  1. Now up for pre-order, via The Bastards™ https://www.dustygroove.com/item/142903/Jim-Alfredson:Family-Business
  2. Benedetti / Parker wasn’t a limited edition. Mosaic owned that music, far as I’m recalling, and weren’t contractually l limited in the number of sets they could sell — iirc.
  3. My wife and I were always fans, as were my parents — especially my mom, who also loved Tom Lehrer (and she had all Lehrer’s albums). Anyway, Mark Russel’s PBS specials were nearly always appointment viewing (or we sure tried not to miss them whenever we stumbled across them on the schedule). His brand and style of political wit seems to be in ever shorter supply with every passing year for about the last couple decades, give or take… Sharp (well, often) and funny (sometimes very) — but the kind of ‘funny’ that brings a broad smile (and often) rather than much genuine LOL laughter. RIP political funny-man. You’ll be missed. https://www.washingtonpost.com/obituaries/2023/03/30/mark-russell-satirist-pianist-dead https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/30/arts/mark-russell-piano-playing-political-satirist-dies-at-90.html https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/show/political-satirist-and-comedian-mark-russell-dies-at-90 https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/mark-russell-r-i-p/
  4. We both feel a fair bit better today -- not quite half better, but close. And we got a bunch of Altoids, mint gums, and spicy hot candy (Hot Tamales) in our order from the store last night — so that metallic taste is now pretty well in check.
  5. I bought my first set in 1995, and very steadily right after that — a couple a year, on average fairly quickly — starting at age 26. That was 28 years ago — where does the time go???!!!!!!
  6. Knock on wood, food still tastes right (and kind of surprising ok, even almost good) to me — my wife too — so far at least. The metallic taste from the Paxlovid seems to ‘only’ happen all the time — whenever I’m not eating (or drinking) — but thank goodness food actually tastes good.
  7. So I know it’s been discussed a little in the prior/lost thread — but I would pre-order day #1 anything by or having any Billy Harper. A number of his own leader dates are super hard to find (especially on CD) and/or a few(?) have never been issued on CD at all. And of course there’s at least 3-4 hours of the Max Roach Quartet with Billy Harper from 1977-78 — none(?) of which has ever been on CD at all, far as I know (or else it’s rare as hen’s teeth). But it’s spread across four (4) different labels — including Horo, which is impossibly difficult to reissue. (Sidenote: Has there ever been ANY reissue of ANYTHING on Horo that was ever done legitimately? Certainly not on CD, far as I know — though I know of at least one really nice ILlegit-reissue of one of the Sun Ra Horos (or is the plural ‘Hori’?) on CD, with fab liners and everything, and on a silver disc to boot! — pun intended.) Anyway, even if you leave out the Horo Max Roach Quartet with Billy, there’s still — what? — four(?) single albums, probably barely 3 hrs of music. But maybe there’s some unreleased stuff too? But, yeah, even without the Horo, it’s across 3 other labels. All that said, Billy Harper would seem like exactly the sort of artist deserving of the Mosaic treatment in some way.
  8. My wife just tested positive this morning after her first symptoms came on all day yesterday — and she’s already had her first dose of Plaxlovid about an hour ago. Yeah, this constant taste of nickels is getting really old fast (my last dose will be Monday morning, and my wife’s will be Tuesday night)… BUT, I’m incredibly thankful there are medicines to treat Covid now — and this awful taste is nothing compared with facing this thing unvaxxed or without any treatment. The OTC Tylenol Cold & Flu meds seem to be keeping all the other symptoms halfway in check too. So I’d say I keep going back and forth between being “half” or about “one-quarter miserable” at worst — and that’s really not all that bad, all things considered. Still, interestingly(?), my symptoms have gotten moderately worse every day since I first felt anything on Monday night (3+1/2 days ago). Which is to say there seems to definitely be an ‘arc’ to how this thing progresses. Not especially worried about it — just my observations.
  9. Just drank some hot chai, and I’m happy to report it actually tasted like chai (and not a mouthful of nickels). So maybe(?) that plaxlovid-induced metallic taste is just what ‘nothing’ tastes like between meals?
  10. Man, barely 90 minutes after my first dose of the plaxlovid, and I’m already getting that metallic taste in my mouth. Damn glad I ate when I did!
  11. Just took my first dose of Plaxovid. And knowing that it may f-up my tastebuds for the better part of a week — I quickly had dinner… the last of some homemade chili from a couple days ago, over a BIG piece of cornbread. AND, when I make chili, half the time (this time) I use Ethiopian Berbere spice (instead of chili powder). The DC/DMV area is home to a quarter of million(!) Ethiopians — and 40 or maybe even 50(?) different Ethiopian restaurants. And in our neighborhood alone (Columbia Heights), there are 2 or 3 different corner market stores that sell Berbere spice in bulk (an Ethiopian chili spice blend). Figure it might be my last really good meal until 5-7 days from now!
  12. Absolutely, I was fully vaccinated and fully boosted. My first vaccine was the “one-and-done” shot J&J (that’s what I could get first, and back then they said get whatever you can get, don’t be choosy. So I’ve only had 4 shots total (just one initial vaccine, and 3 later boosters) — where most other fully-vaxxed people have had 5 shots.
  13. I’m getting Paxlovid literally within the hour — probably already at the pharmacy, or will be shortly.
  14. Just tested positive myself this morning, symptoms started Monday night (sore throat, chills, body-aches — all moderate). First time either me or my wife have ever gotten Covid — she hasn’t had any symptoms yet, and she was already gone for work when I took my test this morning (the test I took Monday was negative). We live in a 630 sq-ft 1BR shoebox, so the real trick will be keeping her from getting it. It’s crunch time for her at work for the next month, so I said I’d take the couch the next 4-5 nights (a 2-seat loveseat, so maybe I’ll take the floor). And we’ll both mask up 100% at home, stay away from each other, and hope for the best. I’ve had plenty of head-colds worse than this, and the chills I got from both my Shingrix shingles vaccine shots a year ago were a lot worse than the chills I had last night. Just gotta wait it out.
  15. I set up an eBay auto-search, that emails me whenever a new particular match is listed — so if happen to notice the next email (in a month, or 3 months, or who-knows-when), I’ll try and post it here.

  17. Much as I might personally hate to say it — I tend to agree, Dan (agree with you, Dan, that the judge probably got it right on the law). Doesn’t mean that I don’t think some details of the law couldn’t use some updating to provide some sort of more reasonable access to some kinds of things — out of print works still under copyright, but otherwise inaccessible. But as the law stands, this ruling is probably more correct than otherwise.
  18. Chuck, is that a Google-mail link to a real email address? (If so, can you send the actual email address.) Afraid I don’t have a Google-mail account — and the URL is trying to make me sign into my (non-existent) Google-mail account (Gmail, I suppose that is). Thanks!
  19. Cripes, Discogs? For what are still-in-print titles? Or is my memory that Steeplechase kept titles in print for forever long out of date? I remember being able to order practically anything on Steeplechase back when I was in Kansas City — admittedly that was probably 15 years ago.
  20. Michel Petrucciani?
  21. Exciting news!!! And Alex Sipiagin is a real badass. Cannot wait to hear it! PS: Jim, if you end up selling these directly (and especially if that’s a better deal for you financially)… then NOTE to other DC folks, I’m glad to put in a single (big) order for all of us, so we can all save some on shipping too (presumably). Would also make for an excellent excuse to hookup with more DC/DMV-area people too, face to face at some point.
  22. I've got that disc, I'm pretty sure -- definitely, I just pulled it off the shelf. Here's the details... Tracks 1-8 originally released as 'Grits & Gravy' (Prestige 7486) Tracks 9-10 previously unissued Tracks 11-16 as 'First Class Kloss!' (Prestige 7520) https://www.discogs.com/release/3407629-Eric-Kloss-First-Class (US issue) https://www.discogs.com/release/4265139-Eric-Kloss-First-Class (German issue) Identical discs, covers, probably liners too. The "notes" section of each entry on discogs has different (complimentary, not-conflicting) info.
  23. Did the Twardzik Night Lights ever happen? (My googling tells me “no”.) And was the WBGO broadcast archived? — is there a link out there? (Still looking for that myself, haven’t found it.)
  24. Surprised that it’s only 3 Booker Ervin dates — because I thought it was like 5 (or maybe even 6?). But I guess that because there just 3 different Ervin sessions — which only came out spread across like 5 (or is it 6?) different LP’s. Always hard to keep track of without a scorecard (and even then). I knew and have the Kloss dates, but had no idea of Woods date (in 1974? - wow, lot later than I was imagining this trio working together). And I guess the Eldridge was just a live one-off thing. But I’m also surprised there weren’t some others I wasn’t aware of — just the Woods, if we’re counting studio dates.
  25. Seems like this rhythm section -- Byard, Davis, and Dawson -- recorded together quite a bit. As a full trio, they're on a metric ton of Booker Ervin dates -- and on a number of Jaki's own leader-dates too (and Jaki also used either Davis or Dawson, but not both, a few times too). I'm wondering where ELSE these three recorded together (especially all three) -- backing whom? -- and if there are any dates with all three of them that are more obscure or lesser known (but worth tracking down). And I guess to extend the discussion a little (which, face it, is gonna happen here inevitably anyway)... I suppose we can also include any dates with just two out of all three of them (but please try and point that out, to make it a little easier to distinguish between all the times ALL THREE of them recorded). Does anyone know of a list of everything all three of them recorded on together? Maybe we could develop one here.
