I've been getting into the Nuggets box sets (1 & 2) and have found a lot of great music on it. I wanted to ask anyone if they had bands from the 60's in their area that they followed or had made records. I was born in 1969 so I obviously don't have any stories, but I grew up near (and did an internship for) WORC in Worcester, MA which claim to be the first station in North America to play The Beatles just before they came to America.

Miles..

If he's so great, why did they pull the plug on 2 future box sets with unreleased material? (Rhetorical, of course.) -
I just into them 6 months after Boon's death. Bought Double Nickels; their best one though I love everything before it also. After is good stuff too.

I just finished re-reading a book on this called Turn Me On Dead Man. It tracks down the rumor as far back as it can and talks about it's effect. It's a very fun book. I always loved this hoax.

Miles - On the Corner and Beyond
dave9199 replied to Aggie87's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
As far as the Miles reissues, we wouldn't be going through this if they put them out quicker. They should've been done years ago. -
I just listened to this very recently. I never gave it a lot of time for some reason so I can't comment except that there is another album of duets; the one with that piano player who's name I can't remember, Joachim? It was his last official album so far (1997!)

You beat me to it... didn't he make that one for his mum? Yes. Have you heard his follow up country album, Beaucoup Of Blues? Just as bad, but worse. I didn't own that one for too long as I never liked country music although I'll listen to Mike Nesmith's Monkees country songs any day, but never ventured into his solo stuff.

I really wish Ringo would release a jazz album. Haven't you ever heard his first solo album Sentimental Journey? It's awful, but has 2 big band arrangments on it that I really liked; Night & Day and Blue Turning Grey Over You.

New Sonic Youth Album - 'Rather Ripped' - June 13th
dave9199 replied to street singer's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have all of their regular albums and I would recommend: A Thousand Leaves (1998) Murray St (2002) Sonic Nurse (2004) After these Washing Machine (1995) has some really great songs and some clunkers depending on your taste. I could not get into Experimental for years and kept listening until I was old enough to enjoy it. It's so quirky and that's what I like about it now. Goodbye 20th Century has them "covering" avant garde composers. It's more fun to read about than to listen to, but listen to samples on the internet first before you buy it and you'll get the idea. Ones you probably wouldn't like: NYC Ghosts & Flowers (2000) Unfortunately this has one of the best Lee Ranaldo songs ever, the title track. This is another album I enjoy now, but disliked for years first. I'd say it's their worst one even over Experimental... -
New Sonic Youth Album - 'Rather Ripped' - June 13th
dave9199 replied to street singer's topic in Miscellaneous Music
This is the last album on their Geffen contract. I wonder what they're going to do. Anyone see Moore & Gordon & daughter Coco on The Gilmore Girls last week? The sound was dubbed in (What A Waste from the new album). Only about 10 or 20 seconds, nothing to write home about. -
This was my first Coltrane (and jazz album) that was bought (my wife gave it to me for Xmas 2001) for my jazz collection which started with this album & began a flurry of activity on Amazon & Half.com. A few thousand dollars & numerous box sets later, my collection has, thankfully, slowed down to a crawl. The first album I heard was A Love Supreme then my wife and I went to the Newport Jazz Festival in 2001. It brought back memories of listening to my dad's records and I hadn't explored jazz at all at that time. Cut to Xmas 2001 and listening to the first track, Mars, and chatting with my wife while listening, at about 3:40 in the song comes this flurry of notes like I've never heard before and I remember it stopping me in mid-sentence. That's when I knew I was about to spend a shitload of money very quickly...and I did. Though I don't listen to it too much, it is a favorite along with Ascension.

Which Coltrane are you enjoying right now?

I forgot, also New Thing At Newport. I pick A Love Supreme over Cresent. -

Just listened to Ascension last week. I love dissonance mixed with melody. -
Least favorite household task
dave9199 replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The main difference being having to clean up pee on the floor! It incorporates two other task so that the task of cleaning the litter boxes is magnified. I have to go shopping first to get a bag of litter, then change it, then take out the trash because the trash bag won't hold anymore after this. I still love 'em...except when they wake us up at 5:30 by running around and clawing the bottom of the bed which, when your ear is on the bed, is quite loud.......friggin' cats. -

My wife & I have 4 cats and the 2 youngest (from the same litter) at some point started to pee in the litterbox while standing on all fours. The litterboxes are not covered so every week I get to clean pee off of the floor. I'll be investing in covered boxes very soon... -
When my wife & I lived in Providence, RI, people would take a left turn at a red light if no one was coming the other way...IT'S NOT OPTIONAL!!!!

I didn't like the Debut box aside from the Toronto & Bohemia shows. The rest of the material was not my cup o' tea.

Listening to Punk can make you a terrorist suspect

Every once in a great while, record company meddling of an album makes an album just as good or better than the original. The US version of The Clash is still a great album. I'd stick with the UK because that's how it was intended. -

Amazon's used stuff can be in good condition and cheap. That's where I bought my copy a few years ago. -
Lost Cause (#21) I thought was one of his best aside from half of it being The Electric End. I can listen to stuff like that though the squealy feedback gets annoying. I usually pan it to one side and listen to the guitars. The other song are good though. If you ever get past the acappella albums, God's Speed.

cds desperately in need of remastering

The Evans/David box set unless it was done on the reissue. It's levels are surprisingly low. -
If it matters to anyone, I'm not going to review Jandek albums anymore. It's just too much and I don't like his recent stuff even though I've tried very hard. I don't think the same way I did when I found out about him (i.e. I'm happier overall). I will say that his live albums, Glasgow Sunday & Newcastle Sunday are very good, some of his best. I'll buy only the live albums from now on. His studio albums (post acappella) are absolute shit.
