That's just about the (also reputedly nasty) London experience too. Different strokes I guess but nothing better than great music in a friendly environment. Beats sitting at home with the best recorded music more times than not. The community (even of strangers) of the shared experience certainly works for me

To attend concerts I would have to take an expensive trip to Amsterdam on progressively more uncomfortable public transport. Amsterdam is an open sewer where rudeness and anti-social behaviour are the norm. Then I would have to part with even more money to listen to music in a room full of potentially annoying strangers. You'd have to pay me to go through such an ordeal. sounds like everyone might benefit from your choice

I think the broadcast is set for 30/3 I agree that the first half shaded it. I thought they packed all the best tunes, the Strata East 'hits', in that first purely instrumental half - 'Efi', 'On the Nile', 'Soulfully I Love You'. The second half seemed a little less well-rehearsed to me but Carne's vocals were impressive (Mike Ladd's 'The Bottle' less so). Star for me, Charles Tolliver who seemed 'in charge' of the evening and played beautifully with such a cutting edge throughout the evening. They were all terrific exceeding my high expectations Great evening. Well done to Gilles Peterson for facilitating this. Tolliver said they'd be back - let's hope this is a continuing concern so others get to see this band

I don't - will have to look that one up. Thanks for the rec. 'Window steps' is a lovely recording. No Kenny fan will be disappointed with it. Xybert, the AH Ensemble albums are well worth a listen if you don't want the trio disc to feel lonely on the journey south

The Human Arts Ensemble - Live vol.II [Circle Records] definitely less than $100 but well worth a listen nonetheless

I super dig those early LPs from Minnesota. I only know the Hat with McPhee. Which other ones would you suggest checking out?

Not favourites per se but I've just listened to these two.... Anthony Braxton - Three Compositions of New Jazz [Delmark] Anthony Braxton - this time....[bYG/Actuel] Both are marvellous statements that sound fresh today - I can't imagine what they must have sounded like on release

I think it's the best country soul I've heard since Lambchop knocked me sideways (there is probably lots more out there that I've not heard). I can't but think Curtis M has a lot of influence still in some unlikely places

I've just been listening to the new one on Spotify. Glad to hear all that lush string sound is still there. I love the 'house' sound at Spacebomb so will have a listen to Natalie Prass too. No, I don't know the FTBB.

Read the sequel to this to get a somewhat more balanced picture, if you will and if you care to ... but I'm not sure Steve's point is 'unbalanced'or requires balancing. I was struck by his and Impossible's posts (re: Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamarr) that both widen things to think about how other contemporary and exploratory music in other genres can create a cross pollination for and of audiences.

Big fan of the first Matthew E.Wright album. Yet to hear the new one but intrigued by the Letterman performance which seems more upbeat and 'rocky'
