It's their Superbowl, so things get out of hand with the entertainment. Speaking of the Superbowl, the most bizarre commercial was the "Chevy" ad with a hip hop version of Sweet Home Alabama. I think NASCAR and it's advertisers are trying a bit too hard to cross over. All in all a good clean race until the last 50 laps or so. Someone needs to tell Kyle Busch that you can't win the race if you don't finish the race.

I watched the race yesterday, actually I've been a race fan for 35 plus years. I watch all kinds of racing including F1,IRL, and NASCAR. I was hooked the first time I saw the INDY 500 on TV as a young kid, and have been watching and attending races ever since. It's all good in my book.

All other things being equal, it's been my experience that guitars with floating pickups tend to "feedback" more easily than guitars with top mounted pickups. You can definately work around this any number of ways, which I'm sure Herb can comment on since he obviously has had to deal with this situation. Not that you've asked, but I think floating pickups are overrated with respect to their ability to produce a more natural sound. Theoretically they better translate the tonal characteristics of the guitar body, since the top can vibrate more freely. IMO there are way too many other factors involved for it to be that simple, and more often than not, floating pickups don't add enough to justify all the other hassles. Of course this is just my cents, and your "mileage" could vary greatly depending on your specific playing situation. Just some things to consider.

What kind of guitar amp did Rudy Van Gelder have in the 60s?
Sundog replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
Tom, where did you get the info? I seem to recall a narrow panel tweed twin in one of the photos on "Up At Minton's". Hey Jim, a few more details below. Re: Amps on hand at Rudy's studio I've read this in a couple of different places over the years. The one publication I can positively attribute this to is "The Wes Montgomery Signature Licks Instructional Book" written by Wolf Marshall. I'll try to find the other source(s). Probably another guitar publication or Jazz Improv. I usually save any article having to do with Kenny, so I may still be able to get you some more information on this matter. Re: Equipment Kenny lent to Wes My bad, I meant to say Kenny lent Wes the equipment for The Wes Montgomery Trio Album. This is also in the introduction to the Wes Montgomery instructional book by Wolf Marshall. Wolf indicates that Kenny disclosed to him that it was in fact a Deluxe, and not a Twin, as was cited in previous accounts. I wish Kenny would publish his memoirs and set us all straight on this, and all matters having to do w/Kenny. It's long over due. -

Rudy had a Fender Deluxe permanently on hand in his studio during the time frame that your talking about. As an aside, Kenny lent Wes his own "Deluxe" and his L-7 for The incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montomery sessions (1959). So it appears that Kenny owned and played a Deluxe during the late 50's/early 60's. Probably not exclusively though, I believe that he also used a Fender Twin. Don't know about GG. -

FYI- Average street price appears to be $2,400. Nice guitar. Practically speaking, I'm not a fan of floating pickups, but still nice guitar.

Totally agree, it all comes down to personal taste/bias. I always assume this is understood when discussing these sorts of things, but maybe it's not.

The Outlaw can drive up to 4 speakers at once A,B, and A+B options. You can decouple the amp trom the preamp, so theoretically you could drive all those speakers at once if you added a multi channel amp. Not sure it that's what your looking to do? If your worried about satisfactorily driving higher end speakers it's not really an issue if they are reasonably efficient. I recently auditioned some B&W 803D's though this receiver using a Rega Apollo CD player as a source. I also auditioned the same 803D's using a Classe integrated amp and Ayre CD player. Sorry, don't remember the models numbers. The point being the second set up was considerably more expensive than the Outlaw/Apollo set up. I also, did different combinations mixing and matching all the above mentioned gear. My conclusion was the Outlaw was perfectly capable of driving those B&W's in an extremely pleasing manner at least to my ears. It's an extremely good receiver. Not sure if it will meet all your requirements speaker-wise, but it's a kick-ass little over achiever any you slice it.

To my ears Rotel's equipment has always been rather harsh and clinical sounding (of course that's just my opinion). I can see an argument being made for "clinical" depending on how you define it, but not with harsh. My system is very pleasing to my ears and those of even my most brutally honest guests - though that could have to do with its interactions with my speakers (B&W 704) and cd player (NAD C542). Never heard an Outlaw system, but I have heard good things. I just have a hard time buying without auditioning. Ok, let me restate... "clinical bordering on harsh" with certain other components in the signal path" FWIW, I bought mine on a leap of faith and 15 months later don't regret my decision. Outlaw's return policy is quite fair. I believe you have 30 days to audition. The only stipulation is you have to pay for the return freight (about $35 bucks on average in the continental US).
