Potential Undocumented Charlie Parker Recording
jcam_44 replied to jabird's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
If these were recorded in KC in January of 1947 I don't think it was Bird. He was in Los Angeles that whole time I'm pretty sure. -
Amoeba Music stores in financial difficulties

Yes it was but it is sad to never get to set foot in there again. That building was special. Apparently they had a lot of things planned to say goodbye to the location as well. Concerts and the such -

Electric Recording Co.: Artisanal Vinyl; Insane Prices

So he's doing it for the sheer love of it? I can appreciate that. Not sure how he is acquiring titles that have no tape degradation but that is the most impressive part to me. Haha. I think most people would be surprised how well albums sounded on a good setup. The best part of the article was “Audiophiles listen with their ears, not with their hearts,” Hutchison said. He added: “That’s not our game, really.” I would love to hear him expound on this. -

COVID-19 2.0: No Politics edition

But then you're not throwing a rock from one side to the other. You've changed you goal to only reach the other side. So we have gone from research and development on alternate energy sources to changing our consumption habits. If we continuously change the goal we will continuous be chasing something different. My only point is, its much easier to want renewable energy than actually practical give energy needs. Solar and wind are cheaper to build and maintain, but are as useful when their energy source is not predictable. Most if not all major utilities are utilizing them in some capacity and are attempting to increase as they can. -

That’s a real piss poor argument. By your logic massive resources should be used towards all endeavors no matter their feasibility. If I keep trying to throw rocks over the Atlantic Ocean every day maybe one day my arm will become strong enough to do it. -

As someone who works in the utility industry and has a very solid foundation in solar, I don't believe the solar would have evolved any quicker, and the problem now is panels installed 20 years ago are so inefficient they need replaced but what do you do with old panels? Dump 'em? There is very limited recycling of panels now and they aren't able, at least to my knowledge, extract the most valuable components at this time. Wind generation destroys the ground below the turbine, hence why they are always in the desert and how would you store energy for future use when the sun ain't out or the wind ain't blowing? Batteries? That's a whole issue of itself. Its so easy to say lets be green when you don't have to figure out how to do it. -
Not sure if anyone purchases from bandcamp, but they are waiving their fees on Friday so artists can make more money. I missed this the last time they did it. There are a few I've been holding out for so I am going to purchase them Friday. I've added the email below. Greetings, A few Fridays ago, we waived our revenue share to help musicians impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Bandcamp community (very possibly including you!) went above and beyond, paying $4.3 million to artists and labels in just 24 hours. It was an inspiring day, and we heard many requests to do it again, so we’re going to do exactly that. This Friday, May 1, we’re once again waiving our revenue share for all sales on Bandcamp, from midnight to midnight PDT. If you’re fortunate enough to be in a position to spare some funds, please join us in providing some much-needed support to the many amazing artists on Bandcamp. Details are here, and please help us spread the word!

I've been doing my running at around 5 am, to avoid others. Its basically when I ran before all this because of work but I've decided to maintain it since no one is out. But yesterday I had placed an online order from a record shop trying to do my part in supporting only to go to pick it up and find they were just open for business. No mask, there was one customer in there that I saw. I was asked if I wanted to look around and honestly the proposition did not appeal to me and i grabbed my order and left. I'm probably done shopping there due to this experience. -
Here is a fun one. Not sure how it took 5 days to go from Jacksonville to San Francisco...or why it went there, but then took 10 days to go from San Francisco to LA. Amoeba Music stores in financial difficulties
jcam_44 replied to duaneiac's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
A couple things I know about Amoeba, at least here in SoCal. Their employees really love the owners, and what they do. They also employ or used to employ a lot of artists. I have a friend who plays bass for a few bands and they would really worked with his schedule when he worked there. Pretty sure he still goes to their christmas party and he hasn't worked there in a few years. I also contend it's not the same place it used to be, but they do have a ton more competition than they used to. And the Hollywood location is packed on the weekends, it's actually impressive they have so much stock with so many people buying stuff. I've been there when every register is open and there is still a line. That's 10-12 registers open still backed up. The dispensary thing makes sense to me if you can make it a profitable component of your store. Probably make more on weed than on their giant classical section (the rumor was it was going there in the old location). My old buddy Lee at New Life Records in Nashville told me back in 2006 or so the only thing keeping him afloat was his pipes and bongs he sold. He just loved music and wanted to keep the shop. The new location i think is going to be a lot smaller. And they aren't constructing the building, I'm pretty sure they are leasing (i don't think they bought it) a location but are trying to get the store set up the way they want. It's a store front in a building with other retail space. The old spot was only them. Honestly the new location is kinda shitty parking wise based on my limited time there. If you knew about the two hour validation at the old spot across the street it made it super easy, especially on the weekends. -

This is tough to hear but i, like you would expect many stores to be in trouble. If Amoeba only had enough savings to keep afloat for a month, I'm sure smaller outfits are in much dire straits. -

Reflections on music in the time of COVID
jcam_44 replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm listening more. Tuning into radio broadcasts on the weekend now which I never did before. Only consumed in my car. I've made a few purchases from Bandcamp. Finally got around to getting the Bob Reynolds tribute album to Hank Mobley and then he came out with a new one I pre-ordered and should get today. I wish I could support my local record shops but they make it too damn hard. I don't get why they aren't taking this time to go online, or creating newsletters. They barely have inventory on discogs. I tried paying cash and they balked at the idea, though this was the biggest shop in town and one of the few that sells new releases I was buying used items. I'm used to getting the cash "discount" at other spots. -

Ive got a bluetooth one...that i still use

Suff Daddy - Birdsongs

P. Original - Regeneration bought locally via discogs and picked up from their storefront via trunk delivery. Still trying to support my local shops when I can.

Agreed. Bandcamp is the new CDBaby and you are purchasing directly from the artist increasing their direct income. Better for everyone...as long as the artist is dedicated to sending out their product.

Suff Daddy - Pompette Pre-ordered this, got delayed, forgot about it and was surprised to receive it last weekend. Took a few spins but it is really growing on me.
