CDJapan : [Updated] Blue Note 85th Anniversary Reissue Series Remastered by Kevin Gray current Japanese CD reissue series has some McLean, both as a leader and as a sideman, when more is issued on LP here it should be on CD in this series and I've seen them in US bricks & motor at reasonable prices

I agree that Lee's recording of Midnight Cowboy is weak. And I quite like many examples of jazz guys doing hits of the day - on BN back then as we;; as elsewhere and else when.

FWIW, I kind of enjoy this Turrentine 45rpm single, it might be the only tune he and Jeff Beck both recorded

Like they say, YMMV. Which might make a good theme for a song. You could even do it in a bob-like style.

FWIW, I think Murder Most Foul is a steaming pile in pretty much every imaginable way - even if it was an exercise to see if he could write a song like that and he doesn't buy into any of the nonsense he's spouting there. And I think he fully deserved that Nobel, for the early work alone. Bob's an enigma, and it's way too much work to figure out if it's on purpose. JWH might be Charlie McCoy's best album, at least as a bassist, it's certainly not bob's despite a few high points. Maybe Skyline was just bob paying back those Nashville cats for all their fine work on Blonde on Blonde? And the best thing he ever said about other people's music is something he didn't actually say (about Smokey Robinson being America's greatest living poet). IMHO The Band by the band The Band is a better album than anything he ever did, and he did some darn good ones. And it's a toss up whether Street Legal was the most disappointing album of the '70s by someone I cared about or Lennon's Rock 'n Roll is. Shelf Portrait doesn't count because I'm convinced it's bad on purpose, I sure hope so. Am I done? For now.

I concur with JSngry on Monk Higgins, although I do own some version of Stanley T's Flipped/Flipped Out. I dislike the Mizell brothers even more - slicker not better to me. I'd buy All That's Good in a flash, I've come to dig all those weird wordless vocals BNs - Byrd's 2, Andrew Hill's too. I'd buy F Roach's unissued BN just to hear him do King of the Road. Freedom might not be KB's best work for BN, but I'd buy that too. I think there's some interesting repackaging that could be done with BN 78rpm and 10" material. I may not be absolutely a completist on vintage BN, but darn close.

Saw him in a similar band a little earlier. I love folks who play the instrument of their choice and to heck with them that don't get it.

There's easily another LP's worth listed in Cuscuna's BN discography, and listed as 'unreleased' not 'rejected' and I honestly don't trust his notion of what's worth putting out. Good, bad, or indifferent - it's not The Three Sounds, not hardly.

I saw the Country For Old Men tour, which was substantially better than the album which was still not bad, and I think he actually does listen to country some - him reading the lyrics to Just a Girl I Used to Know out loud and then playing it like it was 'blues of a different color' convinced me. Of course I think Goin' West might be Grant's best album, I've certainly played it the most (and not just because it was one of the first GG I bought).

I picked up KB at the 5 Spot 2 CD expanded version the other day and I'm glad I did - enjoying the new material and like the packaging. $25 well spent IMHO, YMMV. Maybe now we'll get the rest of the material from the 3 Sounds at the Lighthouse, their last really good recording for me.

I'm a big fan of Evolution and Spring, but not so much of Some Other Stuff, not at all sure why.

Salt Song, and Sugar for that matter, always left me cold. And I own everything Turrentine did for BN so he's not the problem. I kind of like the version of Speedball he did on Cherry with Milt. My fav CTI albums are probably Outback & Moon Germs by Farrell, Concierto by Hall, and Sunflower by Milt w/Freddie. Lots of great players on the label, but not really a fan of their overall thing. FWIW, YMMV, etc. Nonetheless, nice to see them available at reasonable prices for them that's interested.

I certainly thought the show I saw here in PDX was stronger than the record from that tour, but that may just have been the effect of being there in the same room with 'em - so yes, curious.

Didn't Strozier give up sax for piano at one point due to the declining quality of the cane used for reeds? I share his frustration, but that's a little drastic! A great individual voice on sax, he was.
