  1. I first bought the Silver Collection by Wes Montgomery and Blues and the Abstract Truth, just to have the CDs. A few weeks later I broke down and bought a Marantz player. This was 2006 or so. I can remember when Downbeat reviewed CDs separately from lps!
  2. I believe there is a separate thread on these from late spring/early summer. Looking at the CD Japan web site, the are $12 each. I have ordered a few of these through CD Japan, one of which was "Money in the Pocket" by Joe Zawinul. Sound-wise, I was pretty impressed, seemed to be a nice upgrade to what I had previously thought was a crappy-sounding CD.
  3. I suppose this says something about how exciting my Friday nights are, but I went to their web site to have a look. My initial reaction was something like "how incredibly lazy do you have to be to need one of these" until I read this bit of copy : "No need to worry about falling asleep with your record playing". It now makes perfect sense
  4. I have listened to Wadada on and off over the years. Always liked the tone of his trumpet and the overall vibe. I recently bought the Ten Freedom Summers set. With four CDs, there is certainly much to absorb. While I enjoy reading what others have to say about music, I don't like to write about it much myself. So no long write-up here, other than to say that I find this music to be outstanding!! I think this is one that I will continue to dig into and come back to over time. Words that come to mind to describe it: strong, sparse, beautiful, substantive, interesting. Parts of it actually remind me of one of my favorite Miles Davis lps, My Funny Valentine. Just very happy to have discovered this

Most, maybe all, of the Muse albums were released as Muse CDs before Muse folded up tent. Both the CDs and the LPs do turn up as cutouts on occasion and can be found. Correct you are - in fact I have a couple of them. I am clearly losing it ...

I enjoy all of his Muse lps. I think 32 Jazz (with Ricky's assistance IIRC) pulled together a best-of compilation, but nothing else on CD.
  7. I once made myself a "Joe Chambers as composer" playlist. In addition to the above, you have: Idle While and Dialogue (from Dialogue) Medina and Ungano (from Medina) Mirrors (from Freddie Hubbard's Breaking Point) Patterns and Irina (from Patterns) Oblique and Bi-Sectional (from Oblique) (oops, sorry, mentioned above too) Spiral (from duh ) Interesting that he had the title track from five Hutch lps. He also appears as a player on a number of classic mid-late 60s lps, including Mode for Joe, Tones for Joan's Bones, Mountain in the Clouds (Miroslav Vitous), Contours, Fancy Free and a bunch of the Andrew Hill and Wayne Shorter lps from this era.
  8. Thanks for reminder ... Components is one of his very best. Love side B!!
  9. Headline seems a little misleading when the donations "skyrocketed" to something like $78k. Sure, up from $3k the day before, but hardly a groundswell ...
  10. My cousin's wife died of tongue cancer 7-8 years ago. I had visited her several times as the end grew near. During the funeral, the pastor read one of her dying wishes which was to urge smokers to give it up. She left behind a six year old boy. I walked out of the church and basically quit cold turkey. I also kept telling myself that it was much less gruesome to die from weight issues than from cancer. No urge whatsoever to smoke today. It helps that in this day in age, about the only place you can smoke is in your car or back yard.

There are several Amazon Marketplace sellers who are simply OUT OF THEIR MINDS! There's one who not only overprices items, but fairly consistently sells their used copies for more than they sell their new copies. Looks like there have been some re-pressings, Dusty Groove has this back in stock.
  12. Chewy check this at 5: http://http://londonjazzcollector.wordpress.com/record-labels-guide/4-prestige/ Link did not work for me. I have this on a reissue lp from sometime in the last five years or so. Unfortunately I could not find it to read the notes. My impression is that it was his date. Edit: the link works if you just remove the duplicate http://
  13. Thanks for the heads up. They have some great Blakey from that era. Was listening to the '73 Central Park show ... Eddie Henderson goes crazy on Plexus!
  14. So here we are ... Edit: Never noticed before, but at the bottom is a note which indicates the sketches are by Steve Roberts and the proud owner was one James W. Cole ... the name John C. Manigan is also stamped on there. Some of the commentary includes "Every note on this record is magnificent!!" and "This is a perfect record. There is not one average note anywhere - J.W.C." and my favorite "I can't believe how good this record is. There is not one moment of boredom or any lapse in creativity on either side. All the compositions are a gas. AAAAAGH"
  15. link which popped up when I scanned the UPC on the mini-OBI strip ... http://www.emimusic.jp/jazz/bnlt/index_j.htm I do believe several of these have never been available as a single CD (i.e. the only way to procure them was through a Mosaic set) - a couple of the Turrentines come to mind - Ain't No Way and Mr. Natural.
  16. I bought a used copy of Joe Henderson's "Our Thing" through the mail maybe 30 years ago. On the back are a couple of rather amazing sketches of Andrew Hill and Kenny Dorham, along with some exuberant (and amusing) commentary on some of the tracks. Never seen anything like it. It is filed away somewhere (not my "play" copy), but I will find it and post a photo.
  17. I bought and received Sonic Boom from Dusty Groove. Won't have a chance to listen for a couple days, but on the back it does say "newly mastered in 2012 by Yoshio Okazaki".
  18. 9/11 (by a wide margin) and while it was not a specific "one day" event, the fall of the Berlin Wall.
  19. Looks like there is also a Chet Baker box than never came out the US. They also show an 11-CD version of the Dolphy set, versus nine in the domestic version. Wonder what makes up the other two CDs, unless there is a typo.
  20. I also enjoy the Sipiagin and Adam Rogers titles.
  21. don't they come from this book? http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Note-Photography-Francis-Wolff/dp/0789304937/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343158970&sr=1-2-fkmr1&keywords=blue+note+color+wolff
  22. If they wanted to limit the offer to previous customers there are any number of ways they could do this without using regular old coupon codes. They could simply ask you to provide some info on the receipt from your last order. I fail to see why the consumer is obligated to go along with the marketing framing (including restricting information to various channels) of businesses that offer deals. It's an exceptionally strange and customer-hostile view of business ethics. If Mosaic had titled the email "SUPER-SEEKRIT COUPON - DO NOT SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH THE RABBLE OR YOUR OWN COUPON IS INVALID" then that would be one thing.
  23. Wild, I happened to be listening to the boot when up popped this thread. Sound varies between discs: Disc 1, not so bad, Disc 2 rather muffled at times. Fun music throughout.
