Well, I've seen Charlap a bunch of times here in New Jersey and so I like him. The last time I saw him he explained to the people in the club what he was doing and why he was doing. It was fascinating to hear his explanations.

I like to listen any time of the day but usually I need to be myself for good listening. I may have it on the car when I'm travelling with my family but unless I've listened to that particular cd before I'll play it again when I'm alone.

Not only is this one of the best sets I own but the book is chockful of information. It's a great book, especially with the glossary in the back. PD, what did you meant by Tommy Turk being the low point. Surely, you jest. I love his stuff. Unfortunately, he didn't too much. I think the book gives a short bio. A while ago a Japanese cd of his was on ebay. Went for $40 or so. Highlights: Roy Eldridge, Bird and Pres. Lowlights: Could do without some of the Slim Gaillard stuff. Better to have it to choose than not however. Perdido is synonomous with JATP. We could use a JATP for the 21st century.

It was surprising to say the least.

We always talk about Rudy (justifiably so) and Ron McMasters and other Blue Note gurus. But I never see Kirk Felton over at Fantasy get any mention. I just picked up the new Sonny Stitt release from Fantasy, the Prestige two-fer and it sounds darn good to me. I'll be the first to admit I'm no audiophile like some others here. But this guy never gets any mention and I like his work

I think Bob should have the honor of starting an "ebay craziness" thread. And, btw, I'd like to sign Bertrand's letter with him. It's an excellent suggestion. A letter from many buyers of their cds should mean something.

This is a set that never gets as far as I can tell any attention. I can't recall ever seeing it mentioned. This was the first Mosaic I ever bought at auction and it costs me a pretty penny. It languished for a long time in my shelves and I recently started listening to it again. This is incredible music. Paul Desmond's tone is just incredible and he and Jim Hall work so well together. To play sax like that gives me chills. I've listened to the first 2 cds and one particular song that stands out for me is The Night Has a Thousand Eyes from Take Ten. Five lps made up this set, 4 of which were on RCA. This set has really grabbed my attention. It doesn't seem that Paul Desmond gets much attention. Another beautiful record that he did was Two of A Mind with Gerry Mulligan. The tapestry they weave is likewise incredible. I believe this one is still available although the Mosaic set is unfortunately unavailable.

As far as I can tell, this is his only date for Savoy as a leader.

I've got that cd but it's at home and I'll try to post back later unless somebody posts sooner.

The two Lps on Red, Blue and Green are The Mode (Jazzland 959) and Images (Jazzland 974). I'd also recommend, if you can find it, Jazz It's Magic on Savoy. It's a Curtis Fuller date but Sonny is wonderful on it.

Someone, not me, is selling over on Ebay a bunch of volumes from Bird's Eyes, the 25 or so cd series from Philology that is pretty are. The seller's name bachstmatthew. However, he's got no rating.

I've kind of shied away from that box because from what I've heard and read, a lot of it is like R&B or jump blues or something like dance music. It developed to replace the swing music that people could dance to whereas isn't the sort of music you could. I'm not sure how to define it, but maybe it's closer to pre-rock, with a lot of honking. This is probably not too helpful but it's the kind of thing that you know when you see it or hear it. I recently listened to one of those Prestige First Sessions, the one with Lockjaw and Bennie Green and it was way disappointing for the most part because it was R&B, with a lot of vocals. I just looked at AMG and they define it sort of as I described it, as dance music, where the musicians played louder, with more electric instruments and accentuating riffs, boogies and vocals. Pianos pounded harder and louder and ditto for the saxes. That said, R&B did play an important part in jazz. For example, Sonny Stitt played with Tiny Bradshaw and Coltrane played in a R&B band and this proved an important training ground for jazz musicians.

That guy's a jerk. I'm almost twice his age and I realize I still don't know jack you-know-what. But I won't anybody run me off from anywhere. The only guy I don't care to tangle with was Chris A. but I'll miss his posts and his clashes with Heaney. The post a while ago of what Chris would say to hardbop if they ever met, "Luke I am your father!" was one of the funniest things I saw on the old board. Another classic was hardbop's reaction to some new reissues: "Tom, once again, you've managed to disappoint me."

I agree with JS. Sure, it's sad but it's time to move on. If we're looking for people to blame, let's look at ourselves and the administrators. The Misc. Non-Music Forum was out of control and BN didn't pay much attention for a long time and then they took a sledgehammer when some careful chiseling was needed. Sometimes change is good and we can thank B3er for this site. Hopefully, we'll resurrect what was good and learn. The BNBB was special and hopefully this place can become a special site for us too.

I'm here also. I like the feel of this board, especially the look and it's the closest thing to the old BNBB. I'm also at AAJ but I think I like it here better. I hope others from the old board will be checking this out. Also the software is a big improvement over the old board.

Wesbed, The one on PJ is Jazz Immortal and the other one, which is actually on Blue Note, is Memorial Album, remastered back in 2001.

Have you thought about the Pacific Jazz remasterings done by Rudy last year or 2001. They're essential. There is also the complete Brownie on EmArcy. However, that dates from 1989 and I know some of those dates from that box have been reissued in Japan such as the All Star Live Jam Session with Dinah Washington. There's also some cds from Fantasy that he made when in France under the titles "Clifford Brown Sextet in Paris" and "Clifford Brown Quartet in Paris". There's also Vogue releases, the Complete Paris Sessions (3 volumes) which are good and I think recorded around the same time. I believe he was with Hamp in Paris at the time.

Second the thought about the Verve release. There was also a release on Pablo (I believe) about a year or so ago, with Brookmeyer that was pretty nice.

I thought Ed's post were right on. It's really a ghost town and it's very saddening to think that only one week ago it was a thriving place. However, I think that is what management wanted. They didn't want the hardcore fans like us dissecting everything or analyzing this or that. They want people who will come there because of Norah and buy their new stable of artists and some of the new RVGs, etc. they put out. It wouldn't surprise me if the RVGs and traditional pre-70 jazz doesn't get issued as much as it did in the last few years. The one thing is that the hardcore of us that came to be BNBB have found this new home and AAJ to go to continue.

Mr. Son-of-a-gun, you hit the nail right on the proverbial head. There's not enough material there for a Mosaic Select, unless the Red Menace can find unissued material in the NKVD archives

I had heard only one Jones disc before, Jayhawk, and what impressed me from this set was Strazzeri. I had not heard him before and he was revelation. Carmell to me is definitely more in the Brownie sphere as opposed to say the BN Lee Morgan/Byrd style.

Is offering for sale ok as opposed to trade. What about providing a link to your own ebay auctions. I assume that if you saw an ebay auction that would be of interest to all of us, that would be ok. Are you keeping it greazy
