What live music are you going to see tonight?
Rooster_Ties replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
My wife and I were at both sets that night too! -- my first time hearing Schneider's group (which played in Columbia, MO (2 hours drive) quite often, but never quite to Kansas City, where I lived for some 17 years - and I never got around to getting down to hear her). Anyway, such an amazing evening!! I really loved "Data Lords" (my favorite tune of the night), and you can REALLY hear how the general feeling of the tune came out of her work with David Bowie (the tune they did together, "Sue (Or In a Season of Crime)" is most definitely a cousin-composition, at least in timbre). IN addition to the tunes you cited, I also remember a really great version of "Love Theme from Spartacus" (also featuring Rich Perry, iirc) -- which, to my ears, was the most Gil-Evans-ish-sounding tune/arrangement all night. Would have liked to have heard a couple more trumpet features, but overall, an incredible evening. I wish I'd suggested to Ms. Schneider at the autograph table between sets, that she might consider doing an entire album of jazz-orchestra arrangements of all of Bowie's Blackstar album (which she clearly loves). I'd probably personally kick in $200 on such an effort through Kickstarter (or ArtistShare). She had a semi-(in)direct hand in Blackstar even coming into being the way it did, so it might even be fitting. I heard/read somewhere recently that "Lazarus" was the other tune that Bowie had brought to her (in addition to "Sue"), but that they hadn't gone anywhere with it. -
How many CD's worth of music do you have on your phone? Honest question. That was always my issue, that I could never load even but a tiny fraction of my collection onto my phone. Even my old iPod nano (which held at least 60-70 albums, maybe 100?) didn't even begin to hold but a fraction of my 3,000+ CD's. That, and it's a pain in the ass constantly having to upload (and later delete) CD's from iTunes -- in order to change what was on my phone. A complete switch-out of even 50 albums would take a couple hours (iirc), so I finally said the heck with it. When I can grab 3-4 CD's off the shelf, and play 'em right in the car, why go through the hassle of the phone? That's what I did in Kansas City, and I probably listened to 10-20 CD's per week, between the car and playing them at work. I mean, it would be great to have all my music on my phone, but that wasn't possible (at least when I last bought my phone, which is an iPhone 5, with 16 GB).

Do I have to upgrade my iCloud storage to back up the phone to iTunes? (In other words, is that what "backing it up to iTunes" is? And if so, do I have to pay a monthly fee for the extra storage?) Have to confess, I never even downloaded iTunes to our new laptop a couple years ago (when we had to get a new one), because I just never got around to it (since I only ever used it to get CD's onto my phone, which wasn't worth the effort if I could only store like 10 albums). I did half-consider going back to using my old iPod nano, which held like 60-70 albums, and was great!! But then I thought iTunes would try and synch all those same albums with my phone (which there wasn't space for), and I thought it might be a problem. I have to confess, I never even put my credit-card into iTunes, and only ever used it to upload CD's (since that was the only way to do it).

Can't say I have (ever restored my phone). I presume means going back to the original 'fresh from the factory' state. I'm assuming I'd have to re-download all my apps (write them all down, and search and reinstall all 30 of them). I assume(?) that would also mean wiping all the photos I have on it (which I really hadn't wanted to do), unless I paid more for iCloud storage. I kind of figured I'd upgrade to a new phone in a couple more years (when they hopefully brought back the earphone jack, knock on wood), and I'd be sure to get more memory this time (like 32 or 64 GB). My experience with this iPhone hasn't been bad, but it's getting more sluggish and/or locking up more and more (so my opinion on it is starting to shift). And the top 'reset' button stopped working a couple weeks ago (just completely stopped), which has kind of been a pain - but I have to just let it timeout to let the screen go dim again.

The Music on my phone currently is about 903 MB (only 8 albums). When I first got the phone several years ago, I loaded about 20 albums on it, but over time, I kept getting closer to running out of memory (so I'd just delete a couple albums, and/or a few apps). Right now, the top 10 apps on my phone (by size), are... Photos/Camera - 2.66 GB Music - 903 MB Weather (Channel app) - 577 MB Mail - 445 MB Google - 362 MB Messages (text messages) - 308 MB NPR App - 164 MB Google Maps - 139 MB Pandora - 132 MB Yelp - 124 MB And I've got another 20 (or so) other apps on the phone (but only 9 of them are over 50 MB) -- but I do really use most of them a fair bit. I know too many photos is a big part of the memory issue, and I try and go through and delete stuff I don't need, but I really need to figure out what (if anything) I want to do with them, other than just keep them on my phone. Maybe I should try and get more iCloud storage, I guess (I've gotten messages forever telling me to upgrade to more iPhone storage, which I presume entails some monthly fee). But I'm not so thrilled about storing that stuff out in the stratosphere (not that I care if anyone sees any of them, but it's more like out of sight, out of mind, but then if they disappear, it could be months before I even knew they were gone). When I first started with the phone, I did upload different CD's to the phone, but then I always had to delete them from my phone (to upload others). But then I also had to delete them from iTunes (on my laptop), because I had to limit what I kept in iTunes on my laptop (or else it would all get bigger than what I could upload to my phone). Frickin' pain in the ass, all of it, if you ask me -- which is probably why I haven't bothered trying to reinstall iTunes on the new laptop we got a couple years ago (when our harddrive and motherboard died/got fried). I guess I'm a bit of a technophobe, but really, the amount of energy and time it takes to mess with this stuff just isn't worth it to me. Which is why I'd much rather have 3,000+ CD's, than have to worry about trying to store stuff on a hard drive, and somehow keep it all backed up (and not ever lose any data), over multiple technology changes over the next 30-40 years (or whenever I shuffle off this mortal coil).

Harry Whitaker /w Rene McLean & Terumasa Hino, circa 1981-82

Here are tracks 2 & 3 from the disc (separate tracks on the CD, parts 1 & 2 of the same song)... -
When you own 3,000+ CD's, and an iPhone 5 (with only 16GB memory), it's a pain in the ass to have to upload and delete albums in order to listen to them in your car. With the other apps on my phone, I can only hold about 10 albums (at most), so in order to give up CD's in the car -- I'd have to constantly delete albums from my phone, and re-upload new ones weekly. Kind of helps that I don't even own a car any more, granted, but when my wife and I rent Zip cars for the weekend -- if they don't have a CD player, I'm pretty much limited to listening to Pandora (as I normally pack about 32 CD's for every trip, in one of those CD flip-binder things). No way my phone can hold 32 CD's of music, though (or not without deleting a ton of apps and photos).

And in related news... Tommaso Cappellato & Astral Travel play Harry Whitaker's "Black Renaissance"... Seems to be from the same performance, but (more?) multi-cam? Or maybe a different show? -

Following up a little late on this -- but yes, I certainly did. -
I've got to confess, I'm not certain I've ever heard ANY(?!) Gary Burton on record before (though I've certainly been aware of who he was for 20-25 years). Neither any of his leader-dates, and nothing from his list of sideman appearances either, far as I can see. (Or if I have, certainly nothing I've ever owned -- maybe a date I borrowed once, a gazillion years ago.) Basing my statement on the discography here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Burton

Did The Mothers & Don Ellis Ever Perform On The Same Bill?
Rooster_Ties replied to JSngry's topic in Artists
I think "Peaches..." is a lot better 'tune' than the Hot Rats version really represents. That said, I'm sure there are other Zappa renditions (of "Peaches...") that I could say the same thing about (and even many covers of the tune too). It's one of the more "hooky" things Frank every wrote (and probably "hokey" too), but the melody is about as accessible as he every wrote (well, except for "Sofa" - nothing goes down much easier than "Sofa"). On an (un?)related note -- does anyone else think of the closing theme music from Saturday Night Live, when they hear "Sofa"?? Not an exact match, I realize, but god damn if they don't feel more similar than two 'not-actually-the-same' pieces of music ever could. -
I don't know the Ravi disc specifically, but I love his tone, and I see it also has Ralph Alessi (trumpet) on some tracks, which is usually a big plus. FWIW.

Only way to get the complete "alternate" version of "Miles Ahead", afaik, is on this box -- which is worth it's weight in gold (at least to me). Always seemed like a shame they never did release the album as a single CD, with that complete "alternate" as bonus tracks -- instead of the 3-4 alternates on the single-disc version they DID do. I know, I know, it was probably to push people to buy the whole box (which I would have bought anyway) -- but it would be really nice to share that first disc from the box with more people.

Has anyone seen a track-listing yet? I just checked the first dozen search-hits on the (Japanese?) catalog number above, but none seem to have anything (nor the English translations of those pages). Very curious if everything is all standards, or if there are any Mobley originals. I'm in regardless (but probably not quite to the point of pre-ordering -- I'll probably just try and get it from The Bastards), but would still love to know all the details.
-
Mine too! - and the first disc I thought of. Totally unlike any other French Horn date you'll ever hear (it's basically an expanded remake of Don Cherry's Complete Communion) -- and a really winner of a disc, highly recommended!!

I think there's a few more titles than just those listed in the first post. I know I saw this one, that I was entirely unaware of (all synclavier), and from my sampling of the entire thing off Youtube, it appears to be a bridge between Jazz From Hell, and Civ Phase III (and seems to mostly date from shortly after Jazz From Hell). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feeding_the_Monkies_at_Ma_Maison Thought sure I saw other titles too, in a Steve Hoffman Forum thread on the subject.

Carpe diem, if there's anyone here who doesn't already have this one. One of the very best (and arguably important) historic finds of the last 10 years.

Album Covers Featuring Musicians In Costume
Rooster_Ties replied to duaneiac's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Peter Gabriel wore a LOT of weird stuff back then, so I'm not entirely sure if this qualifies for inclusion (based on the criteria stated in the very first post in this thread): "Costume" would be defined as clothes not typically worn by said musician while at work or in everyday life. In any case... -
At least 4 cameras, by my count. Really nice footage, as great to see as hear!

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low

The Farmer single disc is nice, the only Mosaic single I think I ever got, iirc. Great selection of songs, and playing too, of course. -
Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
Rooster_Ties replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I thought the price of the selects was just fine. ~$15 per disc, the same as the big boxes (per disc). Sure, I would have liked to pay less (who wouldn't?), but it never stopped me from buying 15 Selects total. I think I got lots with a 10% discount, or with free shipping (I'd wait until there was a sale of some sort, about once every 18-24 months), and I'd order practically EVERY set (big boxes and Selects) that I felt strongly like I knew I'd get eventually anyway. So like clockwork, I'd drop about $300-$400 on a bunch of sets all at the same time (once closer to $500, iirc) -- about once every 3-4 years. But ultimately the price wasn't much of a deterant, and if there had been more Selects I wanted, I'm sure I would have ponied up. $35 per Select would have been "better" (sure) - but $44 wasn't all that much more to get some *awfully* damn good material. -
Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
Rooster_Ties replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Dark days. Anyone have a link to the announcement/discussion about that here? I've forgotten just how many sets disappeared almost overnight as a result. Was it all/only Selects that bit the dust in that clusterfuck? - or did any big boxes disappear from lost masters too? Dark, dark, days. -
Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
Rooster_Ties replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So what happened with the Selects series? I know, they couldn't make the $ work (somehow), or some reason along those lines. But was there anything else more specific? What is it about the Selects that made them unworkable (as opposed to the big boxes). I mean, if they can't make the Select series viable, what in the world is keeping the big-box series viable? -
Thx for looking, but that's not it (and not a square-bottom tie either, I'm afraid, look close at the pic -- and I'm almost positive most diagonal-stripe ties weren't square-bottom -- very few). This one ISN'T the photo I'm looking for, but it's not terribly dissimilar -- light-colored shirt (iirc), and he was at the kit (sticks in hand, iirc). Kind of an "action" photo, I think. Again, this one **ISN'T** the one I'm looking for, but this is kinda similar (and he's leaning in the same direction too)...
