  1. In comparison, I like this better than Orgy In Rhythm or Holiday For Skins - a bit jazzier, and Roy Haynes and Philly Joe add more substance to the whole affair - no simple banging around with these two heavy cats! It sounds more focussed to me than the other two ... Blakey was no real expert on African or Cuban rhythms.
  2. Sorry for being late, I wish all of you best you can have for Christmas, peaceful days, and once again a gigantic thanks to Jim for running this great place!
  3. Well, Keepnews always faced the problem that Lateef's recordings were split between labels that he couldn't possibly talk into cooperation - Prestige, Savoy, Verve ... I still have have his twofer LPs which I bought first, and thought and still think the Prestige twofers are a mess - the Savoy twofers Bob Porter produced are nice. Sometimes Fantasy did a great job completing sessions, but in many cases they simply missed opportunities. Lateef is a case in point, and just for the cause of keeping LP issues intact, which often enough were a mess, too, I think. The best solution would be single layer stereo SACDs - 4 1/2 hours on one disc! And better sound!
  4. Hope mine arrives safely ...
  5. In today's mail I received a Japanese CD reissue of The Blues Book that finally adds the leftover track Groovin' High that was issued on the leftover LP of the same name. I always wondered why they didn't add these tracks to the OJC CDs as bonus tracks. Had to get me this as I recently found a British double CD of all the quartet "Book" sessions on the British JazzLips label that adds the other three leftover tracks - nice to have it all in one package. All tracks recorded at the sessions for The Freedom Book, The Space Book, The Song Book, common denominator is that all are quartet tracks - with the only blues tune from The Blues Book added as bonus track. They did a nice remastering job - Alan Dawson's drums have more presence than on the LPs or OJCs! Seems like I now have all Prestige recordings of Booker, including all of his sideman dates.
  6. I'm glad it arrived here today - just in time for Christmas! # 12 out of 100 copies - I feel priviliged. It's like a Christmas gift to me, even though I paid for it ... On first listen I like it a lot, the tracks without drum machine even better. My wife thinks some tracks sound like those synth new age CDs she use for therapy, but I tell her it's the approach that's different, and we started arguing in no time ... This Cd was not made for the purpose of being used like one of those other synth CDs, it's just music ... an more. Thanks a lot, Jim, for sharing this, and merry Christmas and all the best to you and your family!
  7. Not as far out as Warne Marsh & Illinois Jacquet ...
  8. Congrats! Do her a favor in return!
  9. Thanks Hans - the disc arrived here today. No mail was delivered yesterday due to snow and ice on the roads, but now I have some to listen ...
  10. I have to admit I didn't quite remember and guessed - Bernhard is correct. From Wikipedia: "The company was called Pop-Import Bernhard Mikulski up to 1992, when it was renamed to ZYX Music."
  11. Correct - last week I was told that ZYX originally was founded by a major figure among German distributors, Hermann Mikulski, who had a close relationship to Norman Granz. Mikulski had wanted to buy Pablo, but Granz sold it to Fantasy and arranged a distribution deal for Mikulski, who then set up that network of distributors for Fantasy all over Europe. That disttribution deal was terminated when Fantasy was bought by Concord, who had a distribution deal with Universal. There are still more interesting titles from the Riverside and Fantasy catalogues that never were on CD or only in Japan - some that come to my mind: Riverside Jazz Stars plays Music from Keane several Cal Tjader Fantasy titles from the 1970's Juan Tirado Mambo Band (Prestige) Gildo Mahones (Prestige)
  12. I'm in - still waiting for a CD from Durium, as all attempts to download his BT unexplainably failed ... but this is the first time I had trouble downloading a BT, so just PM me the links and we'll see ...
  13. I'm afraid this will never happen ... but it is an excellent idea! I remember an interview with Herbie Hancock in a German collection - the topic was "The Marsalis factor" - and he recommended Wynton go use the bathroom and relieve himself
  14. Sorry . I tried again, but I keep getting that error message "Upload Skipped (Error406)" ...
  15. I tried to upload a pdf of the Patterson disco I compiled (80 kb) but it displays an error message # 406 "upload skipped" ...
  16. The attachment was deleted during some board crash long ago, will have to upload it agin, tried but failed, so send me a PM with your e-mail and I will send you the file.
  17. I think Glass is heavily overrated, as are most of the so-called minimalists. Riley's original idea was great, but only few created soemting really substantial out of it. I think even Reich is overrated - some well-trained jazz ensemble given the appropriate rules could improvise something like his works with little problems.
  18. Both Wynton and that fan are sick to think their taste is the only valid one - and that's about it.

    Bruce Katz

I think I have one of his CDs for Audioquest - will report after listening.
  20. The problem with these performances is, as great as it is to hear all these fine players do Monk, that it is more of a jam session approach than a carefully planned and arranged event. That lessens the potential somewhat. If you would like to hear these guys solo on Monk tunes, go for it. But they are not as dense as some better planned Monk tributes or Monk's own versions.
  21. Why in all the world do they limit these reissues so much - doesn't take much imagination to see that it could sell a lot more copies.
  22. Can't wait to hear this - but I'm afraid it won't have finished the jump over the pond before Christmas ...
  23. Only veggie burgers for me, with salad, sliced tomato and all. There's a local bakery who makes delicious veggie burgers.
