Just checked this out - wonderful stuff!!! It is nice to see all the guys in pretty good shape (guess this was ~ 20 years ago). Sure, there are plenty of guys who should have been there, but no complaints on the basic cast. I saw very few of these guys live (only McCoy, Blakey and Woody Shaw), so this is a huge treat. Perhaps hard to separate the "historical quotient" from the "getting off" factor , but this is a "must have" for all BN fans. Eric

Collectors' Choice has just reissued ANOTHER Lets Active lp, "Big Plans for Everybody". Actually, it has an 11/11 street date but you can buy it directly from them now. They also have "Every Dog" coming out at the same time, although I don't enjoy that one nearly as much as the first three. Eric

Two events - took a "jazz appreciation" class in college for the "easy A" - the professor (Dick Wright) was such a nice guy and so eanest, it was hard not to at least listen. I also had a high school football buddy who was exposed to jazz at his college and sent me a bunch of cassettes (Miles, Wes, Tyner, Vitous). The combination of these two events hooked me. So, walking into my room in college, you were either going to hear London Calling or Kind of Blue Eric

All the time. It is fun to "re-visit" a while later and see if the music is still meaningful. For me, every time I come back to Trane, Bird or Wes, it is like coming home for Christmas, except there are even more presents under the tree. But there have been others - that have just left me cold. Hard to cite a specific example though ... they are in the minority ... Eric

Well put guys. I like AAJ, but I really like Organissimo. More of a sense of community, I guess. Never mean-spirited, but there is a lot of good natured play back and forth. I think we respect each other and the fact that we are doing this on someone else's nickel helps keep us in line Eric

Andrew!!! I cannot understand why this has *never* come out on CD (save for the Mosaic). I find it to be very accessable and is my favorite AH after Black Fire (and some days I like it better). Eric

I like all of the Orrin Evans CDs. He plays piano and writes interesting tunes. He comes from a hard bop backbround, but moves "out" pretty nicely. He also seems to pull together good bands, but has some trio dates too. Some of the Criss Cross stuff has a sameness or blandness for me, but just some. Maybe the idea is to stick to certain artists? I would also second (third?) all the praise for Walt Weiskopf. I *really* like the JD Allen CD that has Evans and Pelt. It has an edge that makes it very tasty. The Don Braden dates are very good - I would just go with the sidemen you like. I have tended not to like their organ dates and Peter Bernstein is a guitarist that sorta bores me, although he gets a lot of love. They have been around for 20 years or so and there are a lot of one-off gems in the catalog. It seems that early on they went with more established artists and some of that stuff is wonderful. Eric

I have really been on the fence on this one (the real album, not the farting one). I love electric Miles and I love McLaughlin on the Cellar Door stuff. But I have seen the word "boring" associated with the new set often enough that it is cause for pause. Now that this thing has been out a few weeks (an eternity in our little world), does anyone have any second takes on the set? Eric

BTW, the Paul Tingen book is a MUST for anyone who enjoys electric Miles. I think my obsession with it was one of the 250 or so thing that lead to my divorce B) Eric

Uhm ... not to mute anyone's enthusiasm, but I think Alan has listed this as "Spring 2004" for a looooooooooooooooooong time, so I am not sure this is news. Hopefully I am wrong. I love this album. Snagged the SACD version too, which sounds amazing. I emailed Paul Tingen a few months ago to see if he had any insight on the "real" release date and he did not. As Rooster mentions, tapes of this thing are out there, so it would seem this will ultimately be a reality. I love electric Miles and aside from the Pete Cosey band, this is the outfit that does it for me. I can't wait to grab this! Eric

I have that Thorns CD and frankly, it is a snooze. It does not sound like a Sweet record - kind of reminds me of Wilson Phillips. Very lightweight, at least for my tastes. Is Ming Tea the group that played "Daddy Wasn't There" in Goldmember?? Eric

Thanks Ghost - I will look for that book and boot. I can definitely hear the late Trane influence. And ... did I read in the MM liners that Verlaine wanted RVG - yes that RVG - to be his engineer??? I did snag the Rhino Hommade CD. I also picked up the Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine solo CDs that Collectors Choice put out not too long ago. I knew Lloyd from a prior Matthew Sweet obsession and really like his solo CD. This is very good and unique stuff. I actually think I had the MM lp in college but never took the time to really get into it and sold it back. Musically, these guys hardly sound like punks, but not sure where else I would place them, although it hardly matters ... Eric
