  1. Thanks - I hope to find the time soon to make some A/B comparisons.
  2. I have the 3 CD box Columbia J3K64275, CD, High Jinks - The Mose Allison Trilogy. There are duplications of some tracks on the third disc which I thought to be alternate takes, but the Lord disco says they are identical: "... the following tunes from the following sessions were included twice on this 3 CD set: "Baby, please don't go". "Deed I do". "Mad with you". "I love the life I live". "You're a sweetheart". "I ain't got nobody"." Anybody here knows what it's all about these tracks?

  6. What a story! What a superfluous death! The CD/DVD combo went right to the top of my wish list.
  7. Picked up mine today, but I doubt I will find the time to read it before Xmas - this needs - and desercves - concentration - at least I need some for this. I'm not used to reading fiction of this level - a jazz biography is easier to degest ...
  8. Sorry this kind of moves into political realms, i just wanted to post some facts for clarification.
  9. A quick research in German web pages reveals these 78's were part of a book published in 1933 by Erich Czech-Jochberg (1890-1966). He wrote a Hitler biography printed in 1930, among others, which sold in 120.000 copies within two years. The book was "Vom 30. Januar zum 21. März. Die Tage der nationalen Erhebung", it was one of several of his publications banned by the NAZIs as beeing "detrimental and undesirable" - he was sidelined by rivals in the party, nevertheless his books were considered NAZI after the war and removed from public libraries, by Russian authorities in Eastern Germany in particular. His books are considered as praise of NAZI ideology and seem to have been rather popular. As a reaction on the banning of his writings he left the NSDAP in 1937, but was imprisoned in 1946 by the Soviets. He managed to escape into the British zone, where he was de-nazified at first but then had to face a trial - I can't find any further details as the respective web pages are restricted to library users etc. . What I found is that he earned his living after the war by limiting his journalistic activities to non-political matters. Used copies of his 1930s books are still sold on ebay etc., with the whitewashing remark "sold for scientific purposes only" ....
  10. Just ordered a copy - thanks for the amazon Germany link.
  11. He won my heart with that tune for Pres - I will buy a copy. Very nice.

    Jack Bruce

Very sad news. To me, the greatest rock bassist ever. R.I.P. How many rock musicians have crossed over into jazz like he did, and with similarly great results? The Tony Williams Lifetime and Escalator Over The Hill, just to name two. Well, no wonder cinsidering his jazz roots. Maybe now we will see reissues of some of his LPs.
  13. Ha, with the last band I played in I had the same idea of playing All Blues with the fourth bar shortened to 2/4 so you have an 11/4 groove ... but we kept the 4 x 3/4 for the bridge. Plus, our feel was more conventional, Oh Well ...
  14. I thought Tones for Joan's Bones wasn't that well recorded, like many Atlantic LPs of the day, so I wouldn't expect wonders from a remaster.
  15. Just listening to All Blues - I can see they learned a lot in the process, but what's the point in releasing that? And they sound different, noticeably different. All of them. Again, what's the point? I too tried to play like several of my idols, and learned that it was impossible to do. You can learn somebody's style, but copy a record note for note? No.
  16. Seems like I might get me a copy for Christmas ... otoh, the Hamp and Herman sets are still calling out loud ....
  17. I thought War was great with Eric Burdon, but was disappointed a bit by their live album without him, too much jammin' without a noticeable direction. I love Azteca, btw.Too me it's not an LA vs. SF vibe thing - it's the amount of jazz and Latin in the mix. Santana was mor rock, although I really love Caravanserei, but that's a standout in their discography, along with Borboletta.
  18. I only have a CDR of the first El Chicano LP somebody gave me many years ago - are these availbale on CD? I find El Chicano to be a lot jazzier, plenty of Wes Montgomery Verve vibes and Eddie Harris in there - and more freewheelin', their conga player was given a lot more room to improvise, not just solo-wise.
  19. Use only genuine Italian hard grain wheat pasta, of course! If you intend to still cook them after wear, refrain from using any fragrances ...
  20. That seems like a reasonable attitude.
