  1. I think that whole crowd was probably mid 20s at best. Even so - it didn't strike me right. Not the way I remember those times. I have the third episode on the DVR and I'll give it a shot probably tonight or tomorrow.
  2. Have you read Tom Wolfe's piece about what hipsters were listening to in the pre-Beatles 1960s? Haven't read it but I'm curious. Whazzup?
  3. I'm attempting to get into it this season. Didn't see any of the first season so I'm trying to figure out who's who. I've been recording it to dvr and have only seen the first two episodes of season two. So many people think so highly of it I assume it's worth the effort. I agree with Larry's point about the smoking. Another (what I thought was unrealistic having been a teenager in the 60s) scene that was off the mark was a party scene where the records that were being played as party music were what I would say teenagers at that time were listening to - NOT adults. They would have had a shitload of Sinatra, Tony Bennett, etc. NOT motownish pop.
  4. the way I remember it is more like "First I play the melody, then I routne it - then I routine the routine." I can't remember where I read it either or IF I read it. It could have been in a broadcast interview.
  5. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LON !!
  6. Didn't expect it either....a shocker. RIP Hiram.
  7. Not much I can say hear that hasn't already been said. RIP Johnny.
  8. I'm with Jim Sangrey on this one. George Benson is one hell of a guitarist and singer. That he has had the good fortune to achieve commercial and financial success and knows how to maintain that success in no way compromises his "purer" (just for lack of a better word) efforts - past and present...AND, as Jim points out, his commercial efforts are well produced, musically sound and very sophisticated. You can even say slick - that's ok...I dig slick. I don't really understand how anyone can seriously believe he should have played his cards any other way.
  9. Happy Birthday !!
  10. My stab at it - feel free to add or subtract, but this pretty much works for me. A step up from a lounge band. A band with commercial appeal, strong front people capable of impressive (hopefully) singing, choreography, some comedy and anything else thrown in that would make it an attraction. Probably a good example of a 50s show band would be Louis Prima or the Treniers.. In the 60s and 70s maybe something like Wayne Cochran, the Checkmates or the Ohio Players. Just examples - there's lots more and most never achieved the exposure the ones I named did- but they worked and worked. Many on a regional basis and many were imitations of more successful stars or show bands.
  11. Dive in - the water's fine.
  12. It's as rhymes with Linus.
  13. Great drummer and nice guy who had played with "Gatortail Jackson", Etta James, Earle Warren's Apollo house band, etc. About a month ago. I know he was on dialysis so I'm assuming that his kidneys had something to do with it. I just heard the news from a band leader we both worked with.
  14. Haven't heard this, but that is pretty much how I feel about all the recordings by "Soul Survivors" that have come out over the past few years. They don't do it for me. One of the reasons is stilted rhythm sections for which I don't blame the singers or players - I blame the producers.
  15. imho, The two lps with Airto, Flora, Joe were great. After that ...well, it was chops city, if that's what you dug, but it didn't float my boat. I saw them live several times during both periods. I have mixed feelings about Chick. He's obviously a gifted player, but sometimes he plays so much bullshit, gets so "cute", plays so many games with the drummer (who has to react - after all, Chick is the leader) that I just get fed up.
  16. Shuffle play is the joint. I have my 30 gig iPod and my shuffle. I update about once every two weeks. So far I have about 15 gigs loaded on. Doesn't really matter with the shuffle - its still random after I update. I like to walk about an hour a day. I have listened to nothing but shuffle play when walking since November of 2006 when I first bought the 30 gig. I listen to cds mostly in the car - If i'm on along trip maybe I'll plug in the Ipod - always on shuffle. I love it! You also find out who you really dig.
  17. Bacardi and Tropicana on ice. Lots of ice. Great on a 95 degree summer day. Simple but effective.
  18. BTW...It's a badass album! :tup
  19. I looked in Bruyninckx discography - you know - the discography written by Superman's nemesis. It's listed as personel unknown. , but it did yield that Bullitt is apparently Wilton's nickname.
  20. In the early 80s Wild Bill was a guest on the Johnny Carson show. He said that he was playing a gig in the late 20s on Chicago's south side and when he arrived he saw a sign outside the venue. It said "Now Appearing - Wild Bill Davison - the white Louis Armstrong". Bill was embarresed by the sign but the nickname stuck. No doubt helped by his docile reputation and healthy liquid intake..
  21. I have it but have no idea how to post it. It's a picture of Wild Bill, Cutty Cutshall, and Bob Wilbur. I checked Google Images to no avail.
