Mosaic can't just do what they did 30 years ago and expect the same results. When those BN sets (Blakey, Larry Young, McLean, etc.) were coming out, that was the only way to acquire that music on CD. Since then, just about all of the titles have been released on individual CD's. Same with things like the Columbia Woody Shaw (and the CBS box set greatly trumped the Mosaic in material with the extra disc, price, sound quality, and to me, presentation), the RCA Desmond, etc.

I'm 68. My first Mosaic Purchase was the Tina Brooks LP set ca. 1985 when I was 30 (and what a miracle that seemed to be at the time, as did all of their early box sets). My last box set purchase from them was the Clifford Jordan Strata-East in 2013. My last purchase any kind from them was the Charles Tolliver All-Stars/Paper Man Mosaic Singles CD in 2019, when I was 64. So no idea how to fill out the survey.

1 – Very pretty. Great tone for the tenor sax. 2 – I don’t want to like this, but I do like it. Reminds me feel-wise of some of the Airto Moreira stuff from the 70’s, though it is less organic. 3 – Brother Big Al, you’ve been into one relaxed musical groove this past decade! What’s not to like about this one? Wouldn’t mind owning it if I don’t already. Like this one a lot. 4 – No no no no no! I don’t do steel drums! I guess I’d describe this one as “jaunty” but if it wasn’t so short, I’d be hitting the skip button. 60’s vintage kitsch? TTK might love it, but he doesn’t do BFT’s. Could be from a soundtrack to some forgotten movie of that era. Vinyl source! 5 – Also not for me, older style for both front line and rhythm section. Pleasant, but not anything I would want to hear again for any reason. Again, glad it’s short. 6 – Pass. Outside the domain of my listening. 7 - Tried it, no can do. 8 – Not for me. Has artistic value, just not in any of my grooves of choice. 9 – Better, but this strikes me as easy listening, not jazz. Guitar has a nice tone. 10 – Futuristic! Tenor can play. Late 70’s/early 80’s? I do like it, though won’t be rushing out to buy it. 11 – Works for me. Late 70’s CTI-ish groove to it, though could be later. Not earlier. I’ll look into this one along with #3. 12 – Sounds like Michael Brecker at his most annoying to me, but can’t think of him recording with vibes. I like the vibes and the bass, but the tenor largely kills the track for me. Still interested to find out what it is. Someone like Dave Samuels on vibes? 13 – Like this one a lot. Guessing it is the organist’s album, but I could be wrong. Guessing 70’s vintage. Looking forward to ID on this, and hoping I already own it. If not, will look into it along with tracks 3 and 11 14 – I know this one, my favorite organist of all time, and my favorite album by him! Of course I own it! And the tenor player is obvious! Good, not great. Bobby Watson, Ari Brown, James Williams, etc., but the whole is less than the sum of the parts (or maybe I'm just jaded after 50 years of listening).

My experience with them is that most backorders don't get filled, but some do. I wouldn't base an order with them on backordered items, but would certainly add them to an order I was otherwise going to make anyways. Everything else about them is first rate, and their prices (even with shipping, as long as you make a sizeable order) for Japanese-issued jazz CD's are phenomenal compared to US sources.

It does (or at least did) sometimes, hence the famous Epic/Atlantic Graham Nash (Hollies to CSN) for Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield to Poco) negotiated trade of 1969. Maybe jazz was different under Columbia.

Theories on possibly how so? They were all signed to Columbia at the time in one form or another.

Hard to imagine why there's never been a domestic US release of this one in any form.

Agreed, and totally understandable. He was 17 and 18 years old when those albums were recorded.

Especially on Prestige in the 50's and 60's. "Let's scrape up six cuts from different tapes somewhere in the vault and call it an album".

Count me in for a CD of that one!

I have always really liked this one with Ward, Fred Simmons, and Stafford James. Got it from Third Street Music back in the 70's, then later on CD. Is there a different one with Pullen?

Bought this last year on the recommendation of mjazzg , finally got around to listening to it now, and it's fantastic!
