  1. It doesn't add up/hang together as an album, but it certainly has its moments, IIRC.
  2. I've got a list of examples for all these at home that I got from an ear-training book, I'll try to remember to find it and see what I can come up with.
  3. I heard him jamming with the locals at 25 Below (such a clever name) in Saskatoon, after a gig with Sonny a few years ago, but I haven't caught his trio live. There's a fair bit on Youtube, IIRC.
  4. Phil & Don had a blend that was, IMHO, just exquisite. Songs Our Daddy Taught Us is one of my favorite things, ever.
  5. I 'mamber hearing RJ I thought was 'rubbish', some I thought was OK 'for what it was', and a little bit I thought was just plain pretty damn nice, period. 51 is way too young in any case.
  6. I think many people think kinda the opposite, that they'd rather hear More Milt, preferably somewhere else. I've just come to accept that the MJQ is its own thing, different than the work of any of its members in other contexts.
  7. Indeed, you should...even when he was conpletely full of it, which was only sometimes, he was still worth reading.
  8. Hearing him quote Wade In the Water on one of those made me wish he'd done a full album of gospel/spirituals. I may be the only person sorely disappointed that they didn't include his take on Hey There Georgey Girl and Up Up & Away on the session they were from....
  9. I finally got this the other day after I took $50 out of a poker machine. Some of the in/out choices are odd, but programming a big chunk of the first ABB album right after Boz Scagg's "Loan Me a Dime" makes a pretty effective argument for the Brothers being a big step up from even the best session work.
  10. I love Stan the Man, have ALL the BNs, none of the CTI - I've heard bits and pieces and will probably get them eventually, just saving them for a rainy day. Among his many virtues is his ability to get the most out of a melody or riff, if the tune has anything at all to it, he'll get it. Much like Grant Green in that regard.
  11. Andrew was on staff here at Portland State University - I would hope someone interviewed/taped him then, but my impression the one time I met him was that he was painfully shy...
  12. He talked about how "serene" Herbie is, and said he could use some of that. And what a gentleman he is, Bill didn't say but I think he could use some of that too.
  13. I have this! should listen to it soon...
  14. I'm a huge fan of Johnny Gimble, alum of the both Bob Wills and his brother, and a guest on many Willie Nelson albums. Also Claude Williams and Joe Venuti deserve mention in this thread.
  15. it's...the sound of surprise! or zen, or something...
  16. Prisoner of Love is the name of the album I referenced above, the clips I've heard sound pretty darn good, and kinda like the gig JSngry played....
  17. This is why Studebaker had to quit selling cars!
  18. Got it and a Mosaic catalog in the mail yesterday, I'm leaning towards the Bud Freeman single.
  19. Great clarinet too, difficult although he no doubt was, BG could certainly play some.
  20. My domestic CD version has both shortened and full length versions and outtake(s) IIRC!
  21. At least that's how it should have gone if the refs/editors had been awake!
  22. Gopnik tackles Ellington and the Beatles, but wait...there's a flag on the play, unnecessary roughness (of analysis) and it's now first and 15!
  23. Folk = World, Reggae = World, therefore Folk = Reggae, nonsense of course, but I think something like that may be happening. And I quite agree that 'folk' has issues but that there's no better term for much of what goes in that bag, much less all of it (which raises the question of whether it all belongs together).....roots, rock reggae! as they used to say. My LPs are generally not in categories (except tribute albums), my CDs are, both decesions space driven.
