The Gullin tribute disc Jim refers to is also on eMusic. Up over and out.

I do love the term "new reissues". It sounds like something Yogi Berra might say if he was a jazz fan. Up over and out.

I wonder if it's the name or the scent that's making this one popular. If you think it could be the former, you might consider renaming some of your other candles as a marketing strategy. Either way, good luck to you. I've been following this thread for so long, I almost feel like I've purchased a couple of your candles. Up over and out.

Blues for Gassman is almost impossible to find. Believe me, I've tried. A couple of months ago, however, I almost fell out of my chair when it showed up on eMusic. Needless to say, I downloaded it instantaneously. Edited to indicate this is still available on eMusic along with: Parlami D'Amore Mariu'. FWIW, from someone who has more than a few, mostly Basso & Valdambrini together, I'd recommend The Best in Modern Jazz Italy 1962 (the one pictured in king ubu's post) along with Exciting 6, one simply called Quintet and one other, Stella By Starlight. I am less enamored than Marcel with the Dino Piana album. As may be obvious, I'm partial to the earlier material by the duo as opposed to Basso's later solo stuff. Most sorry to hear of his passing. He's provided me with more than a few good moments. That's about all you can ask of anyone. Up over and out

NFL chat thread

Not only does this new television screen get in the way of the game, but it's so large, it's also a distraction for the fans. The only thing in the state of Texas that's bigger than the state of Texas is Jerry Jones' ego. If the 'Boys went 0-16 every season, that wouldn't be good enough for me. On a more somber note, I'm worried about my Eagle's. First Brian Dawkins is allowed to walk, then Jimmy Johnson passes away and, finally, Stewart Bradley screws up his knee and is out for the year. Combine this with the M.A.S.H. unit also known as their offensive line and all the scoring in the world isn't going keep the good ship Philadelphia afloat. Up over and out. -
Aaron Rowland's batting stance is a dead ringer for that of former Dodger third baseman, Ron Cey, a.k.a. The Penguin. Up over and out.

Sports Illustrated had an article on their website the other day about the worst contracts in the history of baseball. Toronto's Vernon Wells was number one, Jose Guillen's deal with the Royals was second and Barry Zito third. Up over and out.

Why is it whenever Tim Wakefield is mentioned, I can't help but think of Aaron Boone? Does anyone else out there have the same problem? Up over and out.

I stumbled across this by accident. It's a series of stills celebrating the career of Victor Feldman. The real reason it's worth "viewing" is to hear the private recording of Chick Corea's "Spain" that accompanies the video. When they hit the groove about a minute in, it just takes off. This guy was one fine pianist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q4DQWDfrME Up over and out.

I unleashed the power of Google to see if I could figure out who the drummer was. I think it may have been Ron Lundberg. He did some recording with Barney Kessel in the mid-'60's and was in Pee Wee Russell's band when they recorded "New Groove" in 1962. Up over and out.

As much as I dislike compilations consisting of nothing but ballads, there is a series of these called Plays for Lovers that might be right up your alley. Not only are there many different artists represented, but it will give you a chance to sample different styles played on different instruments. At some point, you might want to expand your horizons and take in some more aggressive material based on who you find that you like amongst the slower stuff. Another source is the Prestige Moodsville series. If I recall correctly, there were between 35 and 40 albums released under this imprint. You should be able to get a list by googling Prestige Moodsville. These titles were specifically tailored to what we sometimes call the "dinner jazz" contingent. You might also want to consider joining eMusic. It's a fairly inexpensive way to sample lots of different artists. I'm paying about $.26 a song under my deal, which is a darn sight more reasonable than $.99 at iTunes. With regard to specific recommendations, don't pass up one called Ballads by Ben Webster. It's on the Storyville label. The last time I checked, it was available from eMusic. Trust me, no one, and I mean no one, plays a ballad quite like Webster. Up over and out.

Another Sinatra related story. When The Doors were first signed by Elektra Records and brought to the studio, Jim Morrison was shown the microphone he would be using for his vocals and recognized it as the same microphone Frank Sinatra used on many of his recordings. I guess he was a big fan. Up over and out.

Happy Birthday mspepper aka straight life!
Dave James replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yes, happy birthday. And, thanks for your steadfastness in making more of Art's music available. I'm sure at times this must seem like trying to push a peanut up the hill with your nose, but your efforts are much appreciated in these parts. Up over and out. -

One of the hardest parts of starting this thread after I decided it was worth posting was in which forum to put it. I chose "Miscellaneous Music" but it could just have easily have been placed under two or three other headings. Anyhow, immediately below is a link to a very interesting, if somewhat lengthly, article from today's New York Times that chronicles the development of the soon-to-be-released Beatles video game. Some of the points the article makes have some relevance to the current thread about the future of jazz music in an abstract, connect-the-dots kind of way. I've never played Rock Band or Guitar Hero, but after reading this, I'm more tempted to do so than before. Get some people together, have a few road pops, grab your Hofner bass or your Rickenbacker guitar and away you go. Kinda sounds like fun. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/16/magazine...wanted=1&hp Up over and out.

Another nice one from Blue Note featuring Renee Rosnes is "When You Wish Upon A Star" by The Drummonds. Renee is on piano, Ray Drummond on bass and Billy Drummond on drums. I believe Billy is Renee's husband. Up over and out.

The Road to Woodstock - Michael Lang. FWIW (two books that feed my WWII Jones): Hitler's Mountain - The Fuhrer, Obersaltzberg and the American Occupation of Bertchesgaden. The Reich Chancellery and the Fuhrerbunker Complex Allen, with regard to Kerouac, who'd have thought this guy practically invented fantasy baseball? Up over and out

Mike Rowe, now that's a guy I like. He's kind of like the new millenium's Marlboro Man. Up over and out.

Chet Baker's singing is like tasting beer for the first time. "You gotta be kidding me. How can anyone stand this?" Then, after awhile and with repeated exposure, you learn to like it. An acquired taste if ever there was one. Personally, I come down on the "it's fine with me" side of the fence. Even later period Chet, when his voice was completely shot, is listenable to me much in the same way Lady in Satin Billie is listenable to me. If you can't hear the jazz life in those voices.... Can Jazz Be Saved?
Dave James replied to mjzee's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Agree with my Oregonian cohort, Jazzmoose. Seems to me several years ago there was a medium sized dust up over a Branford Marsalis concert where he was downright dismissive of the audience because they didn't "get" what the band was were doing. That's the kind of attitude that accompanies art, not entertainment. It's also a great way to make sure you don't get many gigs. As soon as musicians start thinking they know more about what the paying customer wants than the paying customer, as far as I'm concerned, they can hop a fast boat to China. Up over and out. -
When I come across the show, I usually watch it for awhile. Pretty interesting...like Jeopardy on wheels. What I can't figure out is why they schlepped Mr. Bailey all the way up to Dutch Harbor, Alaska to moderate the After The Catch segment of Deadliest Catch. What's the connection? Up over and out.
