Wow!!! Thanks for the information of the Hep cd coming out, I didn't hear that. You're right, that is very exciting news. looking for this "thesaurus transcription" cd on the "hep" website but there is no mention on it. i ordered it via jpc. i heard that "hep" has problems but i hope that they bring us more wonderful music in the future. keep boppin´ marcel

yes, me, too! on the schaap re-issued cd the time for "i got rhythm" is giving as 4:51. no time is given on the old double-lp from columbia. (have to compare them with a clock.) keep boppin´ marcel

and the live concert is recorded in stereo!!! this must be one of the first stereo live recordings. i would also vote for 1953. hear also the m.c. at the end were he mentioned george shearing with cal tjader and toots thielemans. a great recording! keep boppin´ marcel

the bass player is ed mckimmey. this photo is from an afrs command performance #140 from september 30. 1944. (and not 1953 as mentioned at the hampton side). the all-american jam session. they play "honeysuckle rose". you can hear this historic recording here: http://www.archive.org/details/CommandPerformance look for the performance with Deanna Durbin, Jack Benny, Ginger Rogers. That's a milestone indeed. I have the 27-tracks-LP-twofer from the Swedish "Jazz Society" label (AA 520/521) with beautiful pictures (Jack Towers), and informative liners by Eddie Lambert. The sound is superb, and the only pity is, that Cootie had left the band short before these recordings were made. http://jazz.com/encyclopedia/williams-cootie-charles-melvin How many tracks are on the CD's? I had a very cheap bootleg once, with some more tracks from that evening (remember a bass feature on "A Train"). But the sound was lower than low-fi, and so I sold it. there is no "a train" on the fargo session. my two cds on the swiss (?) "milan" label has 50 tracks. some are fragments (under 10 seconds) and 6 "chaser" of only a few seconds and one "unknown title" (9 seconds) only. it seems that this milan issue came direct from the vintage jazz classics. sound is excellent! keep boppin´ marcel

the billy berg´s acetates are wonderful! in "52nd street theme" bird quotes "sly mongoose" ( seven years before the recording at the rockland palace ballroom!) and "tico tico". this is t h e billy berg gig that brings the new music to the west coast. the tracks are short but bird plays with such a power it blows you away. a historic recording!!! for me one of my "desert island" recordings! recorded by billy berg on two 10" presto acetates. the rest is slim gaillard and harry the hipster gibson in bad sound performing the hit of the day "cement mixer" and "harry the hipster theme" (all without bird and diz). i suppose the source of this release (on Philology Volume 62 (W 893) and complete on philology volume 73 (w 904) is one of phil schaap´s radio broadcast on wkcr. a must for all bird aficionados!!!!! keep boppin´ marcel

i have this recordings for years and it´s only for clifford completists. sound is (as you can imagine) not too good. but hey, it´s brownie!! hope someday the charlie parker/clifford brown recordings from january 1954 come to light. (clifford´s son are in the possesion of them). i for myself are enjoying such privat and practicing recordings. they round up the whole picture of an artist beside the well known official studio recordings. keep boppin´ marcel

look, i found a fourth review from 1944: in the new and exellent book: "the music and life of theodore fats navarro-infatuation-" by peterson and rehak (scarecrow press 2009) is mentioned at page 68 a review from the billy eckstine band´s december 1944 engagement at the apollo in new york. a variety review surprisingly reveals that parker on this occasion had rejoined the band, and that he and gillespie were heavily featured soloists.
