  1. Starting to read this. Never read it before. 50 years late
  2. Finished this a few days ago. This is an unheralded book in his bibliography but surprised at how good it was. He has a lot to say about Germany and Britain of those times.
  3. Just read it. Good article but idea is absurd. PT Barnum lives.
  4. Bru-tal! I think it’s a great idea. Maybe the ultimate asterisk season but better than nothing. It could be a harbinger if things to come.
  5. According to some reports, baseball may realign for this year, as follows: MLB would re-align the league into three divisions with 10 teams in each division; teams would only play games within their division (at the regional hub they're assigned to); and the traditional American League/National League dynamic would be abolished, with teams being assigned to divisions based on geography. Possible divisions would look like this: East (Florida): Baltimore Orioles Boston Red Sox Miami Marlins New York Mets New York Yankees Philadelphia Phillies Pittsburgh Pirates Tampa Bay Rays Toronto Blue Jays Washington Nationals Central (Texas): Atlanta Braves Chicago Cubs Chicago White Sox Cincinnati Reds Cleveland Indians Detroit Tigers Kansas City Royals Milwaukee Brewers Minnesota Twins St. Louis Cardinals West (Arizona): Arizona Diamondbacks Colorado Rockies Houston Astros Los Angeles Angels Los Angeles Dodgers Oakland Athletics San Diego Padres San Francisco Giants Seattle Mariners Texas Rangers
  6. David, there’s an article in the New Yorker about it. Mike Davis in the Age of Catastrophe
  7. It also helps if you read French. As the weather gets warmer, people will drop their guard...at their peril.
  8. Thanks for the tip. Just ordered it.
  9. Just received Band of Gypsies today. In a word, superb.
  10. I think we all understand that not receiving some records or CDs are, in the scheme of things, minor irritants, especially in the middle of a pandemic where many are worrying about whether they’ll have a roof over their heads or a meal, and we’ll deal with it, just fine, thank you Capitan, but when lives are thrown upside down, it never hurts to get something off your chests. That’s what these places are for, right?
  11. Allegedly it has to do with his claim — disproven — that Amazon is getting a break from the USPS and he hates Amazon because Bezos owns the Washington Post.
  12. The USPS is a semi autonomous corporation so I don’t think he can order them to do that. However, he said he would veto any bill that contains a loan for them so someone needs to talk sense to him. Yeah, good luck with that.
  13. The women mentioned in the article are: Lovie Austin Lil Hardin Armstrong Valaida Snow Peggy Gilbert Una Mae Carlisle Ginger Smock Dorothy Donegan Jutta Hipp Clora Bryant Bertha Hope
  14. You open the slit so you can take the record out but leave the rest of the shrinkwrap on.
  15. You’re screwed: Jersey City, where media mail goes to die!
  16. It does seem to make a difference. I received a cd today I ordered less than a week ago that went first class. Sounds familiar. No change in my two missing packages
  17. If you want a good laugh, check this out:
  18. I had always kept the shrinkwrap on and a selling point with record sellers seems to be that the shrinkwrap is still on. However, I ran across the following thread on Hoffman suggesting that leaving them on can do damage to the jackets over time. It’s an interesting question. Since I already use an outer sleeve, shrinkwrap seems superfluous. On or Off?
  19. 10 Women in Jazz Who Never Got Their Due “While we’re often taught to think of jazz’s history as a cavalcade of great men and their bands, from its beginnings in the early 20th century women played a range of important roles, including onstage....Prevented from taking center stage, many female instrumentalists became composers, arrangers or artists’ managers...The piano and organ were considered more socially acceptable instruments for young women to play, and few serious fans of jazz would be unfamiliar with the names Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland, Hazel Scott, Shirley Scott or Alice Coltrane. But the ranks of female jazz genius run much deeper than that.”
  20. Always is.
  21. If I (we) knew of these problems, I’m sure we would have. Going forward, I will be asking for priority.
