  4. Oy vey. That is, of course, IMHO. Whew - what a thread this is.
  5. Interesting list. FWIW, those are the 2 Tzadik CDs I bought this year. The Jarrett, Schneider, Ellington & Great Jazz Trio would also be on my list.
  6. It is. The McKusick quartet (with Galbraith, Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson) recorded that Bethlehem date plus the Coral 'Jazz At The Academy' album. Both very recommended, indeed! I have both. They're both excellent. The live applause is kind of weird on the live Coral set.
  7. Lots of pontificating in this thread by a lot of you. I'll simply say I was around when Martin Williams (& Nat Hentoff & Ralph J. Gleason) were in their primes, & they were all crucial to my now almost 50 year exploration of what we all love (jazz). There were others (e.g. Robert Levin, Gitler, A.B. Spellman) but these 3 were key.
  8. I am in total agreement about the Venus CDs & agree that Cadence is the best source.
  9. Just ordered a used copy (? remaindered) for $1.94 + shipping. Looking forward to reading it.

  14. http://www.booksamillion.com New only. $18.90. Free shipping for orders over $25.
  15. Anyone heard this? Looks interesting. Only available from their web site.
  16. We Three (Free) Kings on the Roland Kirk CD.
  17. My favorite show. We'll see what happens next week. George Pelecanos has a lot to do with it. If you haven't read his novels, you should.
  18. jhoots - is that Subtextures? What's it like? Yes it is. Great quartet CD (Kimbrough, Ben Allison, Matt Wilson). Starts with Andrew Hill's Cantarnos. Includes 4 Horton originals & one by Frank Kimbrough. 2 classical interpretations (Messiaen & Chopin). Fine playing by all.
  19. I got the new Ron Horton FSNT from Cadence. BTW it's superb.

    Art Farmer

Don't overlook his CDs on Arabesque.
  21. I've said it before, I'll say it again. I like 2 Christmas songs: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - MJQ We Three Kings - Roland Kirk (he calls it We Free Kings)
  22. 2 days from Barcelona to Santa Fe in the USA. Shipping is not cheap (FedEx Air).
  23. Probably would have to be a Conn. - Pepper Adams: Critic's Choice (Lee Katzman, Jimmy Rowles, Doug Watkins, Mel Lewis). Was on Pacific. Has never been on CD as far as I know.
  24. Perhaps Perry Robinson. Of course he hasn't recorded that much later in life either.
  25. Wisconsin beat Maryland, so the Big 10 finally won one.
