  1. As long as were on this 80's tangent. I was thinking of music videos that I was actually entertained by. (1)Money for Nothing-Dire Straits.Poking fun at MTV. (2)Just a Gigolo-David Lee Roth.Seeing Billy Idol electrocuted did it for me. (3)Two Tribes-Frankie Goes to Hollywood.Rather timely considering recent events. The planet blowing up at the end was intense. (4)Money- Paul Hardcastle. Rather obscure but having Sir Laurence Olivier and Bob Hoskins in it was pretty cool. (5)Cold Shot-Stevie Ray Vaughn.I just about laughed through the whole thing.
  2. Holy Cow! Delusions of Grandeur! Delusions of Grandeur!
  3. Africabrass- Not a thing wrong with having some "guilty pleasures". A lot of those Sherrill arrangements have actually endured much better than a lot of traditional country. If there's any country fans grousing about someone like George Jones doing non country songs because of those Sherrill arrangements they're not grousing too loud because most country fans would consider, examine and reject any such arguments. As for myself if someone asked me for an example of a classic country recording one of the first ones that would come to mind would be Jones's "He Stopped Loving Her Today".
  4. How about a comprimise? The RVG of Horace Silver"Fingerpoppin" and Paquito D'Rivera with the New York Voices?
  5. Big Al I'll second that on Hubert Laws. While I'm at it I'd like to cast a vote for Phil Woods"Live at the Showboat".The complete set is still available on vinyl only (grrr!!!) but it is a great document of a band working well together.
  6. danasgoodstuff we are indeed pretty much on the same page. Thanks for bringing up Charlie Rich. I heard "the Most Beautiful Girl" so many times when it was popular that it really got on my nerves but I've mellowed towards it over time. In retrospect Charlie did some really good work. Africabrass even though Billy Sherrill will never be associated all that much with a hardcore traditional country sound he nonetheless produced some of the classics with Tammy Wynette,Charlie Rich and George Jones(not only "the Grand Tour" but also "He Stopped Loving Her Today"). Jazzmoose I'll see your "Wolverton Mountain" and raise it with Red Sovine's "Teddy Bear".
  7. Here's another vote for Ry Cooder and Manual Galban. That's one that will never wear out with continued listening.
  8. Gosh! I can't imagine a year without seasons! You should have lived in the Imperial Valley in California. It's one of the many reasons I'm glad that I don't live there anymore.
  9. I haven't checked out Gal Costa but that is an artist I've really been curious about. If I had that set staring me in the face I'd grab it in a heartbeat.
  10. You talk about one too close to call. I gave the nod to Wayne but not by much and that's one where I could change my mind. Here's another vote for Trane too. In a nutshell Lee was a good partner for all these guys.
  11. Great topic!!! If I'm not careful I could get really revved up on this one. Here's another vote for the great Carlos Santana! Also the band that his brother Jorge fronted, Malo was pretty hot too! Others include Los Lobos, Laura Nyro,Frank Zappa,Steely Dan,Dan Hicks,Little Feat,Ronnie Earl,Rod Piazza,Luther Allison,BB King,Buddy Guy,Leo Kottke and a group that has gotten a lot of mention here recently-the Pentangle and these are just a few who come to mind!
  12. danasgoodstuff-just to clarify I don't have a problem with the early country/pop sound. What I was trying to get across was for those people who prefer the more traditional sound and were upset by the pop elements in todays mainstream country music. Those people point a finger at today's mainstream country artists when in fact country and pop mixing has been going on for sometime. clarifying part two-while I don't have a problem with the early pop/country sound (Patsy and Jim Reeves were quite good and the arrangements served them hansomely)I still think some of it is dreck but perhaps not as much as today like Toby Keith and Travis Tritt(two legends in their own minds.)Shania and Faith Hill(Yecch!!!). Thanks to artists like Patty Loveless and Dwight Yoakam country isn't in the vile state that it was when Olivia Newton-John won a CMA award but a certain degree of stagnation has set in or like George Strait and Alan Jackson sang "Murder on Music Row.
  13. mike b thanks for the tip and thank you Lonson.
  14. Toby Keith,Travis Tritt,The Eagles.Hell why not put that sorry ass Mutt Lange in there and some of those country boy bands that seem in vouge these days. That does it I'm officially sick.
  15. Claus Ogerman arrangements and Bossa Nova are hitting the spot right now.
  16. Garrison that Philly Joe story was incredibly sad.You guys must really have this desire to make music deep in your blood.I'm constantly amazed at the amount of crap you have to put up with. Can I assume that you don't have the protection of a union wherever you work or you do you just don't want to have anything to do with the union or would it be harder on you if you tried to affiliate with one?
  17. The Dodgers did have a good opening day(forever Dodger blue!!!).I was reading Bill Mazeroski's baseball magazine and he picked LA first in the west-we shall see!!! A team that might surprise in the NL central are the Pirates. Will they win the division? Doubtful but they might have a bigger say in who does.
  18. I had never heard any of John Martyn's music but now you've got me curious.
  19. Additional thoughts.Johnny Cash continued to do quality work even after his hitmaking days were over.Anybody wanting to lament todays country music and there is a lot to lament-might want to assign blame to Ray Price,Jim Reeves,Patsy Cline and even Marty Robbins,Conway Twitty and Sonny James-all who brought a lot of pop influences to the table.
  20. danasgoodstuff-No problem for the delay.I appreciate your response.I agree with your observation on Johnny Cash.Hank Sr. probably deserves to be #1 because of his impact on country music but I do think that JR should be somewhere in the top five because of his tremendous output of classic music. Please don't tell me that Billy Ray Cyrus placed ahead of Bob Wills,George Jones and Marty Robbins. If he did I will be officially sick.
