  1. this data seems a little goofy so from 2005 to 2012, the 50-59 group went from $34 billion to $106 billion??
  2. Hmm, have not noticed that. Are you using iTunes Match or streaming from your computer? I'm using iTunes from my computer (not iTunes Match), with the "2 Speakers" option in iTunes. But there are so many other programs that communicate with the cloud (iCal, etc). It's just a guess on my part; I can't say definitively that's what's causing it. Interestingly, I don't hear breaks in the music from the remote speakers. Hmm, maybe it is your network.

  4. Those actually are two different concerts. The 1960 concert (December 6) has Bobby Timmons on piano, as opposed to Walter Davis Jr. who was filling in for the '59 tour. The 1959 concert was from November 23. They played Lester Left Town and Night in Tunisia at both concerts. Otherwise, the songs were different. Interesting - I had always made the same assumption! But you can tell by looking at the photos ...
  5. With the V-DAC, some reviewers suggest replacing the power supply. Did you do that, or is the one that came with the unit OK? I know that was the recommendation with the original V-DAC, but I did not. Perhaps I am dreaming, but I thought that was an improvement made with the V-DAC II. But I could be thinking of some other component ...
  6. Try www.computeraudiophile.com I have these two: http://www.stereophile.com/content/rega-dac-da-processor http://www.amazon.com/Musical-Fidelity-V-DAC-II-Asynchronous/dp/B005K8CSZ2 The V-DAC is a reasonable place to start!
  7. I'd like to beam an audio signal throughout my house, sort of my own radio station. I'm thinking of using an old Mac with an EHD holding my music library. iTunes on the Mac would beam the music signal. I could then hopefully use Airport Expresses and/or Apple TVs connected to stereos in different rooms. Is this doable? Would each receptor (Airport Express/Apple TV) need some sort of video screen? Will iTunes beam to multiple receptors (Airport Express/Apple TV), or will I need a software program like AirFoil? Ideally, I could use wi-fi iPods to receive the music signal, but I don't know if that's possible. Anyone have thoughts? Fortunately it is much simpler than that! old Mac + EHD, running iTunes, will work just fine as a digital source purchase an Airport Express (AEX) for each room that you want to play music in iTunes has a little piece of software that recognizes each AEX and so you will be able to beam to the AEX of your choice (or multiple AEXs simultaneously) the AEX then needs to be connected to a power source which is of course connected to your speakers as Deuterium mentions above, you can bypass the DAC in the AEX by using a digital cable to connect the AEX to a separate DAC, which then connects to the power source this step is optional I go this route for my two "serious" listening rooms but go straight from the AEX to the power source in my daughter's bedroom* if you have one, you can then use your iPod, iPad or iPhone as a remote there are plenty of audiophile enhancements that can be made (which I have not), but this will get you up and running and enjoying music happy to explain further if you like * in her room I have bypassed the separate power source as the AEX is connected to these powered speakers: http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Audioengine-2 Thanks! This is really helpful. Will an Apple TV work instead of an AEX? An Apple TV is the same price as an AEX, so getting some of those may offer more possibilities in the long run. yes, it will - forgot to mention above - have this set-up in my basement
  8. that is my understanding, I went this route a couple years before I went Mac

  10. I'm considering purchasing an automated ripping station for my 4,000+ cd collection. Most products are for professional use and cost well over $1000. The Acronova Nimbie NB11 pictured below is less than $500 and allows you to load up to 100 discs at a time. Most likely I would sell it on eBay or a computer/audio board after ripping my collection. Curious, did you ever make the plunge?

    Janelle Monáe

You know Tom I think you are correct. Being a boring middle-aged dude with three kids, I was not exactly keen on the scene, but allmusic suggests she left KC after high school, circa 2004. I first saw her maybe 3-4 years ago, and it was not part of some club stint, she just happened to be passing through town (as a back-up act and damn if I can recall who was the opener). Most recently I saw her at the Independence Event Center, opening for (ugh) Bruno Mars. Maybe 1/3 of the crowd were hardcore Monae fans, but quite a few of the teenyboppers who were there to see Mars seemed to take to her as well. Regardless, she put on one hell of a show, one of the four-five best I have ever seen.

I am a homer (she is from KC), but I have seen her several times and agree with you 100% ... just a sensational show and artist
  14. There is one but I don't have it. looks like there is the "on-demand" version available at amazon, but a number of used copies in the $15 range nice session, I played it to death when this came out in the mid-80s ...
  15. all previously issued new configuration http://store.acousticsounds.com/d/83392/Hank_Mobley_Quintet-The_Feelins_Good-45_RPM_Vinyl_Record
  16. No shortage of interesting titles. I have bought a few of these, but only spent time with one so far - Money In The Pocket by Joe Zawinul. The CD sounds much improved over prior versions and better than the lp IMHO. I think that is where the real promise of this series lies ... while I have a bunch of these titles, many of them are in crappy "Collectables-sonic" sound.
  17. I had not really paid attention until I saw a clip of the lead guy the other day. My thoughts exactly.
  18. The Electric Fetus was born in 1968 so it's a name that is reflective of its time. I've been to 2 of their 3 locations and they are pretty cool stores. I stopped by one of the Minneapolis stores maybe 15 years ago. Figured the name was a function of the era ... and yeah, cool place.
  19. I always found this one a bit curious: Electric Fetus http://www.electricfetus.com/Home
  20. I recall the series about that time period - I was in college. Also remember Downbeat as the source. Seems I owned one that contained some of the Paul Chambers Vee Jay material - the "Go" album. If memory serves, the titles were "Ease It" and "Awful Mean". Most likely my first exposure to Freddie Hubbard and Cannonball.
  21. I bought this from Dusty Groove along with a Mercury Cannonball Adderley CD. The Gryce CD obviously appears to be part of a Japanese Mercury series. The sound is not great - but not in the needle-drop sense but in the probably never sounded great sense. http://www.dustygroove.com/browse.php?kwfilter=Mercury+%28Japan%29&x=0&y=0&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1
  22. good read, I particularly enjoyed this passage: "Congratulations, your generation is the first generation in history to rebel by unsticking it to the man and instead sticking it to the weirdo freak musicians!"
  23. more here: http://resonancerecords.org/ I ordered and received directly from the site, have not had time to digest the music - notes are interesting and packaging is well done
  24. I know exactly one song of his, "Give Me Back My Wig" from an Alligator sampler. Raw and crazy fun
