    Neil Young

I never quite liked Neil Young because I think he kind of killed Buffalo Springfield with his big ego - Richie Furay had the better voice, Stephen Stills was the better and more creative guitarist and songwriter ... he's pretty overrated. His voice is awful. The only occasion where I thought he was appropriate was his playing on Jim Jarmusch's film, Dead Man ... but, OTOH there's a lot of guitar players who would have been able to do that.
  2. I had that reissue but thought it sounded awful, like a needle drop ...
  3. Shouldn't that be Hugh Walker ?
  4. Are these going to be digipaks? the design reminds me a lot of Universal's Jazz Originals series. Don't expect any new bonus materials, or reassembling of scattered release patterns. I bet the people selecting titles for the series never have seen the label discographies ... I really would like to see reissues of some sessions spread over several discs ... p.s. I have an older Japanese reissue of the Art Pepper that sounds so damn fine I never considered another mastering. The new CD includes the bonus track from previous issues. Maybe they have learned some ...
  5. Lee Konitz does two gigs in Germany next week, one in my town - I intend to take my wife to see and hear him. She takes alto sax lessons and should have seen him, methinks. Hay anybody here attended a Konitz performance lately?
  6. Growing up in the environment she was born into, she had no other choice ... as controversial as she was at times, she did alot for the consciousness of women and for that of black women in particular. I fell somewhat honoured I share her birthday - I spinned some of her discs last Sunday.
  7. R.I.P. - an excellent organist. Why are there so few recordings?
  8. 1959 may be the release date of one of the later issues with that track - I doubt there was a second recording. Michael Cuscuna would have tried to find it if is mentioned in the more reliable sources. I believe all available takes are on the Annie Ross CD. Bones For Zoot only made it to the 12" LP of the Clifford sessions because the playing time - 26 minutes - was much too short even for Pacific Jazz standards. Richard Bock chose that track as it shares some of the personnel. That's it. And he duplicated discographical errors from other, older discographies - while researching the Cal Tjader disco I found some cases in point - you can draw a line from Jepsen or Rust to Bruyninckx and Lord.
  9. IIRC there are two LPs worth of unreleased tracks from two of the live sessions in the Mosaic box. BTW - I have a soft spot for Shearing's announcements, like the one where he talks about songtitles substituting "lunch" for "love"...
  10. If you pay for transportation and beer ... but I have to leave for work at 10.30, half an hour for two chicks is a bit short ... But thanks for the offer, and, I just remembered my wife will be at home this Tuesday morning ...
  11. Thanks all - it was a very, very nice day with quite a few friends in the house - I'm looking forward to very productive times.
  12. In the Netherlands they live on the great music Hans recycles on his Blog ... Happy Birthday, fellow Pisces swinglover!
  13. Geez, dem grooves are dirty .... but, most grooves are ...
  14. I face a weird problem - no matter what burning software I use, it says there are no CDR-drives or whatever I have - I deleted and re-installed, ran the hardware detection, but nothing helps.
  15. They are simply copying the concept of the latest Columbia box set.
  16. I always thought that the Special Edition and new Directions albums were a bit tame compared to how those bands played live ....
  17. Jazz Echo just sent some info on a new Miles Davis Box including all the Prestige Albums on 14 CDs, the tracklists on the page I linked to look like it's all original LPs. I don't see any reason for this, especially since the old box covered the sideman dates as well on just 8 CDs and the sessions with Trane are available in a box with 4 CDs ... 18. I think the first 50 or 100 sound good, but I do not like they recorded the music after that. Those Carla Bley LPs are mixed rather strangely, with a quite artificial instrument balance - I had both the LP and CD, and both sound virtually the same.
  19. I think it's a Britsh label: Jazz Ball JBR 878 - Jimmy Rowles Trio / 1977/78 (CD) - £ 12.65 (£ 11.00) JBR 879 - Art Farmer & Tommy Flanagan's Super Jazz Trio / Stablemates (CD) - £ 12.65 (£ 11.00) JBR 880 - Cedar Walton / Plays Billy Strayhorn (CD) - £ 12.65 (£ 11.00) JBR 881 - Al Haig Trio / Enigma (CD) - £ 12.65 (£ 11.00) JBR 883 - Sonny CRiss / Blues In My Heart (CD) - £ 12.65 (£ 11.00) JBR 884 - Kenny Drew / Work Song (CD) - £ 12.65 (£ 11.00)
  20. Doesn't seem to be from any of these Andorran labels - Absolute Distribution doesn't list it.
  21. Please PM me a download link! Thanks!
  22. I hope he'll forgive me if I drink some port without gin in his honour ...
