  1. The Cosmic Scene also has a nice "Early Autumn" too. Actually, the whole album is pretty great.
  2. If you get no other Woody, you've gotta get "Four Brothers," "Early Autumn," and "Blue Flame."
  3. I know what you mean. Right now my main reading material is the guide to Noir City 5---the liner notes and schedule for the fifth San Francisco Film Noir Festival.
  4. I agree.
  5. Got some more Sloan albums. Now I think I'm only missing one.
  6. Seriously, it makes me wish for the millionth time that he had lived longer. Not only would he have gotten rich off of the movies based on his work, but the academic pat-on-the-back of a LOA edition.
  7. Actually, some of Whiteman's stuff is better than you might think. It strikes me that the idea of this series is a very good one. 100 discs is a lot, though.
  8. Just got it yesterday. I love it! I give it 4 stars. I've always dug the Ellington small goups, though perhaps this should be called a "medium group" with 9 pieces. The term "nonet" doesn't get enough chance to be uttered. (BTW, I think a ten-piece band should be called a "dectet" not a "tentet.")
  9. Wow, Philip K. Dick has finally made it to the Library of America. On one hand, I'm pleased, on the other it may be a sign of the Apocalypse.
  10. If you don't have Song For My Father you should get it. Also, I think Stylings of Silver and Fingerpoppin' are two of his best albums.

I've been meaning to get that one.
  12. And all this time I thought it was an incest thing. That J.J. had a sexual fixation on his younger sister.
  13. I've been meaning to see this movie. Almost saw it last weekend but got too busy.
  14. That's about right. They were shutting down the Blue Note board when somebody mentioned Organissimo, or gave a link or something, and lo and behold (he's got me doing it) 90% of the BN posters were to be found posting away here. Haven't looked back since.
  15. One must note the capitol "D"----I two, have long had a weakness for Dick.
  16. "Slink"?
  17. Yes indeed. And Reece is great on Duke Jordan's Flight To Jordan.
  18. I know what you mean. I thank God I managed to snag the Dizzy Reece Select during the Tower close-out sale. It's a seriously good Select, in fact I'd go so far as to say "essential."
  19. I got the Wynonie Harris, and I like it, but no way is it complete. I thought it was all the recordings he made in the period covered. Isn't it? MG It's a heapin' helpin' of Harris, but it's missing some stuff.
  20. To expect completeness from Proper just ain't proper.
  21. Sea of Thunder: Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945, by Evan Thomas.
  22. "The ideal marriage is the one where the husband is smarter than the wife. The next is where the husband and wife have the same IQ. The third is where the wife's IQ is one point higher than the husband's. And the worst, which is ours, is where the wife has an IQ of 151 and the husband has an IQ of 129, which is a difference of..." "Twenty-two, Bob."
  23. I've got to admit: This guy does look tubby.
