  1. Lester Bangs on 10 Yr After @ Woodstock: 'Alvin Lee, grimacing like he was being jerked off with steel wool.' Sounded like that too, IMHO, YMMV, etc. Yes, I know, that makes me AH of the day, but I had to say it!
  2. I 2nd that emotion!
  3. I can't offhand think of much he did with organ except for Smith, Scott & McDuff. One without organ that's as good as 'Midnight blue' is Soul call - Prestige Ray Baretto is brill on this. And non-usual-suspect Will Davis on piano makes it v interesting. MG He did one and a half with Freddie Roach, IIRC
  4. He looked frail, but with it, on local TV here recently.
  5. No, it's round records in a three-pack binding - only kind of W shaped if you close up the bottom gap...sorry for the confusion.
  6. I got a Don Elliot W shaped 3 disc EP album at a rumage sale recently, for free! Thanx for reminding me that I need to listen to it...
  7. Bad cover, good album, with O. Nelson wailing with him on the title cut IIRC.
  8. Lee Morgan's last one, IIRC, electric & acoustic, Jimmie Merit & ? Bitches Brew, or at least parts thereof, Dave Holland & Harvey Brooks
  9. There's a whole long thread on Don Was and what he means for Blue Note, but damn if I can find it.
  10. Is he named Q-Tip in the hopes that people will stick him in their ears?
  11. I thought the Monk v. Liberace thing was from Amazon, that and Craigslist - same level of beligerent ignorance, yet I can't stop myself from reading them!
  12. not youtubery, but a comment on Sanders & 'Trane - "It sounds like cows being slaughtered, but in a good way."
  13. I've got that, and I've seen Elvin in oregon but not with Oregon.
  14. Much as I hate cartoons and irony, together they work for me here, might actually pick it up if I ever see it and have $ burning a hole in my pocket.
  15. Here's one (among many) that's older, but actually got off the ground a bit more: Can we still get to the one where Moms hates on Kenny, or has that been disappeared like a south american dissadent?
  16. Sonny R, Freedom Suite AEC, People In Sorrow Miles, He Loved Him Madly Kenny Dorham, Una Mas Allman Brothers, Mt. Jam (breaks all the rules, too bad)
  17. I guess it depends how you count generations, Sam Lay and Jerome Arnold were, I believe, just 7 & 6 years older than Butterfield...
  18. How many met the 'real Miles', probably zero?
  19. Shoulda called it "See what you can do with that Teo"
  20. That trio with RD & RH is sterling, whether you like 'sterling' is another matter...I do, at least in this instance. Also dig Midnight Blue, "Why Was I Born" duo w/Coltrance (typo, I swear, but a good one), and some of his more unusual sideman appearances, like distorted all to hell with Sammy Price and King Curtis. Almost forgot, Have Yerself a Souldfull Little Xmas, love that!
  21. And how could BN's marketing dept miss the opportunity during all the Oh Brother buzz?
  22. Jeff Buckley's Grace and Elvis C's My Aim is True, all I heard at first was the derivativeness - took me a long time to hear what else they had going on (a lot, IMHO).
  23. FWIW, I saw Tal in MN 20+ years ago, was inspired to stay for a second set but then ready to leave half way through that. So, 'subtle & swinging' sure, sometimes.
  24. After having thought about it for decades, finally picked up da bastards reissue of this on CD. And I'm way glad I did, it's odd that it came out on BNBback in the day but he and Eddie Gomez (who I gohot & cold on) and Don Alias are in a zone here. And I'm not generally big on flute either but he makes it do whatever he needs it to do here. Any thoughts on this or his other work?
