  1. Yes...and that's why the audience didn't get once he went too far into the future...
  2. In the West has some good stuffs, esp'ly "Red House" from San diego, but Jimi was v. hit or miss live, often inspired and not within the same show.
  3. So, is it as rude as it looks?
  4. the past is where one usually draws influences from, show me someone who draws from the future...
  5. Has the Bobby Hutcherson funk date from around the same time as Nat. Ill. ever been reissued in full anywheres? I've got one cut on a sampler and I think there are a couple of others that sneaaked out that way...
  6. OK, I watched as much as I could stand, which was not very much. And I don't know if we have a winner as far as the sour grapes theory goes, maybe that's not his motivation consciously or not, but one thing's damn sure, WE HAVE A WHINER and life's far too short for me to spend over an hour listening to that. Or, put it this way, if Lee Konitz (who knows as much maths as anyone) thinks Wayne's playing on the Plugged Nickle is really the shit, and he's said just that several times, who is this little fuck to argue?
  7. This is not good news, get well Sonny!
  8. I am, or used to be, a fan. But after awhile I kinda lost interest, maybe the obnoxious song titl;es had something to do with it.
  9. The Avanti club has a saying, "there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Avanti" - some parts are shared with other Studebakers and generally cheap and relatively easy to find, but some are not. avantis are also hot and tend to leak. On the other hand, an R3 is faster than a first series Ferrari GTO and much cheaper, but there were just 9 genuine production cars. Better option, buy a Lark (very cheap) and build it as fast as you want it to be since it's just an Avanti without the party dress. Car articles by non-car people are generally clueless, as are jazz articles by non-jazz people, etc.
  10. I've been to some of the Normandy beaches and stood in "Germany gun enbankments looking at the concrete the allies dropped in the surf, very spooky still.
  11. ...because they don't sell? I speak as someone who doesn't really enjoy jazz organists. they did very nice big boxes of Jimmy Smith and Larry Young
  12. oh, you meant tobaco...quit both a long time ago.
  13. that quite the tan Konitz is working on there...
  14. 'modern' is utterly meaningless to me, too vague...
  15. 1962 Studebaker, two C-melody saxes from the '20s, a bamboo flyrod and a pocket watch from around the same time, must be forgettin' something else...
  16. & Buddy Colete & Carol Kaye?! interesting...
  17. Harold Lloyd, that's him on the clock doin' his own stunts, right? OMG, that's crazy, funny too.
  18. Do without? Hell, I want more! Like a Harry Warren or Lerner & Lowe or.... but if I had to go all Sesame St and say which one othese is not like the others, it would be the Johnny Mercer, or the Ellintons, but I like them.
  19. Wouldn't have thought they had that kind of money to throw around anymore, F1 cars are notoriously made out of unobtainium....
  20. I could swear I'd posted this already, but none of the music posted in this thread does anything at all for me, for whatever that's worth...
  21. MLL for me - my dad was a huge fan of his "Honky Tonk Train" and of trains in general, honky tonks not so much. But I'vwe come to appreciate them both, and Pete Johnson and many other properly two-handed pianists, over the years.
  22. I've always assumed that his use of electric bass came down to his allegiance to Bob Cranshaw, who happened to switch to electric bass (due to back problems, I read somewhere). When I saw Sonny in Detroit last year, Cranshaw was on upright, while he was on electric the previous two times that I'd seen him. Regarding who Sonny should play with, I think he could poach Joe Lovano's Us Five group for some gigs or recording and make some great music. Poach the band and fry Joe?
  23. Bernadette is also full on paranoid/obcessive, not that there's anything wrong with that - in a song!
