We have a name for our new kitty -- Nikita!!
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Actually, Jim, I think you were more right the first time with Shaft. (re: "Li'l Puss") I think the new cat is a bad-ass. I think she's gonna end up being the dominant one. Pepper was 2nd banana to our previous cat, Emily (who we had to have put to sleep). Emily ruled with an iron paw!! We let the cats see each other briefly a little while ago (probably too soon, actually), and it was the NEW cat who pitched more of a fit than Pepper did. -

Nothing's been rejected yet (well, other than "Spot" ). (And, actually, Natasha kind of has a nice ring to it.) Just brought the kitty home for the first time, about 10 minutes ago. -

Sorry Joe, you just got emphatically vetoed by the wife. -
My wife and I are all set to bring this sweet kitty home from a local animal shelter tomorrow, and we need to come up with a name for her. Our other cat (also a female) is named Pepper, so we need a name that doesn't sound too similar. My wife picked her out (she's always liked gray cats), so you'll have to sell my wife on the name. Ideas?? Edit: Some ideas we're coming up with: Smokey, Misty, Sophie, Sasha, and more as we think of them.

most misleading jazz lp of all time
Rooster_Ties replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
Where's the one with the "New Sounds from America" (or some such similar title), which was actually Euro players (maybe Denmark?) The one with the guy holding the trombone the wrong way?? ("Hey, you're black and could look like a jazz musician, here, hold this!") THAT would have to be pretty misleading. -

This really is pretty close to my all-time top five... 1. Hans Werner Henze - Requiem (1993), for trumpet, piano, and 26 instruments (but NO chorus or vocalists). 2. William Levi Dawson - Negro Folk Symphony (1934/52), my nomination for the greatest "American" symphony yet (followed closely by one of the Ives, maybe #2?) 3. Samuel Barber - Symphony No. 2 (1944/47), which Barber ordered destroyed in 1964 (and thus it because the much less known of his only two symphonies). Thankfully it was reconstructed in the 80's from a set of orchestral parts that were found in a warehouse (and previously thought to have been destroyed). 4. Brahms - Piano Quartet #1, orchestrated by Schoenberg thusly (1861, orch 1937), occasionally even referred to by some as "Brahms' 5th Symphony". 5. Kurt Atterberg - Piano Concerto (1935), a HUGE neo-romantic work that gets a little bitonal in places, every bit as much an "integrated" symphony/piano-concerto "hybrid" as Brahms' first piano concerto. I've given out a dozen or more copies of the Henze over the years as a sort of calling card (I buy 'em cheap whenever I can).

LOVE that pic of Anthony with the paperclip contra. (I've got a soft spot for contrabass clarinet. ) Don't suppose you could share a bigger version with the board, just for my curiousity??

Ho do you set the amount for used cds?
Rooster_Ties replied to porcy62's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Check Amazon's used marketplace (already mentioned), but also check half.com (which is at least as good, and sometimes even better than Amazon's used stuff, depending on the title). And for potentially more pricy things that aren't totally uncommon -- there's 30 days worth of sales data from eBay (sometimes useful for checking some more common OOP stuff, like BN Conns and such.) -
About damn time. And it better include material from '67 and '69 -- not just earlier stuff.

Can somebody somehow take a snapshot of it, and attach it here?? The link does work for me, but the image with the sculpture doesn't come up (drat).

This post seems to indicate the problem was with disc #1 (not disc #3), and that was my memory of it too.

Up for another try...

My wife and I will be driving up to Minneapolis (from Kansas City) sometime later this year for an event - and we're thinking of extending our visit by about a week for some vacation/r&r. Trouble is, we've already been to the Twin Cities several times (most recently just last summer), and we already spent close to a week in and around Madison, WI on that same trip (last summer) too. We've also already seen most of Iowa over the years (except for maybe far, far western IA). 1) Should we go east to Milwaukee and Racine, and other stuff all around there in far eastern WI?? 2) Or go west through western Minnesota, and then down through Souix Falls, Souix City, and Omaha?? 3) Or are there other ideas we're overlooking?? Bring 'em on! Note: I'm guessing we probably don't want to go 400 miles north of Minneapolis, since that'll just double our drive-time back to Kansas City. But we could probably go as much as 100+ miles north. PS: Don't want to get into exactly when this trip might be (since this is a public board and all (nothing like broadcasting to potential thieves when you won't be home for a long period of time)), but suffice to say it won't be during the dead of winter. Other considerations: We're history and museum junkies. We're also BIG fans of historic architecture, especially Prairie Style and other early 20th and mid-century moderne styles. We also like staying in B&B's.

Hill's music didn't capture my attention immediately, by any means. I bought the big Hill BN Mosaic back in May of '95 (just checked the receipt), mostly for all the sidemen that were on it that I loved (and not really for Hill as such). I think it may have only been the third Mosaic set I'd ever bought, and the only Hill I knew was Point of Departure. Couldn't make head nor tail of it for two or three years. (If this tells you anything, back then, Dolphy's presence on Point of Departure was so prominent, that I actually used to file my single-disc issue of POD under Dolphy, and did so for years.) Then somewhere along the line, things started clicking. Not everything all at once, but little by little, more made sense. I'd put on two or three discs of the big Hill Mosaic in succession, and drink it all in. Then I'd go months without the urge to hear any of it again, sometimes even as much as a year. But when I came back, I always found the music more rewarding that I'd remembered. Even now, I'm still amazed at how new, fresh, and exciting each Hill date sounds, especially the longer it's been since I've listened to them. I've said before, it's as much the PROCESS of listening to Hill's music that has me hooked (that process of repeated rediscovery), as much as the music itself. Don't know how to say it more clearly than that - but the music has been more rewarding to me over the years than I could have ever possibly imagined.

How can I lose a box set?!
Rooster_Ties replied to Hoppy T. Frog's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Several years ago, wasn't there somebody around here (not me) who's 5-year old lost an entire Mosaic set once?? Something about a car trip to McDonalds or something?? (And my memory is that it was the Hill big BN box.) No it wasn't me (no 5-year olds in my live, save for our nephew who's never been within 5 miles of my Mosaics). -

Nope, sure doesn't. Just like you describe, not even a "?" symbol, nor red 'x', nor anything. Can't attach it to this message either, it's a bmp file that's too big (and I don't know how to convert it to a jpg). -
Happy Birthday Rooster Ties!

Yup!! And that's what I'm telling my wife... ...since the sale is just for my Birthday, I *have* to take advantage of it... ...right??!!! -
Gosh, no, I'd never consider "Mothership" a trainwreck, not even close. It's top-drawer in my book. I'm sure it was "Of Love and Peace" I was thinking of, though not specifically because of Eddie Gale. No one player bothers me more than any other on that session - it just needed one more rehearsal is all. I still like the energy of it, though. (And it's no less a mess than disc #3 of the Hill BN Select.) To answer the other question, I've had the lost Tyrone date for about a year now.
-
"Passing Ships" kinda fits in this category (slightly). It's not a big, huge mess - but it's under-rehearsed a fair bit here and there (and there, and there...). Both it, and disc #3 of the Hill BN Select are probably two of my top-5 alltime favorite Hill discs (and yet they're easily among Hill's least "perfect" recordings, to put it mildly). Has anybody else connected deeply with that last disc of the Select? Sangry? Anybody?? Another date that's a bit of a mess (but still very valuable), is "Of Love and Peace" (and maybe also "Contrasts" to some lesser extent). I always get those two dates confused, but I'm pretty sure it's "Of Love and Peace" that sounds less rehearsed Tyrone's unreleased leader-date (IMHO).

Many thanks, everybody. Funny, in some ways, 41's hittin' me more than 40 did. Still haven't a clue what I want to be when I grow up.
