Japan’s Vinyl Junkies Ecstatic Over ‘New Originals’
Eric replied to mjzee's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Absolutely, thanks for providing the link. I really don't think any of them (or ... us ) believe they are procuring a true original. It is however, a great way to possess something that very nearly replicates what you could never afford - and probably sounds great to boot. -
9 American beers whose sales have plummetted
Eric replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Heineken does = stale piss, horrible I started drinking local brews 10+ years ago and now all the big brewer stuff tastes skunky. Probably always did, there just weren't a bunch of alternatives back in the day. -
Sadly have to agree. As noted above, hopefully this will be a net plus to the overall Mosaic operation.

Not to hijack the thread, but would you mind to share more details about your Vortexbox setup? I went the Olive music server route a couple years ago and while their concept is cool, their execution (on both the hw and sw side) has been disappointing ...

Considering the fact that most of us here have large collections, I'm kind of amazed that nobody but me seems to be complaining about (or just disappointed with) the new search function. As I said, I used it frequently, and it was an amazing tool. The way it worked in 10.7, you could (for example) search for all the versions of "Walkin'" by Miles Davis, just by typing in "Miles walkin". Because I stored personnel data in the "comments" field, I could even add a third element in the search- the name of a sideman. You could just type in the text ("Miles walkin Cannonball"), and every track containing those words would come up in a list (not a dropdown menu), which you could scroll through, sort, edit, whatever. Just an amazing resource, not just to find something to listen to, but to look at things like a discographer, or to edit files as a group. They have almost completely taken that function away now. I miss cover flow like most people who are unhappy with 11, but that's a relatively minor beef for me, compared to the butchering of the search function. I've been on the Apple forums looking for info on downgrading/reverting back to 10.7, and there's one person who is telling me I can easily achieve it by using Time Machine (which we bought along with an external backup drive about two years ago). If anybody here has thoughts on this, I'm still seeking more opinions from anyone who is computer savvy. Not only did they kill the cover flow, but they also removed the cover art from the sidebar view. I know it is now at the top, albeit in a smaller version (which can be clicked on to produce the larger image). Makes you wonder why they decided to semi-crap on the whole cover art concept? Like Jim, I never really used cover flow other than for fun, but it was fun

Not trying to give you a hard time - what new features or changes do you like? I see some things as a little better and some a little worse, but nothing radical either way. The way they had hyped this, I was expecting much more.

Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting
Eric replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
of course one could go this route ... http://www.audiophileusa.com/item.cfm?record=97416 -
Agree, it is worth checking out. I paid the $1.99 to gain full access. Between this and their Spotify app, they are being as progressive as any record label out there. Not commenting on the economics of Spotify and/or this app. But in terms of a quality presentation, they are both very good and I would argue useful even for a "veteran" listener. And at the end of the day, what a great way to introduce the music to new listeners - I can't imagine what it would have been like to have these resources as I started listening to the music 30 years ago! One thing I am noticing on the iPad app is that they do not present the full catalogs for a particular artist. Also, some of the songs are "not available" but are "coming soon". I think the links to news articles are pretty cool, a bunch of them come from the NY Times from the last 20 years. Videos are cool too ... they are pulling in stuff from youtube and other sources. Watching Big John Patton play "Fungi Mama" ... pretty cool!

Thanks for the pics! What did they charge you for shipping? $7.95 according to my receipt from April.

Just received this in the mail yesterday. Very well done - it does have similarities with the Miles sets, but 1) pages are easier to turn and b) the font is large enough to actually read - largest I have ever seen on a box set (see below) I have not listened to the music yet, but am very pleased with the presentation.

Always liked this one ... and the Bud Powell that came out on the same series.

Interesting - he also talks about being booted off a Duke Pearson BN date in favor of Kenny Burrell. Ike Quebec gave him $10 and said "go home kid". So the Hank date came along ten years later ... All this is discussed starting around the 20 minute mark of the video Was Kenny Burrell on a Duke Pearson session? I wondered the same thing. Did a little searching ... only thing I could find was A New Perspective which of course is a Donald Byrd record. Interesting - he says '63, but the video "corrects" it to 1959, around the time of the Duke Pearson trio albums (upon which it does not appear that KB appears). He also mentions Israel Crosby and Arthur Edgehill on the date. A little Googling reveals nothing about these guys on record together Makes me kind of curious ... He goes on to say that Lion and Wolff were brothers - he didn't know why they had two last names and that they were from South Africa ...

I first bought the Silver Collection by Wes Montgomery and Blues and the Abstract Truth, just to have the CDs. A few weeks later I broke down and bought a Marantz player. This was 2006 or so. I can remember when Downbeat reviewed CDs separately from lps!

I believe there is a separate thread on these from late spring/early summer. Looking at the CD Japan web site, the are $12 each. I have ordered a few of these through CD Japan, one of which was "Money in the Pocket" by Joe Zawinul. Sound-wise, I was pretty impressed, seemed to be a nice upgrade to what I had previously thought was a crappy-sounding CD.

I suppose this says something about how exciting my Friday nights are, but I went to their web site to have a look. My initial reaction was something like "how incredibly lazy do you have to be to need one of these" until I read this bit of copy : "No need to worry about falling asleep with your record playing". It now makes perfect sense

Very cool!!

I have listened to Wadada on and off over the years. Always liked the tone of his trumpet and the overall vibe. I recently bought the Ten Freedom Summers set. With four CDs, there is certainly much to absorb. While I enjoy reading what others have to say about music, I don't like to write about it much myself. So no long write-up here, other than to say that I find this music to be outstanding!! I think this is one that I will continue to dig into and come back to over time. Words that come to mind to describe it: strong, sparse, beautiful, substantive, interesting. Parts of it actually remind me of one of my favorite Miles Davis lps, My Funny Valentine. Just very happy to have discovered this
