  1. Since these are apparently Disconforme, can I assume that they're ripoffs and skip 'em?

    Jerry Dodgion

James, I've ordered the cd so I'll let you know how it sounds when I get it.
  3. Just a reminder, but these are coming out tomorrow.
  4. Thanks for the tip. For some reason, I've had trouble doing that in the past.

Since Proper doesn't try as you say what about some of their older boxes, like Bebop Spoken Here. Where did they steal that one from. There it's not just one artist but several. I think with Classics it's easy for them, if they do that, take it from them but with a multi artist set I think it's a little more difficult for that charge to stick. There are some cuts on that box from Dodo, Sonny Berman, Leo Parker, Claude Thornhill, etc. I don't think Classics had done anything with them, at that time. If they're guilty, I'd boycott 'em. I'm not just sure that they are. We also should try get away from it's legal, but it's bad discussion. You're mixing concepts that are like apples and oranges. Let's accept it's legal and focus on the bad-good argument. The question as Clementine raises it and as Chuck has raised it is will this copying, if that's what they're doing, lead to an inhibition by remasterers to reissue material. If the remasterers know their work is going to be copied because of the copyright laws, yeah we're probably not going to see as much as we should or could. One solution would be for the US to crack down on imports of these sets; that would probably remove the incentive to make them. Better still would be to have a universal copyright law followed by all or at least Europe and the US.
  6. Well, it looks like Farmer Brown arrived in the first picture

    proper reissues

Having been a Proper advocate for a long time and having read some recent threads is giving me pause. I think it will have to depend on the box in question and what I can find about it before I decide to take the plunge. However, I'm not sure I'd buy this blindly (not that I have that many of these). Of the ones I do, Bebop Spoken Here, Hawkins, Dex and Fats Navarro, I can't see that these were stolen from elsewhere. Also, the Sonny Stitt one seems to fall in that vein. It's a little disconcerting to say the least. The least I can say is that I studiously avoid Definitive since Chuck pointed out what they were doing a while back.
  8. I'm signed on to couple but not as many as you, just mosaic and jazzmatazz. We're all nerds.
  9. Sacrilege to sell Endgame Brilliance. A must for every collection
  10. This may be slightly off topic but have you noticed that on the older sets, the boxes now come with a lift off top. Much better to avoid any chance of the binders separating.
  11. When I first started listening to jazz and first heard of Tina Brooks, I thought it was a female singer . I quickly found out to the contrary. This probably goes down not as a stupid question but a stupid confession :rsmile:
  12. Huh? For the record, I didn't post here. However, reading this thread has given me a taste to look for those albums.
  13. Has anybody picked this up? Heard a cut on the radio and had a great sound. The cd features Frank Wess, Brad Leali, Dan Block, Jay Brandford and Jerry Dodgion on saxes with Mike Ledonne piano, Dennis Irwin bass and Joe Farnsworth drums. It's available through cd baby although it's not cheap ($20). Anyway I ordered a copy. Jerry's web site is www.jerrydodgion.com
  14. The more I listen to this set, it just keeps getting better and better. The book is also quite incredible. It's a little above me musically but a fine piece of analysis.
  15. Well, she was definitely unaware and he must have really been drunk.
  16. Happy Birthday Claude (belated)
  17. I have to admit I paid a lot of money for Trane's Blue Trane on JRVG
  18. I'd rather have it from Mosaic because if there's a problem they'll replace it. However, I've had very good experiences with this seller. Plus, you gotta love anybody whose address is the People's Republic of Cambridge.

    Peter Bernstein

I had never heard anything he'd done before until I heard a cut from one of the Jimmy Cobb Mob cds on the radio. He really stood and grabbed my attention. I see that AMG likens him to Wes Montgomery. I couldn't say but that one song I heard made me think of Grant. Any other thoughts?
  20. Another big for this set and Bobby Jaspar. It's incredible that this set is still around. If you like Bobby Jaspar, don't miss his cd on the Jazz in Paris series.
  21. I've started listening to this set and I realize what a huge mistake I almost made by not getting it. If you don't have it, and are on the fence, jump off right now. The session by Lennie and Lee at the Sing Song Room that's on disc one is pure, pure gold. Beautiful music. A must have in my view.
  22. Slightly off topic but Dick Schaap is related to Walter and Phil Schaap. I believe Walter Schaap was his uncle.
  23. I don't want to be argumentative about this but a "rumor" is not strong evidence on which to convict a label. On the bebop set, I don't think they could have borrowed from remasterings since a lot of what was on there was not available previously. I would say the same for the Hawkins set, especially the Keynote material although it's conceivable they could have copied the cd versions of the Hawkins material. However, I would need a little more than a rumor to avoid them altogether in the future.
  24. Maybe some of us older posters should post pictures of what we looked like at 30 and now. I know in my case it wouldn't be that flattering (although I'm still about the same weight)
