  1. Collectables had very poor remastering early on, seemed to get better as they went on.
  2. I found the label's approach in the 70's to be very interesting, something different for a different era, so I really appreciate the recordings by the artists you mention. I think the three Land recordings and the first two Buddy Terry recordings for the label are stone classics, and really am thankful for many others on the label. Different strokes for different folks. But I don't think anyone would argue with you about the sound quality, which always did seem a little out-of-kilter.
  3. Yes, there are a lot of good Mainstream dates left to reissue. Buddy Terry, Harold Land, Galper, Mike Longo, Barry Miles, Hadley Caliman, Charles McPherson, Johnny Coles, Charles Kynard, etc.
  4. My wife telling me to turn off the computer!
  5. Hal Galper says "Why whatever do you mean?"
  6. also AKA Ramon Morris maybe. Must have been a shady character with all those aliases
  7. Straight ahead hard bop, with not-unattractive 70's trappings of electric piano (George Cables) and guitar. I am quite happy with it. Stanley Clarke on bass - he played on a lot of Mainstream label sessions in that period, for whatever reason - Lenny White on drums, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and some players I'm not otherwse familiar with - Bill Washer on guitar and Ray Moros on tenor sax. Recommended if you enjoy that era where things were being stretched. I do.
  8. He is a name I had barely heard of. Picked up his "Heartbeat" CD on Timeless in a trade, and love it. Any thoughts or recommendations on his work?
  9. Got my package and have been listening. Something is definitely wrong with the Land. Either defective master or not from master tapes. Other titles aren't audiophile, but are quite acceptable. But the music on the Land is incredible.
  10. 1 - Apparently true story: Kenny G goes up to Mike Brecker at a jazz festival and says "I think you're the greatest, I don't understand why I'm the one making so much money." To which Brecker replies "Neither do I". 2 -Old joke (questionable taste but very funny): Q: You are stuck for eternity on an elevator with Hitler, Mussolini, and Kenny G. You have a gun with two bullets. Who do you shoot? A: Kenny G. Twice.
  11. In for online listening.
  12. Me too, very glad to have it, even at the higher price I paid.
  13. I have so much music he plays on. Dylan, Richie Havens, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Tom Rush, Richard & Mimi Farina, Joan Baez. Gordon Lightfoot... RIP.
  14. Really liked his work on the Bundles Album with Soft Machine. "Hazard Profile" is a stone classic.
  15. A hard rain's gonna fall all along the watchtower.
  16. I am also stumped, but there are a lot of interested sounds to be heard on BFT 157.
  17. RIP, always dependably good, liked his work on Freddie Hubbard's Backlash album. Wonder why his discography wasn't bigger.
  18. Yawn, yet another version of "Tom's Diner", this one from 20+ years before the original. BTW, it is now April 2 in the UK, so the lost tapes probably self-destructed at midnight. Thanks for sharing.
  19. Columbia was trying to sell records, signed a bunch of topflight jazz guys around that time (Woody Shaw, Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard etc.). Variable results but few disasters.. These, being on BGO, will have spectacular mastering. BGO tends to do related bunches of reissues on a given month, so will be interesting to see what else may be coming our way.
  20. Seems like a lot of the Mainstream recordings always sounded kind of off. I was just listening to the Dave Hubbard the other day, and the sound was pretty ghastly.

  22. Lenox was definitely released first, I remember the shock waves it created.
  23. And, of course the Abomination of Desolation, by another certain alto player:
