Well, I guess you guys can count me as one of the ones who hasn't yet thanked Ray. So thank you for getting this to me and my apologies for not having thanked you sooner. I haven't contributed that much lately to BFTs and if you guys want to rake me over the coals, so be it. I frankly don't have as much time as I used to, what with working until 730 or so every night. I believe that when you sign up, you should thank the person but I don't where you all think you get the right to ban somebody. This is not your board but Jim's. This is not an exclusive little club but something we hope we get something from, even if we don't participate. I'm not in this for the thanks but to spread a little music around. When it gets to be my turn sometime next year, I'm not here looking for thanks but to give others an idea of what I like to listen to. So, please, let's get off the high horse and if you guys would like to toss me of this forum because my participation hasn't been too active lately, suit yourselves.

My only thought on this, as you correctly summarized it, is that this is not old folks music even though I'm 53. I've only been a fanatic for six years and what that means is that you need to attain a certain maturity to appreciate this music (even though you may not understand everything you're hearing). I don't think that I could have appreciated Elvin, Art, Bird, Coltrane, Duke, etc. at that age. Some, of course, can, but I think a lot can't. The closest that an inexperienced person could get to understanding jazz would be soul jazz because it's so guttural. If you can't appreciate Jimmy Smith or Groove Holmes, you ain't got no soul, whatever age you are. And at that age, I loved soul. At any rate, with maturity comes wisdom and I hope that some of the younger generation will appreciate this music, that we're desperately trying to keep alive in our collective memories.

Just received my set today too and right now I'm listening to Disc 2, the Lee Morgan session. The number is 2032.

Essential? That's hard to define. A lot of those 10" Blue Notes from the 50s are essential and very overlooked, probably 'cause they're not in circulation. The George Wallington (part of the Frank Foster CD reissue) is essential as is the Maggies and Introducing Kenny Drew. For guitar enthusiasts (heck, for anybody), the Sal Salvador is damn overlooked and damn good.

Larry, interesting analysis. What do you think of Scott Hamilton? I haven't heard that much of his other than a cd I picked up recently that he did with Eddie Higgins for Venus.

Oh, I love this movie man, especially when Sigourney Weaver gets told off and when Melanie Griffith tells her friend where she's calling from at the end of the movie. Great theme.

It's true; not winning more hardware is a disappointment but an incredible season they had. They just don't seem to do well in Europe. But with two league titles and 2 FA cups in the last 3 years, it's hard to complain. Has Chelsea fired Ranieri yet. I hope not. He's a class act. Perhaps if he's fired, Real Madrid will pick him because they are staggering to the finish line. It just shows that defense needs to be paid attention to. They were stupid to sell Makelele to Chelsea and not pay him his due. They're regretting that decision dearly.

Bill, those are some serious looking pictures. I'm glad you're ok. Deer are a perennial problem in NJ. A few years ago in our town one caused a fatal accident, killing a teacher and one of her students in her car. The deer crossed the road and ran into the car and somehow the deer's head wound up going into the driver who obviously lost control and hit a tree, killing her and the student, both of whom were not wearing belts. The teacher's children were with her but they were wearing belts and both survived. It was an incredibly bad tragedy.

Well, I used to really like Bob James a while ago. George Benson too. Life is a masquerade kind of stuff. Plus, I still dig a lot of Frank Sinatra stuff (but not the person).

While I can't say I like this, I agree with Ray's post. I believe 50 years is sufficient time to exploit the monies in a recording. A patent is only about 17 years and usually a company exploting a patent has to spend a lot of funds before the product ever sees the market so it's really a lot less than 17 years.
