Let's Take A Walk Inside Dusty Groove, Shall We?

IIRC, it is a term of endearment earned by the fact that DG has been one of the few online sellers where jazz fans like us can find import titles, cut-outs, or new releases at fairly reasonable prices with good customer service. Hence, "Dusty has a bunch of the new CDs I want. There goes my paycheck, the bastards." Very much a term of endearment. It is also appropriate the include the "TM" symbol as used in this thread: -

With Chicago only being a short flight from KC, I've the pleasure of stopping by a number of times over the years. It is on the smallish side, but not small. Certainly it would be dwarfed by say Amoeba in SF. Well-organized and of course it is a blast to see all the stuff they carry on their web site in person. -
Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
Eric replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
Thinking about this I am trying to carefully draw the distinction between "overrated" and "I don't like". For example, I don't like "Am I Blue" but it is hardly highly rated. Same for the "Night of the Cookers" records. One that seems to fit the bill is "Blues Walk" by Lou Donaldson. I just don't get it - don't care for the tunes, his tone or the phrasing. I do like a couple LD records, but not the one that generally seems to be regarded as his best. Another is "Moanin'". Nice record, no doubt - but among the last Blakey's I reach for. "Una Mas" - seems to be highly rated. Same as the Blakey, it is fine, but my least-played of the Dorham/Henderson lps. "Point of Departure" by Andrew Hill. Pretty clearly regarded as his classic, but give me "Black Fire" or any one of a number of the previously unreleased sessions. This is actually a little difficult and not much fun. Would much rather discuss the underrated ones -
Young Guns - Gene Ludwig, Pat Martino, Randy Gelispie

Listened to a couple clips a few days ago, they are indeed smokin'! This was in my basket at DG, so Jim thanks for the heads up - sent an email to Pattye. -
It appears that Travis Klein maintains the Pittsburgh Music Hall Of Fame page on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Pittsburgh-Music-Hall-of-Fame/152551968154498 Last summer he made a post similar to the one made above. I "commented" on the post, asking who the organist was - Big John or Larry Young. Hell, maybe it was Gene Ludwig, who was once recorded by Klein ("The Educated Sound of Gene Ludwig" on Travis Records from 1965).

True. That said, I especially wouldn't want to be without any of the McLean titles. Jackie's work for Prestige/New Jazz unfairly gets overlooked in relation to his output for Blue Note. Makin' The Changes is a particular favorite. Did anyone else here notice that there's a new UCCO (prefix) reissue line coming out in May? They're not SHM-CDs, however. Later Prestige titles, including Bobby Timmons' session with Wayne Shorter. Looks like 65 titles, stumbled on to this listing: http://tower.jp/article/feature_item/2014/02/28/0110#div_item_contents

Complete Bud Powell Blue Note/Roost and Verve
Eric replied to BeBop's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Were the Parker & Gillespie tracks on the ESP albums? I thought they were trio only. Having a listen on my favorite "preview" site (Spotify). Listening on a lousy computer speaker, but they do sound better than the older CDs. Kind of a no-brainer for $19.99 off the ESP site. Edit: Pulled the trigger - note that you receive downloadable files upon online purchase - WAV files, no less. -
I have been eyeing some of these for a while ... does anyone have any favorites?

Import Cds - the online retailer - what do you guys think of them?

Same here -
I appreciate all the discussion re: sound quality and the ones I have picked up do sound great. I am personally grooving on the fact that many of the titles were not previously and/or easily available on CD. I've been playing the hell out of On Broadway by Reuben Wilson - it smokes!

FS: Bitches Brew 40th Anniversary Edition
Eric replied to skeith's topic in Offering and Looking For...
does anyone? seriously, that is one of my all-time favorite box sets ... just so cool! -
I just picked up five of the January issues from Dusty Groove: Sam Rivers - A New Conception Larry Young = Of Love And Peace John Patton - That Certain Feeling Don Cherry - Where Is Brooklyn? Reuben Wilson - On Broadway All of them have a paragraph of notes from Cuscuna and most have vintage photos under the back tray, No info (in English anyway) on remastering. The OBI also included this link which has details on the issues in the series. Nothing that hasn't already been mentioned in this thread: http://um-llc.jp/masterworks/ Nice series. They sound very nice and there are a number of titles never issued on CD (others only by Mosaic).

you bet!! received an email promoting this film a few days ago http://us4.campaign-archive1.com/?u=a7086e7d975e1148d1dd0a557&id=a5b1d4cd3f&e=5ec531ed07 I did as well, but did not open the email in time and missed the window to watch the preview. Not really sure the point of that ...

From the Eastwind web site: "A discovery of the century! Never-before-released live recording by Bud Powell from Birdland in 1957! Very good sound quality engineered by the Bell Sound Systems! Individually numbered limited edition - only 999 copies pressed! This live recording by Bud Powell with his quintet featuring Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor was not only never released before, but never even mentioned in any discography or documents, thus completely unknown to us. Powell was in a so-called "stable" period in October 1957, and with the stellar, younger musicians, performed superbly. Everyone gets to stretch as each of the four tunes here lasts at least nine minutes and as long as 15 minutes. In addition to the great performance and the rare combination of musicians, the quality of the recorded sound, although monaural, is pretty good. According to Symphony Sid, who emceed the concert, this session was recorded by the Bell Sound Systems and intended to be released by the Roulette label. Nobody knows why it did not happen and this tape was left undiscovered for 56 years. In addition, as far as we know, this release contains the only "Lover Man" ever recorded by Powell. This is undoubtedly the most highly anticipated historical release of the year! A must-have item for all jazz enthusiasts! Recorded live at Birdland, New York City, in October 1957. Mono."
