Milan Simich unearthed Lamont Johnson for this CD, who plays as well as in the Sixties with Jackie McLean.
