  1. I don't want to be argumentative about this but a "rumor" is not strong evidence on which to convict a label. On the bebop set, I don't think they could have borrowed from remasterings since a lot of what was on there was not available previously. I would say the same for the Hawkins set, especially the Keynote material although it's conceivable they could have copied the cd versions of the Hawkins material. However, I would need a little more than a rumor to avoid them altogether in the future.
  2. Maybe some of us older posters should post pictures of what we looked like at 30 and now. I know in my case it wouldn't be that flattering (although I'm still about the same weight)
  3. Hans, Do you not like this particular set or Proper sets as a rule? I have found a few of them very useful such as the Bebop one and the Hawkins one.
  4. Hans, I'm not sure why you criticized the Proper (esp. without elaboration) but I would agree with what Garth said. About the Mosaic being too much of a good thing, that's what Mosaics are all about: here's all of a person's output and now listen to what you like.
  5. This may be slightly off topic, but are you familiar with the Dexter Ben Webster cd Tenor Titans on Storyville. You may want to get that one.
  6. This is one of my favorite Mosaics (which I bought when it first came out). I wasn't a huge Sonny fan when it first came out but I became a rabid one after that. Some people say a lot of it sounds the same. I say so what. It's such a huge beautiful set. I don't think there's a lot of overlap because of the copyright limitations but I don't have the Proper set because I have most of it. The Proper sound is very good generally although they don't have access to the masters whereas the Mosaic is from the masters, which Mosaic had a lot of trouble finding. I gave the Proper set to my music teacher for Christmas and he loves it. Sonny is one of his specialties and he can't say enough about the Proper set.
  7. Although Traditionalism Revisited is very good, don't overlook Kansas City Revisited. I liked that one even better, especially the combination of Brookmeyer, Al Cohn and Paul Quinichette.
  8. I don't want to get into the politics thing again because I've fought that battle and lost repeated times. What I wanted to say is that recently I heard from an old member of the BNBB who used to post there sporadically and I asked if he'd checked us out. He said he had but found this board "aggressive" and that he liked to post at AAJ. I didn't follow up but found it a little puzzling. Perhaps he was referring to the politics board, I don't know. I pass that one up so I can't offer any more. However, it left me a little unsettled that we might be viewed that way.
  9. For those of you still considering the TKM set, there are 80 left (oops, make that 79). I had to go up to Stamford today to see a doctor and I just couldn't resist going to Melrose Place. Unfortunately Michael wasn't there for me to continue my Three Sounds indoctrination and neither was Scott to find out what's in the pipeline. Yes, I'm an addict. I have no Mosaic control. There, I got it off my chest
  10. Like TJazz, I'm part of the cult also and I have to say that most of us probably need to start MA -- Mosaic Anonymous because we are addicted. God help us all!
  11. He's a muddah. Or maybe a faddah. Yes, but he's gone to Camp Hiawatha.
  12. Charlie Parker? Only in my dreams. I'm a relative newcomer and I don't get out that much (family reasons) but I have seen Lou Donaldson Kenny Barron Sonny Rollins Steve Turre Hoping to see Roy Haynes soon.
  13. I think it would be a mistake to say you'll buy no more Mosaics. But before we get there, it is true that there has been some criticism of the masterings. I think if you have the JRVGs or TOCJs of what's on a set, I wouldn't bother myself. That's why I didn't pick up the Reese. On the other hand let's take at the reason why you should buy Mosaic sets. Curtis Amy and the Charlie Ventura/Flip Phillips Mosaics are Exhibit A. Except for Katanga, everything on the Amy set has been unavailable on cd. Similar for the Ventura/Phillips set. Ditto for the Buddy DeFranco-Clark set, except for the Japanese reissues. I could be wrong but the Japanese Verves of the latter set haven't been out that long. That is Exhibit A. Mosaic has reissued material that either hasn't been available on cd or wasn't then available on cd (but is now). They perform an incredible service for us jazz fans. Where else could I be able to get the forthcoming Woody Herman set. Vinyl is possible but not as accessible as in one package. Before you discount them entirely, I suggest you buy a full Mosaic, not the Selects. There you will see all that they're worth. There is countless music that we wouldn't be able to enjoy but for them. Have you read how Michael discovered the Roulette masters for the Stitt material in some dusty areas in London. I could go on and on and others probably will but if you sell Mosaic short, you're making a mistake.
  14. I like 'em all although I don't have the Melle. I just picked up the Foster/Wallington and that's great. My favorites are the Maggies however.
  15. I hope this is all totally tongue in cheek because despite what I said I went back and listened to the Tristano (Atlantic 1224) and I was quite impressed by the music making, esp. Line up and Requiem. His playing (as is the whole band's) on the live set with Konitz is also quite fantastic. I'm not sure I can afford the set though; I just found out I have to replace my brakes. Ouch
  16. This would seem to be a discussion for those in the high stratosphere of posts. Not us little postees
  17. I got the following in mini lp at a local cd store.
  18. Good to hear about the Dex set. Any news on the Granz set?
  19. Thanks for the feedback. Since I have Tenors Head On, it prevented me from making a buying mistake.
  20. Is anybody familiar with this album that was issued on Pacific, with Art Pepper and Richie Kamuca?
  21. That's only less distracting if you're blind . Is her face covered to protect your reputation
  22. Amen to that. Who owns the right to Xanadu nowadays. Is it Classic Records. I know that as of '98 their Prevue Division had reissued some of the Xanadu material like Barry Harris Plays Tadd Dameron and the Tokyo concert.
  23. The Charles McPherson must be the "Beautiful" title issued on Xanadu. I recently picked this up and it's well worth getting. He plays all standards but who could knock the selections. Impressive lineup too: Duke Jordan, Sam Jones and Leroy Williams. I'd call it a must pickup. More of the Xandau material needs to be reissued. I'm particularly thinking of Dexter's True Blue and the Bebop series that I don't think has made it to cd, for the most part.
  24. You asked, we deliver: Meet the Mets, Meet the Mets, Step right up and greet the Mets, Bring your kiddies, bring your wife, Guaranteed to have the time of your life Because the Mets are really socking the ball Knocking those homers over the wall. East side, West side ev'rybody's coming down, to meet the M-E-T-S Mets from New York town. Oh the butcher and the baker and the people on the street Where do they go? To meet the Mets! Oh they're clapping and their shouting when they sit down in their seats Where do they go? To meet the Mets! Oh their hearts beat true for the Orange and Blue So grab your hat and come right down 'Cause we've got ourselves a ballclub, the Mets of New York Town! Give 'em a yell, give 'em a hand, And let them know your cheering in the stands! Come on and.. Meet the Mets! Meet the Mets! Our hats are tipped for that swingin' set! Near the airport, near the bay Jets and Boats are so near to Shea! 'Cos the Great World's Fair is right down the road! A World of Tomorrow just can't be ignored. Roos-e-velt Avenue, the L.I.E. Will take you to the place to be! In a jazzy fedora or a pillbox hat We'll welcome you, and that's where it's at. Come share a slice of the toast of the town, you won't be bored when cheering our heroes in '64.
  25. Unfortunately, Jim, that didn't work. When I save it to a folder and then go to open it opens in Microsoft Picture Manager as an "x". There's something that's not working here. Does anyone have any suggsestions. I never had this problem with the Photo editor on my old computer.
