  1. Certainly, there's potential there but it could go any number of ways - time will tell, said the old man.
  2. Went and listened to some online video: nice voice, nice live band dynamics, but no less an affectation than...well whatever, just a more pleasant one to these old ears, but they got aways to go to get to Etta or Eddie Hinton with the Muscle Shoals guys. IMHO, etc.
  3. Are you thinking of specific titles that have never been reissued? No, I was thinking 'bout how little is currently available, but I see I was (at least partially) mistaken - I find their revamped website confusing.
  4. http://www.bluenote....eter-dies-at-8 finally, maybe now they'll reissue more.
  5. Wouldn't somebody fact check? Not in todays world. My theory, he knocked his notes over and got them scrambled. Or you just forgot. Seems a little pretentious for you.
  6. That's always been my theory. The guy was a notorious workaholic, especially after he moved to L.A. and started getting TV assignments. There's plenty other things he did where it was obvious that he was turning in competent but not really inspiring work in return for a competent but inspiring-enough paycheck. But hey, such is life, no? And when he was inspired, whoa. Ironical then that he did a better job for Pee Wee than for Monk, no?
  7. Have we mentioned them all yet? Damn near everything he did is fine, or at least intereting. Except that record with T Monk, what the heel happened there? Just didn't spend enuff time on it or what?
  8. Gettin' horizontal is better than any albums, or even drugs!
  9. I've already heard a big chunk of this so, nice as I know it is, that makes it a lower priority. #1 priority is getting my spare horn back from Walleys in Oregon City so my daughter can start playing it. Still haven't played the DVD from the '67 box, for what that's worth.
  10. He and Pepper Addams certainly had a thing going on musically, an effective study in contrasts is just the beginning of it, and I always assumed they were close friends too.
  11. "even 'pure improvisors' have comfort zones" True dat, and not necessarily a bad thing.
  12. Any number of label owners too, Eli Toscano and George goldner amongst them.
  13. Lee Morgan had a THING goin' on, and if you like that thing he did it in all kinda different contexts. I do, moreso than Freddie or donald or Blue or any other trumpet player save maybe Miles and brownie and Louis. Sometimes I think of him as a modernist Cootie Williams, but that's probably unfair to Lee and Cootie (and bubber Miley). Lee + Hank + Billy Higgins is groovalicious, but I'm glad there are other flavours too. Had his good and bad days, but who don't?
  14. This may well be the best/worst visual pun ever!
  15. If you want more adventuresome Lee Morgan, there's Grachan Monchur's Evolution, Larry Young's Mother Ship, and his own two last albums.
  16. Hittin' the Note has it for pre-order @$99, i believe.
  17. http://www.amazon.co...ef=zg_bsnr_31_6 Has this been discussed yet? I think it has pretty much all the session work and pre-ABB stuff plus some new live with ABB & the Dead.
  18. This is one case where the CD certainly could sound better than the LP if they took the time to fix what was a kind of strange mix/master, IIRC.
  19. Good article, pleased to see that his advice on how to get by the screening software is essentially what I tell my students in the job search class I teach here at the library.
  20. Really? I find that I almost always disagree with Yelp reviews...which can work too, I guess.
  21. It must have gone bad, the one I had was fine, but then some people don't like its namesake either...
  22. I was disappointed, but then my expectations may have been too high - I think I wanted it to bring me back to being the fanboy I once was and I was also hoping for lots of otherwise unrecorded lineups (how many of those were there?)...
  23. Or is that "The Winning Poles"?
  24. On tenor, getin' down like Gatortail or Illinois Jacquet?
