well, there are in fact four more out-takes of the tunes "i´ve got you under my skin" (9:06); "no more" (6:30); "darn that dream" (11:41) and "you go to my head" (10:42) with false starts, laughter from the audience and so on (richie powell on piano on all of them) that are not included in any issues. it was "issued" on brownie´s eyes, vol. 25, on the "philology" label. look here: http://www.jazzhot.fr/telechargement/disco%20brown%20off.pdf keep boppin´ marcel

oh, what a wonderful album by my all time favourites "jackie & roy"!! everything they made is wonderful and that was the sound of the 70´s. btw it has nothing to do with alec wilder (this time not). all compositions are by roy kral. one is with richard druz and one with jackie cain. keep boppin´ marcel p.s.: it´s a shame that there is only one(!) video of them in the world wide web on youtube..

I love Bird. I also love Fats - to me the greatest of the bop trumpets. I have heard people say something like the quote above before concerning Fats, but I have never really heard it myself in his playing. I know the Prestige date with Lanphere pretty well, which has take after take on the same head, but to me each of Fat's contributions are different. Again with the well known "Nostalgia" on Savoy, there are 2 superb variations on the same tune which are profoundly different. I'm not trying for a putdown, but I am genuinely interested as to what you had in mind when you say that ... Q No, I don't take this as a putdown, and I didn't mean my comment as a putdown to Fats. It's just a different way of approaching a solo. What I'm talking about is probably best heard in the Blue Note recordings with Tadd Dameron's group. For instance: The Chase - Fats starts both takes with the exact same phrase, and several other phrases show up in both takes. The Squirrel - Fats' first two choruses are very similar on both takes - obviously from the same mental template. Lady Bird - Fats starts both takes with the same phrase; after that the solos go in somewhat different directions. There are other examples, but that's the kind of thing I was talking about. Let me be clear that I in no way think there's anything "wrong" with this; it's just a different approach than Bird usually took. I just listened to Bird's Dial session with J.J. Johnson, and Johnson played more or less the same solo on different takes of some of the tunes. When you've got some good melodic ideas, no sense in wasting them. Hell, think about all the Ellington soloists who played the exact same solos every night for years. Fats is also one of my favorite trumpet players, and the fact the he sometimes repeated melodic ideas on different takes in no way detracts from his brilliance. speaking about fats; by the way: here is a good book about fats navarro: the music and life of theodore "fats" navarro, infatuation by leif bo petersen & theo rehak, scarecrow press, 2009. a good book! keep boppin´ marcel

tatum is there with the titles: "the man i love"; "i got plenty o´ nothin´"; "it ain´t necessarily so"; "tabu"; "someone to watch over me"; "i know that you know"; "sweet lorraine"; "i got a feeling i´m falling"; "ghost of a chance"; "hallelujah". the date is given as 1951. attention: the track "blue ´n´ boogie" is a spliced track of two versions of "night in tunisia": from january 6, 1951, birdland, dizzy gillespie quintet (without bird!) and from february 26, 1949, royal roost, parker all-stars. this must be a boris rose "production". (liner notes by e. s. spoe!) keep boppin´ marcel

just found some more in my records collection: on the "black lion" label: from 1944: 52nd street blues; midnight melody; gang o´notes; just before dawn; between midnight and dawn and apollo boogie. all credited to tatum. but strangely the bruyninckx discography states the tracks "52nd street blues; just before dawn and midnight melody as played by frank paparelli!! from the liner notes by alun morgan: "the first side of the lp is devoted to tatum originals,...tatum, like a number of other great solists including stan getz, put his name to remarkably few compositions,...for this reason alone the first six titles would be of interest but in addition a number of the tunes are based on the twelve-bar blues format..." keep boppin´ marcel

what about "battery bounce" with joe thomas, edmond hall, john collins, billy taylor and eddie dougherty from january 21, 1941? and what about "art´s blues" from "the fabulous dorseys" film soundtrack 1946. both are credited to tatum on my reissued disc. "trio blues" doesen´t count? it´s from january 27, 1956 from the tatum group masterpieces? keep boppin´ marcel
