Organ and Vibes- One of my fave organ solos
mikeweil replied to sgcim's topic in Artists & Recordings
Johnny Lytle played with organists most of the time - Lem Winchester is on Johnny Hammond Album, IIRC. But it doesn't happen often. Cal Tjader's The Prophet has Joao Donato on organ all the way, but not Hammond-B3-like. -
No way I will buy this - I usually like it when jazz instrumentalists sing, e.g. Kenny Dorham, Kenny Burrell, Nat Cole - but Bags? No way ...

How Long Has It Been Since You Had A Barbershop Shave?

Same here ... -
That's his only recording, if the Lord disco is correct. Was it a pseudonym? Don't have that CD anymore, and can't remember about the liner notes giving info on him ...

Thanks all! My wife's in bed with the flu, so all festivities will be taken care of next week. But we will attend a concert of countertenor Andreas Scholl's debut as a conductor of Bach Cantatas on Sunday. Still in the aftermath of our removal, so having a relaxed day or two is very nice ...

Yes, there were two volumes of Ellington Is Forever, two double LPs with material cut a several sessions, incl. several all-star sidemen: Jimmy Smith, Thad Jones, Joe Henderson, Jerome Richardson, etc. The music was nice but I didn't like the sound of these sessions. Typical 1970's dead studio sound with bass pickups and all ... Ernie Andrews sang on a few tracks, but I didn't like him. Quentin Jackson's fragile vocals on one tune, OTOH, were very touching. How Long Has It Been Since You Had A Barbershop Shave?

Never had one, but asked my current hairdresser for one a few weeks ago after growing a beard for a few weeks due to lack of time during our move. But sorry, she did only haircuts ... a former hairdresser would have done it, but told it was rarely asked for these days. Ended up removing the beard myself yesterday. $ 40! Good grief! I pay € 15 for a haircut incl. shampooing and tip ... -
Turns out the only Patton on my shelves is "Good Thing" - a really great album. The Yodel and Soul Woman would be great choices for the tribute CD, I agree. But you need a conga player for The Yodel! (Bill Vitts?)

Both did a number of piano duos, so I'm expecting great stuff.

All the best, pisces (?) brother!

The Fischer is on my buy list for March, and the Steig will follow. Is there any sample of Daley's playing on the web? I would like to get an idea of what he plays like.

Can you please move my name down to the end of the list? After our removal (which was originally planned to sometime this summer) there is so much still to be arranged and so much work to be done, I don't even get around to listen to the previous BFTs. Don't have much time for listening to music, it turns out ... I'm sorry, but I can't spare the time I need to compile a decent disc ... strained a nerve in my lower back a week ago, to make things worse, slowing me down even more. I hope I do not cause too many inconveniences for the followers-up ...

That's such a good album ... gave it to my band's guitar player recently, and at the next rehearsal he said it was among the very best guitar albums he had ever heard, and got himself half a dozen Burrell albums from the library ... Hate to promote Yurpean half-legal issues, but recently the complete tracks from that session were compiled on one CD by Essential Jazz Classics - now Universal should have done that at the occasion of their recent reissue, but ... Mine, too - I was so glad Blue Note put it all together on one twofer. I like it so much I bought a second copy during a recent sellout.
-
All the Steig Solid State and Blue Note albums are great, and the double on Capitol, IMHO - took me years to get all the vinyl, but I never regretted it. Steig, Gomez, Perla, Don Alias, Jan Hammer, Sam Brown - great players sharing a vision of loose funky jazz playing.

This is a fascinating disc - not just for the period instrument, but for the sheer intensity of a very personal performance. Usually I can take Liszt only in smaller doses, but I couldn't leave my couch after this disc was in the player. Another specialist performer on historical pianos, Tobias Koch, whom I got to know personally after one of his concerts, wrote an enthusiastic review in a German magazine, and rightly so. This is a recording beyond HIP ... highly recommended. (Link for German reading board members.) (p.s. If you scroll up on the page I linked, you find a list of all available Liszt piano recordings on period pianos.)

Wayne Shorter's Without A Net on the Blue Note label
mikeweil replied to EyeSpeech's topic in New Releases
That's what I thought after listening to "Remembering" - it's more the approach than the sound. Now does the new Shorter disc share that approach? -
Wayne Shorter's Without A Net on the Blue Note label

Haven't had a chance to listen into Shorter's new disc so far, but what arouses my curiosity is the notion that it reminds some of the first Weather Report recordings. Has any of you listened to Miroslav Vitous' 2009 disc on ECM, 'Remembering Weather Report', and if so, how does it compare? I always found it regrettable that W.R. strayed away that much from the free form stylings of the first two albums - if Shorter returned to this a bit it might stir my interest, but I'm afraid it could be somewhat too late ... -
Patton is not among my top five, but will be in, for sure.

At the last rehearsal of our band (where we attempted Zawinul's tune "A remark you made") our sax player said he had heard stories about Shorter and Zawinul insisting they play on different days when booked into the same festival, like they wanted to avoid meeting under all circumstances. Any confirmation - and any other non-musical reason why they decided to split?

Fresh Sound reissued a rare live trio LP originally on Gateway. I must admit It's been ages since I last listened to the Jazz Piano LP that Mosaic reissued ....
