Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
mikeweil replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm crazy. I bid on the Jones/Lewis and won ..... at least I can rest assured I will get a first class copy from a reliable seller, and one of the sets I always regretted that I had to pass while they were around. I'm crazy. Bread and water for the next month. At least after the bottle of wine I am enjoying at the moment is empty. -
R.I.P., and many thanks for the music. Now the two founding figures of Pentangle, Bert Jansch and now John Renbourn have passed ... I loved the music of this band which to this day is the epitome of a successful fusion of folk and jazz, at least for me. Pentangle was a dream band and the ideal for at least two of the bands I played in. I remember searching for and buying all of the band's LPs and many of Renbourn's and Jansch's LPs. I remember getting to meet him in person some time after the band split up, when he was doing concerts with Jacqui McShee as a duo - a friend of mine who was involved in a local folk club managed to get them to play in a very small town not far away, and we had a glass of wine with the two afterwards. As it turned out my friend and John talked about guitar tunings an fingerings all the time, so I had a nice conversation about the Pentangle with Jacqui, which was not such a bad thing. Both were very nice and natural people, meeting them is one of my nicest memories from my student years. Farewell John, and lots of heavenly music ... As things go I managed to find a source for my favourite brand of wine from these years just last week, so I raise my glass to you and wish you well.

FS: My Blues History Box, CD 1-9; Bargain Price
mikeweil replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Yes, please - and is it a good deal in Belgium? -
Wasn't there an all-star Miles tribute on Warner, too (not on QWest)? IIRC Atlantic did a number of jazz titles back then, Kenny Garrett, Bags, Jacquet, Fathead ...

p.s. you can listen to samples on the download page.

Just received this from Trunk Records - a lost gem of Afro-Braziliana from 1958, LP copies go for GP 1.000 - the CD/LP reissue may be limited. very nice rootsy stuff.

Horace Silver Quintet with Joe Henderson, Carmell Jones
mikeweil replied to Late's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My guess is they were there for the ordinary stool in case he wanted to sit higher, but Horace didn't need them. -
Have the McFarland as LP and DL but might go for it once more. Tom Scott's "Rural Still Life" is a very good quartet date with Mike Lang, Chuck Domanico, and John Guerin - rather underrated IMHO. Who else here has heard this?

I noticed the same in classical music, early music in particular. Except for the popular symphonies people prefer vocal music, sacred or secular. Perhaps it is because instrumental music needs more attention, to get the melodic content etc. - in classical music it cannot be words carying the message, rather the direct impact of the human voice, I believe. If I look at the "listening" threads of German classical forums I cannot help but draw this conclusion. And if I look at what draws attention in jazz at the time, it's singers, many on the verge of pop. People have to learn how to listen, in the street, in clubs, in school, anywhere - but do they?

If he manages to get that band to perform over here, I will go see it. Unless it is several hundred miles from here. Til then, can someone who has listened to the CD report how it sounds?

Must have been around that time that I saw him perform with Evans in a Frankfurt club ... I saw him in Feb 1978 with a 13 piece Evans orchestra (Ernie Royal, Hannibal Peterson, Pete Levin, John Clark, Dave Sanborn, Arthur Blythe, George Adams, Bob Stewart, Masambumi Kikuchi, Herb Bushler and Sue Evans). Perhaps you saw him with this smaller group in Oct 1978: Yes that was the band! George Adams and Don Pate were late, so Pete Levin played bass on his MiniMoog until Pate was ready to plug in. Very loose gig, Evans tinkling along at the piano, while Soloff made numerous jokes and grimaces with the other horn players. But Gerry Niewood was the man of the evening, he played his heart out. Thanks for bringing back the memories by posting that cover!

I got cheap used copies many years ago - excellent music, though Tatum can be a little bit too much of a good thing in large quantities.

jazztrain is perfectly correct.

Here's a link to the Sonorama website - release date is March 27, 2015: http://www.sonorama.de/

That's from a hitherto unissued session from November 25, 1960, see Noal Cohen's disco.

Judging from Lord, the Verve CDs have plenty of bonus tracks - there might be some additional complete takes on the Itunes version of the Peterson session.
-
From a short conversation I had with him, I got exactly that impression.

... and what would the music have sounded like? Keepnews put Joe in a lot of different contexts whereas his live gigs were all following the same basic scheme.

Maybe he just didn't want to have another junkie on the artist roster ...

Mintzer plays bass clarinet on one or two tracks of several of his albums - always a treat. Second the recommendation of those Grolnick albums, great music.
