These are My Roots: Clifford Jordan Plays Leadbelly - wierd concept, fine listen. YMMV, etc.

Best Live Performance by Classic Bands
danasgoodstuff replied to david weiss's topic in Recommendations
Coltrane "Creation", yeah that. Beats the official Half Note, and that's pretty darn good. Sonny @ the VV is lovely, but it's hardly a band at all since it was the first time the three of them had played in public (and the last?). James at the Apollo? QMS, Happy Trails? Elvis C @ the El Macombo? Five Live Yardbirds? Stones in Brussels? Miles, Cellar Door, the parts without Johnny McL since he wasn't part of the working band. Ellington in Fargo, ND. A (really great) day in the life of a (really great) working band. -
I'm as big a fan of BF as anyone, but I still think the quotation that starts this thread is a little over the top, no one is all that. Fav album - News For Lulu (atypical, I know); fav gig - duo with Joey Baron; fav performance on Youtube - La La Means I Love You. For now.

More Irritating Than Jarrett's Groanings
danasgoodstuff replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
And if Jr. Brown sang like Jimi and played like Ernest Tubb, yeah it could always be worse. -
On the other hand, I just put the duets with Moran on hold, so?

A bit harsh. Isn't that like calling orange 'red-lite' ! I admit my mind does wander a bit in Lloyd's ECM recordings but I like them, especially the last one. I saw him at the Brecon Festival a few years back and found him very engaging. BBC 4 has a Lonon concert being broadcast at present with Abercrombie. Went out last night and is repeated tonight. Orange is a stupid wannabe colour, and I feel pretty much the same way about Charles Lloyd. That early band with KJ et all was important since it marks the begining of '1st string' jazz bands where the rhythm section consistantly outplays the frontline...

Last time I saw Ornette, he had 3 basses. Amazingly, they stayed out of each other's way(s)...

I loved Harper Collins' "new books similar to this one" hyping of a Joy Division book on the page for Crouch's magnumb bogus... And "Rise & Times" isn't a clever neolism conjoining two thoughts, it's just a clumsy expression of a mixed up message.

Lester Bangs on 10 Yr After @ Woodstock: 'Alvin Lee, grimacing like he was being jerked off with steel wool.' Sounded like that too, IMHO, YMMV, etc. Yes, I know, that makes me AH of the day, but I had to say it!

I 2nd that emotion!

I can't offhand think of much he did with organ except for Smith, Scott & McDuff. One without organ that's as good as 'Midnight blue' is Soul call - Prestige Ray Baretto is brill on this. And non-usual-suspect Will Davis on piano makes it v interesting. MG He did one and a half with Freddie Roach, IIRC

He looked frail, but with it, on local TV here recently.

Album Covers That Make You Say "Uhhhh...."
danasgoodstuff replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Bad cover, good album, with O. Nelson wailing with him on the title cut IIRC. -
...or not!

Lee Morgan's last one, IIRC, electric & acoustic, Jimmie Merit & ? Bitches Brew, or at least parts thereof, Dave Holland & Harvey Brooks

Is he named Q-Tip in the hopes that people will stick him in their ears? -
I thought the Monk v. Liberace thing was from Amazon, that and Craigslist - same level of beligerent ignorance, yet I can't stop myself from reading them!

not youtubery, but a comment on Sanders & 'Trane - "It sounds like cows being slaughtered, but in a good way."

Greatest LPs to never make it to CD

I've got that, and I've seen Elvin in oregon but not with Oregon. -
Much as I hate cartoons and irony, together they work for me here, might actually pick it up if I ever see it and have $ burning a hole in my pocket.

Here's one (among many) that's older, but actually got off the ground a bit more: Can we still get to the one where Moms hates on Kenny, or has that been disappeared like a south american dissadent?
