  1. This is one case where the CD certainly could sound better than the LP if they took the time to fix what was a kind of strange mix/master, IIRC.
  2. Good article, pleased to see that his advice on how to get by the screening software is essentially what I tell my students in the job search class I teach here at the library.
  3. Really? I find that I almost always disagree with Yelp reviews...which can work too, I guess.
  4. It must have gone bad, the one I had was fine, but then some people don't like its namesake either...
  5. I was disappointed, but then my expectations may have been too high - I think I wanted it to bring me back to being the fanboy I once was and I was also hoping for lots of otherwise unrecorded lineups (how many of those were there?)...
  6. Or is that "The Winning Poles"?
  7. On tenor, getin' down like Gatortail or Illinois Jacquet?
  8. No, he played with that little French piano player - not trying to be disrespectful, just can't remember or spell his name. This was after the revival in the '80s
  9. But the guy's looking through the sound tracks & musicals section. You can see the sleeves of 'Hair' 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Kismet' in front of him. MG It was the 70s. You don't know what he'd taken. I was trying to work out the record he's pulling out. Looks familiar but I can't place it. It's the soundtrack to a film about Jimi Hendrix *************************** Interesting take here: http://www.guardian....P=ILCNETTXT3487
  10. I am, in certain contexts. He's made some interesting albums. Sometimes he leaves me a little cold in the same way that Jeff Beck leaves me cold. I thought that the V5 took a little bit of a dip after FLH joined. The Alchemia set is good in very small doses for me. Interesting comparison, not one I would have ever thought to make...
  11. Is there an actual dance that goes with this?
  12. He also wrote some good liner notes, i have sone on a various artists Boogie Woogie collection talking 'bout Chicago back in the day.
  13. Wonderful idea, some hard choices to make since JP did quite a variety of stuff.
  14. That's what I'm talkin' 'bout - Hank as the voice, not of reason, but of ambivilence and all manner of emotional complexity, backed up with close analysis, yeah those two sets of notes gave focus to my already strong liking for Hank.
  15. Mobley, or at least his work, is indeed deserving of praise, but sloppy/nonsensical praise is not particularly helpful to anyone trying to grasp the import of that work.
  16. Any of the many double bills that Sam Cooke and jackie Wilson played together.
  17. http://www.oldtimey....1losangeles.jpg Some times he was one damn effective billboard!
  18. Sonny Sharrock too! (making it a slightly different combo than any of the tracks on the album, I think SS is on one track but not w/Pullen) I did see this, IIRC they played "All Blues", which was not on the album, and one track from the album. Cosby doesn't bug me that much.
  19. And if Lester is 'whole wheaty', as I think Balliett once said, what's that make Hawkins, pumpernickel?
  20. Sonny Dry Bones would be the cover of Way Out West - but seriously I think Balliett and the rest of them New Yorker writers sometimes got a little too in love with their own cleverness.
  21. https://itunes.apple...pel/id585361950 https://itunes.apple...azz/id585005250 and what else? and why? 50+ years old, nobody ever gave a shit about this and now they do? Sortakinda? Really? Reeks of desperation? Maybe? Uh, yeah? This is about careers, nobody wants to get fired for not protecting their assets...
  22. I think y'all already done thought about this way more than the guy who wrote it, which i guess is kinda the point, but still...
  23. Here's an actual reference question from work I thought y'all might be able to help me with - anyone know anything about an American (I presume) singer named Barbara Buchanan who made an album called American Favorites? Given what said album looks like and what I know about the caller, I'd say MOR pop, not jazz. Thanks.
  24. But did Bird help him decide which note was The note?
