Herbie Hancock Complete Columbia Box
Eric replied to djcavanagh's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
With the exception of one single and two mono versions, appears to be the same as this: http://www.amazon.com/Mwandishi-Complete-Warner-Bros-Recordings/dp/B001A3GSMA/ref=sr_1_4?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1404754858&sr=1-4&keywords=herbie+hancock+warners Pass ... -

BTW, this may be posted above, but the basis for the series, per the Universal site. Thirty titles in total, all released 6/25/14. I did not attempt to improve upon the Google translation, dorks like us know exactly what they are talking about Part1 The Original Unreleased from 1500 & 4000 Series at the time of release No. 1500, series of 4000, while numbers are determined, work that has not been released. Part2 GXF Series by KING Records the world's first appearance as a series (aka GXF series), King records 1979-80 year had the right to release Blue Note in Japan, released the unreleased album series. Original of these has become a collector's item of the coveted current. I reproduce the original jacket popular board of the series this time. Part3 EMI-Blue Note Discoveries 1984年, EMI to determine the revival of the Blue Note in earnest. Even after becoming the CD era, precious unreleased take some have seen the light of day.

Bertrand, as you seem to have an insight - any update on the "Back to the Tracks" Bonus titles ? From the Universal site in Japan: 06. Meronezu Dance (seems to be a bad translation, not sure what the title is) 07. Medina http://www.universal-music.co.jp/p/UCCQ-5002?s=119022 That's very interesting. There are seven unissued tracks from the same sessions - could have been another album! Tommy Turrentine (tp-1) George Braith (sop, stritch) Big John Patton (org) Grant Green (g) Ben Dixon (d) Englewood Cliffs, N.J., July 11, 1963 tk 3 Blue John Blue Note BST84143 tk 14 Nicety (1) - tk 15 Jean de Fleur (1) (unissued) tk 27 Extension (1) - tk 32 I need you so (gb out) - George Braith (sop) Big John Patton (org) Grant Green (g) Ben Dixon (d) Englewood Cliffs, N.J., August 2, 1963 tk 16 Hot sauce Blue Note BST84143 tk 20 Bermuda Clay house - tk 26 Chunky cheeks (unissued) tk 34 Dem dirty blues Blue Note BST84143 tk 36 Country girl - tk 45 untitled Patton tune (unissued) tk 49 Davene - tk 62 Kinda slick - Are the 5 bonus tracks being appended to the Blue John CD known yet? From the Universal site in japan: 07. Jean de Fleur 08. Chunky Cheeks 09. I Need You So 10. Kinda Slick 11. Untitled Patton Tune http://www.universal-music.co.jp/p/UCCQ-5008?s=119022

Wow, has it been that long? Aside from a couple of the earlier records, this music was previously unknown to me. With the exception of the Lighthouse material (which I simply have not listened to), I have really come to enjoy the set. Tunes are interesting and great playing all over the place. Classic Mosaic "discovery" for me.

Skagly has been discussed elsewhere, but this set has really grown on me over the years. I enjoy it more than Super Blue, the so-called "jazziest" of his Columbia dates. Sweet compilation.

We have nothing in Kansas City. Zip. It is depressing.

Cool! The Blasters were in KC last Friday - was out of town and missed it. Heard it was a great show.

100 plastic outer-sleeve/jackets for LPs
Eric replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Sounds like you have under-ordered the number of records, not sleeves -
Seems there was another one on MPS, Rollin' from about that time? Seems it was reissued a few years back, but maybe I am off on the timing of the music. Edit: Indeed I was incorrect - early 80s issue. Of the Atlantics, my favorite is High Blues Pressure. Not saying this is good or bad - just descriptive - but still of a sound of the BN albums. Backlash more of the same, albeit a little soul-jazzier.

Is Freddie Hubbard's Columbia Material Available Anywhere?
Eric replied to DMP's topic in Discography
I bought both High Energy and Skagly and would give Skagly the slight edge. Neither are perfect, but the overall group sound is a little cluttered or unpleasantly dense on High Energy. Skagly reminds me somewhat of the stuff Woody Shaw was putting out on Columbia at the same time - and is closer to Super Blue than High Energy is. So wow - five years later - and I have been listening to Skagly on a semi-regular basis. Hard bop for the seventies? Fusion with bite? Either way, it has become one of my favorite FH albums. -
I never really stopped listening to vinyl, but when I replaced my "college" Dual almost 20 years ago I went Rega. Still have that one (their entry level at the time) and have since bought another. I was stunned with how good the first one sounded and still am. The dudes know what they are doing! I would suggest that when the time comes you buy it through a local dealer. It is nice to have someone locally who can tweak it for you. I don't think Bezos makes house calls

Tough crowd . I did find it interesting that he favorably contrasted the Universal archive department with the EMI archive department. So rumors that Universal is simply going to burn the master tapes are apparently false. I know, I know, he was probably just kissing ass to his new bosses ... The thing that also struck me is that in 2014, it is possible for a music exec to have passion for multiple music genres without being a fraud. Reminded me of myself (well probably many/most of us) in that regard, simultaneously discovered jazz and punk rock in the early 80s and love them equally today (along with country, blues and of course classic rock - oh shit, that probably wrecked my jazz cred ).

Two separate vinyl sessions (EPs) will be issued by Resonance Records in connection with Record Store Day on April 19th. One contains the five(!) studio tracks recorded in 1955 by Epic. Only one of these has been issued on an old Columbia compilation. http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/6799 The second release contains six live tracks recorded at the Turf Bar in 1956: http://www.vvinyl.com/v/wes-montgomery-live-at-the-turf-club-whiskey/4825 It looks like all this material (and maybe (likely?) more) will be issued later this year by Resonance on 2 CD/3 LP sets.

Andrew Hill, Point of Departure - 50 years ago ago
Eric replied to Guy Berger's topic in Recommendations
Pretty much the same for me. I've never truly connected with POD, but very much so with "Black Fire" (I like "Dance with Death" for late 60's Hill). Same for me. -
Agree on both points, love his Muse records!
