I saw her a couple years ago with James Moody, very nice!
  2. The Terra is on Michigan Avenue (follow the smell of Garrett's Carmelcorn ), a little north of Erie!
  3. I tend to like them (Bird, Chet Baker)!

  5. Cyrus Chestnut at the Jazz Showcase ($20.00), Jazz Record Mart, Dusty Groove, Art Museum, Man Ray exhibit at the Terra Museum, yummy food!!!! Mark
  6. I picked up this book a few month ago, very nice with lots of great photographs and details on many landmark recordings. I think I saw several used copies on abebooks.com but the book has not been out that long as is still in print. Mark
  7. Bol, I believe the guitarist was Mark Whitfield.. Mark
  8. I wouldn't necessarily assume that every jazz musician that is still playing at 80 is doing it solely for the money......well we all need money but I'm sure some of them continue to play because the love the music, love recording and love playing for people. I would have to say that many of these artists are not even selling out small clubs (although Jimmy still seems to pack them in) and should be greatful that people with so many options are spending their time and hard earned cash to see them. While I hope I'm not "forced" to work when I'm 80, a certain amount of respect should be expected....just my opinion. Mark
  9. UP.....free cd!!!!
  10. Sent you a PM on the Russell. Mark
  11. I've seen Jimmy a few times. At one show he did with Jimmy McGriff and Melvin Rhyne, he was actually pretty well behaved, but at another in St. Louis he was pretty pissed off all night. There were a small group of college aged kids sitting close to the stage in a pretty small club, he was on them much of the night; just being a smart ass. He asked if any of them played music and one replied that he played guitar, he then walked off the stage and said "listen to this guy, he'll teach you how to play" referring to his guitarist at the time. He left a stage a couple of times and let the band play for 15 minutes at time. When the show is only 60-90 minutes total, this is a long time. I tried to strike up a conversation after the show and while he did sign an original Francis Wolff photograph for me, he was in no mood to chat! ......and that growling he does throughout his tunes are annoying!!! That said, I would probably still go to see him as he is a living legend; but than again he didn't really tear into me! I think I remember someone on the BNBB said that Jimmy walked out of the club after a song or two because he thought the rent-an-organ sounded like shit. Mark
  12. Happy Birthday Johnnie
  13. Congratulation Dan, good move!
  14. I was in a used bookstore near my home this morning and spotted the following for sale: ~The Cover Art of Blue Note Volume 1 ($12.00) ~50 Years of Atlantic Records (very thick, lots of jazz, hardback, about $38.00) ~Black Beauty, White Heat (7 copies, $10.00) ~William Claxton, Jazz (softcover with Chet Baker on the cover) $12.00 ~Dennis Stock, Made in the USA (Has many nice b+w jazz photographs $15.00). ~Roy DeCarava, The sounds I saw (Hardback, $35.00) In the event anyone is interested or can't find them elsewhere, I'd be glad to pick one (or two) up for you. Mark
  15. Medjuck, The portfolio you are speaking of is a very nice collection of Herman's work and was quite pricing and limited in quantity. I believe that Quincy Jones literally bought about 1/3 of the available sets to give as gifts. I believe you can still get a print of Coltrane that you are referring to, through Mosaic; I bought one several years ago. I think each of the images they are selling are limited to 50 copies, but I don't believe any of them have actually sold that many. Mark
  16. That's right Brownie, I just ran into Duncan a few weeks ago at a record collector's convention. He only had 2 or 3 copies of his new book as it hadn't been released yet, but did sign one for me. The book was printed in Japan and looks very nice. I do some work for the Indy Jazz Fest and the American Pianist Association, Duncan helped me out with some vintage images, nice guy! Mark
  17. I think Zutty needs to pull those pants up a little higher .
  18. uuuuuuummmmmm.....gin and tonic . I have been interested in photography since I was a kid and have been doing it professionally for 28 years. I have been photographing jazz musicians for the past twelve or so. Since photography (and jazz...and baseball) is really my passion, I couldn't really pass on the Herman Leonard prints. I also have several by Francis Wolff, one by William Claxton and one by William Gottlieb (my first original jazz photograph, given to me by my girlfirend 11 years ago). The same print (Miles and Bird) sells for about 4 times what she paid for it. The postcard book is cool B) , I'm just into original photographs.
  19. The second book of Blue Note photographs has different photographs from the hardback (these are two different books, not an updated, revised book), many of the Wolff photographs are in color! I forgot about the Lee Friedlander book as well as the K. Abe book which are both very good; The Abe book is basically a "greatest hits" of jazz photographs and has photographs by many, many photographers, including K.Abe himself. I picked up the Friedlander book used in mint condition for about 35.00 (including shipping) a while back, this one won't dissapoint. The Herman Leonard book entitled "Jazz Memories" can be bought new for $125.00. The special copy Deus refers to above has a photograph with it, which is worth it if you can swing the cash. I have a set of 12 original Herman Leonard photographs that I purchased years ago and they are wonderful! Mark
  20. There are actually two books out there of Francis Wolff's photographs, the one mentioned earlier and a newer book that is soft cover only. Mark
  21. Deus, Hi, I have most of the books you mention being a photographer myself. Some additional books you may want to search out are: William Claxton's : "Jazz" (out of print but used copies are available for around $100. and up. This book was a limited release). William Claxton: "Young Chet" William Claxton: "Claxography: The Art of Photography" (also out of print but used books are available for 100.00 plus. Herman Leonard: "The Eye of Jazz" and "Jazz Memories" William Gottlieb: "The Golden Age of Jazz" William Minor/Bill Wishner: "Monterey Jazz Festival/40 legendary years". I have many more that I'll investigate when I get home, but that's what I can think of at this time. Mark
  22. I shop at Dusty Groove every few weeks (at the actual store). Their jazz selection is actually quite small compared with the other music in the store. I don't know if any other store that I shop at that has a smaller jazz section, but the selection is very, very good at decent prices.. Their jazz LP selection is bigger than the cd selection. I never go to Chicago without stopping there and the Jazz Record Mart! Mark
  23. Finished with the disc, who's next???? Send me a PM with your address and it's on the way! Mark
  24. Thanks guys, I have enough of the bonus points you get for purchases but I'm not sure if you can use them on the box sets. Usually they have the little disclaimer that says " box set are already at a reduced cost" but maybe I'll give it a try. Mark
