  1. I ended up holding off on that "New York-Addis-London" cd; it's oop and goes for $40-$50 now. Instead I purchased this cd/dvd concert recording done in LA in 2009. It's not exactly preserving the original 1960s-1970s vibe, the solos are way more adventurous than his earlier recordings. You got Azar Lawrence, Bennie Maupin, Phil Ranelin, plus a bunch of other American cats in the band. Sound is good for a live recording. The packaging isn't good, the cd and dvd are housed inside very tight cardboard envelopes, which scratch the disks, but just superficially.
  2. I was lucky to see him perform last year. He was wonderful, but it was obvious he was in a lot pain and could barely stand up, relying on a band member to basically carry him around. Al addressed the audience to describe his immobility as a result of bad spinal surgeries. RIP...
  3. My name is Dmitry, and I am an internet addict. Seriously.
  4. Yeah, but can your pussy do the dog?
  5. This interview is very funny. Tommy can spin a good yarn. This story does need to be made into a movie.
  6. I'm on a Morris Levy trip as of two days ago. I don't remember seeing the Roulette stickers. What did they look like? Roulette distributed Mainstream records? I'm quite sure Shad knew Levy full well. I agree with John's of course, the packaging for those gatefold jackets was excellent, the cover photos were top notch printing quality, similar to the Horizon packaging. Seems strange to have put in so much into the packaging, not to invest in distribution. Never encountered the Fuller album, btw...
  7. Trees and Grass and Things was a chance buy for me, and boy, did it pay off. A trippin' record! I like the packaging also, but I can see how it can be a pita to open and close without ripping it apart. The very few copies I've seen all were white label promos, probably for radio play. I guess it wasn't a big seller.
  8. http://www.clickondetroit.com/entertainment/singer-aretha-franklin-i-am-retiring-this-year-after-release-of-new-album She's coming to venue nearby in the Spring, and never having heard here live, I checked out her latest albums, Disco Divas or something like that, and I think it's the right decision for her to gracefully retire from performing. What are her top 3 records, in your opinions?
  9. So the demise of the brick and mortar shops, and their replacement with the on-line shops really didn't open a window for increased number of sales for you? The formula is still the same, going through a distributor, waiting to get paid, etc.? How do you know how many copies of a particular title to print?
  10. Thanks. All in all , nothing earth-shaking happened. Most of those deleted sets, save one or two, are available on eBay at reasonable prices, sometimes at original cost, sometimes just a few bucks more.
  11. Direct sales, like Mosaic? Or it doesn't apply in your case for some reason or another?
  12. Sounds like a very tough racket for a small label. Things must've improved in the internet age?
  13. I know nothing of record business, but wouldn't their exposure have been exponentially greater if they sold through retail?
  14. Two happy lovers. Lady looks quite happy in the egg chair.
  15. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Levy This reads like a mob movie script. What a character... I'll never handle Roulette albums in the same way.
  16. Where was Mosaic advertising in the pre-internet years? Downbeat, I'm sure. How about major record store chains? Any reasons why they didn't want to distribute product in the record stores?
  17. Otoh, just reread a couple of old threads re:Hardbop, and I retract my retraction. Dude was definitely no lamb.
