  1. You mean he didn't know the composer of "JATP Blues", "Blues For Norman", "Jam Blues," and "The Opener"?
  2. I'm no audiophile, but I think the Rowles on Fresh Sound set sounds about the same as the Pacific. There's no detailed info about their remasterings, but the Nocturne box was done in collaboration with Babasin/Harte. There's no info if there are still any masters around, there's just one name for digital transfers/masterings given in the booklet.

  4. Ha, you're all too generous! I don't drive, so I have to come on the back of a horse or some such... or hope no one will slit my throat on the greyhound Anyway, I'll bring some Jever pils to make sure you'll allow me in!
  5. Well, this isn't about competition, really... the Rowles album is a bit of an outsider in both boxes, and the rest has no overlap. But still, it's worth pointing out what a fine set that Nocturne one is!
  6. Too bad there was never (and as I understand, will never be) a Vol. 2! I think a few more sessions were on OOP Fantasy CDs, but I never managed to find any of them for sensible prices and don't want to pay a lot of money for discs where I have half in the Vol. 1 set!

  8. Happy Birthday, Garth! Hope all is well!
  9. Most won't notice, but all this crap about celebrities and other totally unimportant stuff *is* politics, in the way that it is meant to (and succeeds in, mostly) keep people from bothering about the important stuff...
  10. Still have that Shank/Cooper Select. Would be willing to trade it (for the Art Pepper Select - NOT SO SURE ANY LONGER ABOUT THAT! or) for the Pres 4CD set. New one for a new one, used one for a used one (I have one sealed of the Shank/Cooper and one open with a tiny scratch on one disc, but nothing to worry about!)
  11. Bumping this up... I finally got hold of this set, as I've mentioned elsewhere. Played it all by now, and it's very, very nice to have! Not one that jumped in my face and sounded like the greatest most thrilling stuff, but certainly one that will grow on me! I have a question about the Jimmy Rowles set though. That one was released on Liberty and was initially planned for release on Nocturne. Fresh Sound did a 3CD set "Complete Nocturne Recordings, Vol. 1" - a mighty fine collection of music with a good booklet - quite out of the ordinary, compared to their track record, and while maybe not legally cleared, Pujol seems to have been in touch about that with most of the musicians, who contributed remembrances etc. In Jimmy Rowles' case, he also contributed two more tunes, an alternate take of "Let's Fall in Love" and the previously unreleased "All the Things You Are". Why did Mosaic not include those? Might Pujol have done a "better" job for once by getting in touch with the musicians, while Mosaic "only" went the "usual" route by digging through the archives, looking for the masters etc? This is the Fresh Sound 3CD set in question: http://freshsoundrecords.com/record.php?record_id=1228

    Ralph Towner

Played "Solstice" twice in a row last night - pretty good one indeed! And the photo of a young Garbarek is funny! He seems like an unpretentuous guy there... tempi passati!

    Ralph Towner

Ha, that's kind of funny Happy Birthday to Mr. Towner! I don't have many of his recordings yet, but the two Touchstones (Solstice and Batik) are fine! And his recent one, "Chiaroscuro" with Paolo Fresu, is very good, too!

  15. Cool! Didn't notice yet as I just flipped through. But allow me to say I enjoy your photos a lot! Many of them come from an era when jazz got less and less public attention and hence they document a lesser known era too (to a late-comer such as me, at least, who's familiar with tons of 50s and 60s photographs by Wolff et.al.)
  16. Edward Furlong The Gubernator Beuys (... ohne Sonne... kein Reagan... )
  17. Each time this thread pops up I think: "again!?" Don't the US have more important issues to think of than this chap? The funny thing about sports is that in some kinds of (soccer, hockey...) it's part of your image to have lots of affairs (and have ones with your best buddy's bird, too - unless you're captain of the UK team, then that's not a smart thing to do), but golf is oh so elitist clean and everyone has a perfect white shirt, of course of course... - effing hypocrites all over!
  18. Saw Elina Duni and her band last night - wonderful music! She's from Albania originally but has found her home, it seems, in the Swiss jazz scene. Her band is stellar, with Colin Vallon at the piano, Bänz Oester on bass and Norbert Pfammatter on drums. Very sympathetic, to say the least, and as much at home doing straight stuff as well as odd metres, which are needed in some of the tunes, as Duni does mostly traditional songs from the Balcans (from Roumania, Greece, Albania, Kosovo, Bulgaria...) and in between she does some Gainsbourg, Ferré or (as last night) Nick Drake ("Riverman", also the closer of the new disc). Check out some of her music, she's really good! In two weeks, Yasmin Levy will play here - anyone seen her in person? I have two of her albums and like them a lot, but I'll be at Abdullah Ibrahim's concert the night before, so I'm not sure...
  19. Marvellous package, just got it and flipped through the book - wow! Thanks for letting me know about this reissue! Will report back once I've listened to the set, but that might be a while...
  20. Reminder to self to haul down this set ! I'll gladly help if I can get it after you've finished listening Now playing: the (I hope) well-deserved Pacific Piano Jazz Trios - disc 1 right now, the Freeman is delightful, the Twardzik truly amazing... played the Rowles a couple of days back, so it's on to the Fischer afterwards... Anyone knows why the two bonus tracks from the Rowles session (an alternate and an unissued "All the Things You Are") weren't included here? They're both on disc 3 of the Complete Nocturne Recordings Vol. 1, and Pujol there says both were given to him by Rowles to use there. That set seems to be one of the few legitimate things coming from Fresh Sound (besides of course the FSNT series), and it's a delightful one!
  21. Got me a used copy of the Cherry set last week, now the only one I don't have (besides the Gismonti on ECM and the unreleased Metheny) is the trio set with Rubalcaba - how's that one?
  22. I'm pretty sure the Dragon Miles four cd set has been cleared and made legitimate; back in the mid-nineties when all the Miles boots were bing pulled from the shelves and not able to be reordered that one (and in its DIW form as well) was always around and remains available. Same for the Europe 1 concerts releases on Trema. All legitimate. Which was not the case for the Esoldun CDs. Their only connection with the government-owned organization was that the music was 'borrowed' from their vaults. That's good to know for both sets! But what about the LaserLight versions of the Trema discs? It seems back in their early days, LaserLight did some legit stuff (like three volumes of Jazz in Baden-Baden discs featuring Oscar Pettiford, Donald Byrd and many others), but nowadays they look like a blatant rip-off, too...
  23. A fine disc indeed! I think it was mentioned on the ECM new releases thread... I kept it myself, in case anyone wonders!
