John Lennon Biography

Here's what he wrote inside his own book—I won't comment on it, except to say that the book rests on my shelves, largely unread. -
Do We Even Need Jazz Critics?
Christiern replied to medjuck's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Shrdlu: But I do like Leonard Feather, Nat Hentoff, Dan Morgenstern and several others. I bet they're glad they weren't Protestants 6 or 7 decades ago! -
I didn't know that Cullum was doing that sort of thing—I bet it's effective. That said, "fade" is the wrong description for what we did in N.O., the live band was listening and little by little picking up the tune—it was their fumbling around to find the tune, chords, etc., then suddenly getting it and bursting forth with it. Imagine a faded old photograph going from monochrome to color and from one to three dimensions as you view it. It's good to learn that some of my old Organissimo friends are paying my blog a visit. I will soon post the follow-up Chicago nightmare.

You cannot level such critique at this little giant, who follows the path beaten by Leonard Feather and refers to himself as "The world's pre-eminent jazz critic." Larry, you are totally out of line here! It was when Gary cast his wee shadow over me (at a cocktail party, I believe) that I learned the true meaning of humility. Apropos unassertiveness, the door is always open at http://stomp-off.blogspot.com

I turned down the sausages, but gave them permission to translate and publish my article—an interview with Manfred Eicher. -

I wasn't serious, having had dealings with that which was once behind Churchill's Iron Curtain. At least the Poles were up front when they wanted my words, many years ago—they told me that they couldn't pay me in any currency that I might find useful, so they offered to do so in sausages. Really. -
The Prisoner - New AMC Series
Christiern replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I deliberately missed it—liked the original too much and just can't imagine a remake that won't disappoint. I did watch part 1 of Collision and will be following that series. Stay tuned for yet another "let me see, what can I post to get my total up?" -
Teachout's Armstrong bio

That's amazing, as far as I recall, "Klactovesedstene" was the tune Louis had most fun playing. -
Outspoken love for jazz—that's a good one! My failure to appreciate Cosby's humor may have its roots in my personal experience with his fraudulent self (50 years ago!)—not to mention the way he exploited the death of his son and how he has treated jazz musicians.

I didn't check it out, but when did Cosby become funny?

Teachout's Armstrong bio
Christiern replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
It was published in Europe. We are next, and it is imminent, if not a done deal. -
I saw it in Iceland, on its first run, and wasn't the least bit scared. Around the same time, I saw the transformed queen in "Snow White". That really scared me. I eventually learned to accept and enjoy red apples, and now, 70 years later, I have it in Blu-Ray format (looks great, btw). I saw it in Iceland, on its first run, and wasn't the least bit scared. ipods: is there something a non-hifi person can use
Christiern replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Audio Talk
Apropos cradles, I have 2 for my iPods... This one does not have a radio This one does Both also work with my little clip-on shuffle, come with a remote, and can be plugged into my TV to run movies or stills. I have to confess that making selections is a bit awkward, especially if one has a massive file, but I like to be surprised, so my Pods tend to shuffle for me, as it were. : -
Scott Yanow is obsessed with numbers, I have the impression that music is secondary—it's not what he listens to, it's how much he listens to. I bet he has already got that info compiled and on one of his lists.

Idiot Facebook question -- How can I make
Christiern replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Go to iPhoto and select the one you wish to use. Then, in iPhoto, go to the drop-down "File" menu and select "Export". A window appears, giving you several options as to size and quality. Make your choice and click on the "Export" button in the lower right corner. This brings another window wherein you can decide where to place the photo— a folder (you have the opt. to create a new one) or, perhaps your desktop. Now you know where to find the photo when FaceBook asks you to upload it. It should by default be a jpg file. I hope this helps. -
When I approached Art about having a fund-raiser at the Gate, he did not hesitate to approve. I foolishly did not keep count of tickets, never expecting that kind of turnout, so there were masses of people outside, holding tickets but unable to get in. Art solved the problem by calling in extra personnel and opening up the Top of the Gate venue. The artists (and there were many of them) each did two performances, appearing in both places. Monk headed straight for the kitchen, where he went to sleep, but when Jules gave him his cue, he went to work. It was a great evening, we were a radio station, we should have been recording! BTW More recently, I had many conversations with Art when there were plans for a Jazz Museum in Harlem. He had used his contacts in Washington to get influential people involved and he was dismayed when the people hired to set it up turned out to be unbelievably incompetent.
