What's the oldest 'current' Mosaic box?
Brad replied to wesbed's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I am fully with Lon on this one and thanks for posting the link because we've all weighed in on this before. Although it's not a limited set, any idea why Mosaic stopped selling the lp version. Did they just not want to make any more lp sets? -
I can't believe there's more buzz about these releases. Anyway, the Zoot release (I'm no Zoot expert) is unusual apparently because he apparently didn't play on alto too much. In response to Alexander's comment, the liner notes supply explanation why it doesn't sound live. Falcon's Lair was the name of Doris Duke's home to whom Joe Castro was married and he invited musicians over there to jam and he recorded the sessions. There sounds like there are other sessions and I'd love to hear them. The sound is very good and there is some really great music here.

Jazz collectors,rare Miles Davis ephemera
Brad replied to Dmitry's topic in Offering and Looking For...
His reserve is probably his buy it now. In any event, he's asking you to take his word for it and in this day and age we would need a little more proof than that. There's no way to test his statement so forget about it. -
That's just incredible. I'm sure the seller must be flabbergasted.

Ditto on the Zoot Sims cd. Regarding the Bud Powell cd, if you're a bop fan, this is a must. The first 8 tracks are from a Royal Roost jam session and features Cecil Payne, J.J. and Buddy DeFranco. On two of the numbers, Buddy takes some beautiful solos (Garth, take note ). The sound, as you might expect, isn't the best but it's typical sound from the Roost. The latter part of the record is made up of Bud when he was vacationing with Francis Paudras and family at Edenville after he was recovering from TB. Some related material has come out on Black Lion, including Salt Peanuts (although I don't know if the versions of the song on both cds are the same). This material on the Pablo cd is good late Bud and I Remember Clifford is very moving. Hot House with Johnny Griffin is spectacular, over 18 minutes. The liner notes by Ted Panken look to be good although I only glossed over them so far.

I'll echo Mike's comment. It's a little -- I don't want to say nasty or mean -- too much to compare her to Norah. She's a jazz singer and that's what she wants to be, unlike Norah.

Man, this has got to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen on Ebay. 50,000 hits? That's amazing.

Yeah, I know what you mean by feeling like the woman in the first photo

Since these are apparently Disconforme, can I assume that they're ripoffs and skip 'em?
-
James, I've ordered the cd so I'll let you know how it sounds when I get it.

Just a reminder, but these are coming out tomorrow.

Thanks for the tip. For some reason, I've had trouble doing that in the past.

Since Proper doesn't try as you say what about some of their older boxes, like Bebop Spoken Here. Where did they steal that one from. There it's not just one artist but several. I think with Classics it's easy for them, if they do that, take it from them but with a multi artist set I think it's a little more difficult for that charge to stick. There are some cuts on that box from Dodo, Sonny Berman, Leo Parker, Claude Thornhill, etc. I don't think Classics had done anything with them, at that time. If they're guilty, I'd boycott 'em. I'm not just sure that they are. We also should try get away from it's legal, but it's bad discussion. You're mixing concepts that are like apples and oranges. Let's accept it's legal and focus on the bad-good argument. The question as Clementine raises it and as Chuck has raised it is will this copying, if that's what they're doing, lead to an inhibition by remasterers to reissue material. If the remasterers know their work is going to be copied because of the copyright laws, yeah we're probably not going to see as much as we should or could. One solution would be for the US to crack down on imports of these sets; that would probably remove the incentive to make them. Better still would be to have a universal copyright law followed by all or at least Europe and the US.

Well, it looks like Farmer Brown arrived in the first picture

Having been a Proper advocate for a long time and having read some recent threads is giving me pause. I think it will have to depend on the box in question and what I can find about it before I decide to take the plunge. However, I'm not sure I'd buy this blindly (not that I have that many of these). Of the ones I do, Bebop Spoken Here, Hawkins, Dex and Fats Navarro, I can't see that these were stolen from elsewhere. Also, the Sonny Stitt one seems to fall in that vein. It's a little disconcerting to say the least. The least I can say is that I studiously avoid Definitive since Chuck pointed out what they were doing a while back.

Sacrilege to sell Endgame Brilliance. A must for every collection -
This may be slightly off topic but have you noticed that on the older sets, the boxes now come with a lift off top. Much better to avoid any chance of the binders separating.

When I first started listening to jazz and first heard of Tina Brooks, I thought it was a female singer . I quickly found out to the contrary. This probably goes down not as a stupid question but a stupid confession :rsmile:

Huh? For the record, I didn't post here. However, reading this thread has given me a taste to look for those albums.

Has anybody picked this up? Heard a cut on the radio and had a great sound. The cd features Frank Wess, Brad Leali, Dan Block, Jay Brandford and Jerry Dodgion on saxes with Mike Ledonne piano, Dennis Irwin bass and Joe Farnsworth drums. It's available through cd baby although it's not cheap ($20). Anyway I ordered a copy. Jerry's web site is www.jerrydodgion.com

The more I listen to this set, it just keeps getting better and better. The book is also quite incredible. It's a little above me musically but a fine piece of analysis.

Well, she was definitely unaware and he must have really been drunk.
