While skimming this thread, trying to catch up on all things GD, I noticed a mention of a bonus disc of Pigpen rants, raves , and various other stage banter to be included in this release.
Fair enough. Maybe "First Session" is better characterized as a historically important release in Grant's catalog. I don't consider Peter Bernstein a one trick pony. He certainly has his share of detractors that think that very thing. The Grant influence is real, but I think it's more of a springboard than a final resting place.
..as always... (O.K. I'll stop)
Agree in principle, but don't think "all" are necessarily needed to form a balanced picture of Grant's body of work. Obviously, consider each opinion carefully.
Good excuse to post this from YouTube...
Bobo Stenson - piano
Palle Danielsson - bass
Massimo Urbani - alto saxophone
Enrico Rava - trumpet
Jon Christensen - drums
Still like Todd very much. I worked a summer job delivering pianos many years ago with a guy who was a Todd freak. That's all we would listen to as we made our rounds. I can still here his voice now, "...screw Eric Clapton. Todd is God!" A lot of great Todd/Utopia already mentioned. Initiation is a greatly overlooked album in my opinion.
P.S. A lot of good Todd on youtube.
I know he was not happy with Soul Manifesto (Blue Note). However, he did Soul Manifesto Live! (Savant) on which he had more creative control. I've read that "Live" was really more of what he had in mind all along. A darn good funk record in my opinion.
That's cool. They've modernized this reissue while retaining all the good things about the original. Tweaks include: Onboard overdrive and compression (The compression is quite nice and the overdrive is not half bad either). A "trans-impedance power attenuator" which allows you to take advantage of full tube overdrive at lower volume levels. Headphone jack. Speaker output jack. FX loop and four-button footswitch.
